The Short Answer

The Harbor at 2059 Summer Lee Drive is the best thing to do in Rockwall, a lakefront district of restaurants, shops and an amphitheater on the edge of Lake Ray Hubbard. The historic downtown square three minutes inland is the better walk, and the county museum is where you actually get to see the rock wall the town is named for.

The Harbor Rockwall

Lakefront, off I-30 at Horizon Road · Free to enter

Known for A lakefront district of restaurants and shops, with the lighthouse that shows up in every photo of Rockwall

This is the thing people mean when they say they are going to Rockwall. It is a mixed use development on the shore of Lake Ray Hubbard holding dining, retail, entertainment, a spa, offices and apartments, and the water is close enough to the tables that the lake is the point rather than the view. The small lighthouse at the water's edge is the single most photographed object in Rockwall County.

It is first because it is the only attraction here that works for a whole evening without a plan. You park once, walk, eat, and watch the light go down over 21,000 acres of water. The amphitheater runs a free summer concert series, so a November visit gets you the restaurants and the waterfront without the music.

Go-to order or tip: Come for sunset rather than midday. The district faces west across the lake, which is the entire reason to be there, and the restaurant patios fill in the hour before dark.

Hours
The district is open daily. Individual restaurants, shops and the theater keep their own hours

Historic Downtown Rockwall and the courthouse square

The square, 100 block of East Rusk Street · Free

Known for The Old Rockwall County Courthouse ringed by shops and restaurants in historic buildings

The Old Rockwall County Courthouse sits at the center of the square, surrounded by historic buildings holding shops, restaurants and offices. Rockwall is a designated Texas Main Street City, a Texas Historical Commission program, with sources giving the designation year as either 2008 or 2009. The Main Street office is on the square itself at 101 East Rusk Street.

It ranks second because it is the better walk and the more specific place. The Harbor could be in any lakefront suburb in Texas. A 19th century county square with a working courthouse at the middle of it could not. Note that the current county courthouse is a separate modern building at 1101 Ridge Road, so do not navigate to that one.

Go-to order or tip: Saturday morning from early May through the end of September, the Rockwall Farmers Market runs on the square from 8am to noon with more than 45 vendors and live music. Outside that window, Saturday is still the best day for the shops.

Hours
Open all the time as a district. Individual shops keep short hours and many close Sunday and Monday

Lake Ray Hubbard

The whole western edge of Rockwall County · Free from shore, varies by marina or guide

Known for 21,671 acres of open water for bass, catfish and crappie, 20 minutes from Dallas

Texas Parks and Wildlife puts the surface area at 21,671 acres. The City of Dallas owns it and Dallas Water Utilities runs it, which is why a Rockwall landmark has a Dallas phone number. Other sources quote 22,745 acres, so treat the figure as roughly 22,000 either way. The fish are white and hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, channel and blue catfish, and white crappie.

Parks and Wildlife is specific about where to go. The heated discharge area on the west side south of I-30 holds many sportfish, humps and points are the best bets for hybrid and white bass, largemouth sit near vegetation or rock riprap, and in summer crappie and white bass school over submerged brush piles in the lower lake. Sources disagree on how many public boat ramps there are, with counts from three to more than ten, so check the Parks and Wildlife public access list before you tow a boat.

Go-to order or tip: If you do not have a boat, the shoreline at The Harbor and the marinas at Chandler's Landing and Harbor Bay are the practical access points. Charter and sailing operators run out of both.

Hours
Open daily. Statewide Texas fishing regulations apply to every species

Rockwall County Historical Foundation Museum

Inside Harry Myers Park, on East Washington Street · Free

Known for The only place you can actually see the rock wall Rockwall is named for

Here is the thing nobody tells you about Rockwall. The rock wall is real, it is a natural geological formation rather than anything built, and you cannot go and look at it. Every known stretch of it lies under private land. Well diggers hit it in the early 1850s, the town took its name from it, and it has been effectively off limits ever since. In 2025 the city said it had acquired the land where the formation was discovered, and reporting at the time raised the possibility of public access, but we found no confirmation that a public viewing site has opened.

