The Best Plumbers in Austin

Six Austin plumbing companies checked against the state board's own licence file, because in Austin a plumber needs a city registration as well as a licence.

The Short Answer

Stan's Heating, Air and Plumbing is the first call for most Austin houses. It has worked the city since 1954, it publishes its master plumbing licence, M-38233, and that licence carries the state's water supply protection endorsement. ABC Home and Commercial Services, trading here since 1949, is the other safe answer.

Stan's Heating, Air & Plumbing

Dillard Circle, north central Austin · Quote based, maintenance plans offered

Known for Seventy years in Austin and a labelled licence for each of three trades

Stan's has served Austin since 1954 and it is the rare company that tells you which licence covers which trade rather than printing a row of numbers and leaving you to guess. Its site labels the plumbing licence M-38233, the electrical licence 41374 and the state registration TACLB38119E. We checked the plumbing number in the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners' own licensee file, where it comes back current for Stan's Heating Air and Plumbing in Travis County under the responsible master plumber Brandon Cardwell.

The file adds something the website does not. That licence carries the water supply protection specialist endorsement, which is the cross-connection and backflow qualification, and it lines up with the water softener and water testing work Stan's advertises. Of the six companies here, it is the only one holding that endorsement, which makes it the sensible call if your problem involves an irrigation system, a softener or anything tied into the city supply.

Go-to order or tip: If you are putting in or re-plumbing an irrigation system, say so when you book. Austin requires a plumbing permit for a yard sprinkler system before installation, and the backflow side of that job is exactly what this licence endorsement covers.

ABC Home & Commercial Services

US 290 East, east Austin · Quote based

Known for An Austin family business since 1949 that can send a licensed plumber or four other trades

The oldest name on this page, operating in Austin since 1949, family owned and led by Bobby Jenkins. Plumbing sits alongside pest control, heating and air, electrical and pool services, which is why this is the company people keep on file rather than look up in a panic. Its plumbing work covers water heaters, leak detection, drain cleaning, disposals and water and gas line repair, and it advertises 24 hour plumbing response.

One criticism, applied evenly. The footer runs six licence numbers in a row, TPCL2170, TECL 23492, TACLA86888E, LI2669, M-32147 and TICL587, without saying which belongs to which trade. We matched M-32147 in the state file to ABC Home and Commercial Services in Travis County, held by the responsible master plumber Michael Yazolino, and it is current. Worth knowing that the counter hours are weekday and Saturday morning, which is unusual honesty in a trade where everybody claims to be open always.

Go-to order or tip: If you already use ABC for pest control or lawn work, ask whether your existing account gets you into the plumbing schedule faster. On a company running five trades off one dispatch system, it often does.

Moore & More Plumbing

Bissel Lane, south Austin · Quote based

Known for Plumbing only, family owned since 1986, and one of the oldest licence numbers still working

A family company doing plumbing and nothing else since 1986, out of a yard on Bissel Lane in south Austin. It publishes licence M-13180, and that number is the quiet headline here: the state file confirms it is current, held by David Moore for Moore and More Plumbing Inc, and a five-digit number beginning with 13 is among the longest-held master plumbing licences still in active use around Austin.

Scope is the ordinary house list done properly: water heaters, drain cleaning, leak detection, sewer repair and replacement, water softeners and whole-house repiping, for residential and commercial customers. Two notes. The state record lists the licence holder's county as Hays rather than Travis, which is common for an owner living out toward Dripping Springs and does not affect the Austin address or the work. And the site publishes no hours, so this is a company to call rather than count on at midnight.

Go-to order or tip: Ask for a whole-house pressure reading while a plumber is already there. South Austin pressure varies a lot by elevation, and a regulator problem shows up later as pinhole leaks and short water heater life, which is a cheap fix caught early.

Radiant Plumbing and Air Conditioning

Reinli Street, east of Highland · Quote based, membership plan offered

Known for The broadest round-the-clock coverage in Austin, across three trades

Trading since 1999 and now the most visible plumbing brand in the city, running plumbing, heating and air, and electrical out