So this museum is the answer. It holds rocks taken from the Stodghill farm and set out in the arrangement they were originally found in, which is as close as a visitor gets. The museum occupies the restored Manson-LaMoreaux-Hartman House and is recorded in the Texas Historical Commission Atlas. Do not go hunting the wall on a map that labels somebody's pasture.

Go-to order or tip: Call (972) 722-1504 before you drive over. We found four different published schedules for this museum and no two agreed, which usually means a small volunteer operation.

Hours
A short midweek and Saturday schedule, with other times by appointment. Published hours conflict badly between sources, so phone first

Harry Myers Park

East Washington Street, east of downtown · Free

Known for The city's main park, with trails, a disc golf course and a dog park

The city park that holds everything a park is supposed to hold. Picnic areas, walking trails, sports courts, a disc golf course and a dog park, plus the county historical museum sitting inside the grounds at 901 East Washington. Two of the eight things on this list are in the same place, which makes this the most efficient stop in Rockwall.

It is the right first stop with children or a dog, and the right stop on any day when the museum's hours are the question mark. The park is open whether the museum is or not. One city scheduling page lists 845 East Washington for the sports fields, which is either a second entrance or a typo, so navigate to 815.

Go-to order or tip: Pair it with the museum. Park once on East Washington, walk the trails, and try the museum door while you are there, which is the cheapest way to handle its unpredictable hours.

Rockwall Community Playhouse

East Rusk Street, just east of downtown · $$

Known for Seven shows a season in an 84 seat room

Eighty four seats, seven productions a year, run as a community theatre a few blocks east of the square. At that size there is no bad seat and no distance between the stage and the room, which is a different thing from a touring production in a 2,000 seat hall and worth doing on its own terms.

The 2026 season has included 1776 in the spring, and White Christmas is scheduled from November 20 to December 6, 2026, which makes this the timely pick for a trip in the next month. Eighty four seats sell out, so book rather than turning up.

Go-to order or tip: Buy ahead for anything in December. An 84 seat house running a Christmas title in a town of 50,000 is the definition of a show that sells out.

Hours
Performance evenings and weekend matinees through the season. Check the current season page for dates

Buffalo Creek Golf Club

Country Club Drive, 1.6 miles off the Ridge Road exit · $$$

Known for A public par 71 laid out by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish

A genuinely good public course, which is rarer in the Dallas suburbs than the number of courses suggests. The club's own site gives the par as 71 and sells public tee times alongside member ones. Third party listings credit the design to Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and put it at about 7,078 yards, though some of those listings say par 72, so we are going with the club's own number.

Rates are not published on the home page. The club has a rates page and takes bookings through an online tee sheet, so get the number for your day and group before you drive out. From Dallas, take I-30 east to Ridge Road, turn right, and the course is 1.6 miles down on the left.

Go-to order or tip: Book the tee time online rather than calling. The public and member booking links go to the same sheet, so you see the real availability.

Hours
Early morning to evening tee times daily. Book online or call

San Martino Winery and Vineyards

Highway 205 north, just outside the city limits · $$

Known for The only winery in the Rockwall area, open three days a week

A small winery on Highway 205 north of town, and we are being straight with you that it is just outside Rockwall rather than in it. It is the only one in the area, it is listed in the Texas Wine Lover guide and the Uncork Texas Wines directory, and the three day schedule on its own site is the one to plan around. Other directories publish different hours, including a Thursday opening, and we would not rely on those.

It is last on this list because of that schedule, not the wine. Three afternoons a week means it fits a weekend trip and nothing else. Phone numbers also differ between listings, so we are using the one on the winery's own visiting hours page.

Go-to order or tip: The winery warns that some GPS systems route people south of I-30, which is wrong. Go north on TX-205 from I-30 and do not take TX-205 south.

Hours
Friday 3pm to 7pm, Saturday 1pm to 7pm, Sunday 1pm to 6pm, closed Monday through Thursday

How did we pick these?

We started with the two things every Rockwall list opens with, The Harbor and the lake, and then went looking for what a visitor can actually verify. Addresses, hours and phone numbers came off each venue's own site where one exists, from Texas Parks and Wildlife for the lake, and from the Texas Historical Commission Atlas for the museum.

One entry got cut outright. Siren Rock Brewing at 310 South Goliad Street shows up on most Rockwall roundups, and its own site still publishes daily taproom hours, but its Yelp listing was updated in August 2026 marked closed, Tripadvisor reports it permanently closed, Untappd lists it as no longer in business, and its online ordering page shows every day closed. When the only source saying a business is open is the business's own unattended website, we leave it off.

We also fixed a mistake that gets repeated everywhere. Most guides tell you to go see the rock wall. You cannot. It is on private land, and at least one travel guide warns that online maps label a private property as the wall. The museum is the answer, and it is the entry we spent the most time on because its hours are published four different ways.

Nothing here is a client of ours and no partner or sponsored listing appears on this list.

What should you know before you go?

Rockwall is compact. Everything on this list except the winery and the golf course sits inside about four miles, and the square to The Harbor is a five minute drive.

Stop Cost Best day Catch
The Harbor Free to walk Any evening Concerts are summer only
Downtown square Free Saturday Many shops shut Sunday and Monday
Lake Ray Hubbard Free from shore Any You need a boat or a charter to do it properly
County museum Free Midweek or Saturday Phone first, hours are unreliable
Harry Myers Park Free Any daylight Nothing, it is just open
Community Playhouse Ticketed Performance nights 84 seats, book ahead
Buffalo Creek Golf $$$ Weekday mornings Rates are not published online
San Martino Winery $$ Friday to Sunday Closed Monday through Thursday

Seasonality matters more here than in most towns. The free Concert by the Lake series at the Harbor's amphitheater runs in summer. The farmers market runs early May through the end of September. If you are visiting between October and April, you get the restaurants, the square, the park, the museum and a show, and you miss both of those.

Parking is free at The Harbor and on the square, which is worth saying because it is not true of the equivalent districts closer to Dallas.

Where should you eat while you are there?

The Harbor carries most of the waterfront dining and the square carries most of the independents. We have written the whole list up separately in the best restaurants in Rockwall, Texas, which is the companion piece to this one. If you are making a wider loop out of it, the best day trips from Dallas puts Rockwall alongside the other towns inside an hour, and the best restaurants in Royse City, Texas covers the next town east on I-30.

Everything else we have published on the town is on the Rockwall city guide, and the things to do category has the rest of Texas.

What should you do next?

Park on the square late on a Saturday morning, walk the shops and the courthouse, then drive five minutes to Harry Myers Park and try the museum door. Finish at The Harbor for sunset over the lake. That is a full day for the price of lunch and dinner, and it is the version of Rockwall that is actually about Rockwall rather than about being near Dallas.

If you only have an evening, skip everything else and go to The Harbor at golden hour. If you have a boat, you already know what to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not in place. Every known section of the formation lies under privately owned land and is closed to the public. The Rockwall County Historical Foundation Museum displays rocks taken from the Stodghill farm and arranged as they were found, which is the closest public look. The city said in 2025 it had acquired the discovery site, but we found no confirmation that a public viewing area has opened.

Scientists have determined it is a natural geological formation. Folk stories about prehistoric builders persist, and they are stories. Well diggers struck it in the early 1850s, it runs across the county, and in places it broke the surface, which is how it got noticed and how the town got its name.

Yes. It is about 20 to 25 miles east of downtown Dallas on I-30, which puts The Harbor inside half an hour outside rush hour. The lake, the square and the park are all within a few minutes of each other once you are there, so a day trip does not mean a day of driving.

The county historical museum, the shops around the courthouse square and a show at the Rockwall Community Playhouse all work indoors, and The Harbor has restaurants and a movie theater under cover. Phone the museum first, because its hours are the least predictable thing on this list.

Saturdays from early May through the end of September, 8am to noon, on the historic downtown square at 101 Rusk Street. It lists more than 45 vendors across a season, with live music at each market, and well behaved pets on a lead are welcome. It does not run in the winter.

Texas Parks and Wildlife gives 21,671 surface acres. Several regional guides say 22,745 acres instead, so roughly 22,000 acres is the safe figure. The City of Dallas owns the reservoir and Dallas Water Utilities manages it, even though most of the recreational shoreline is in Rockwall, Rowlett, Garland and Heath.
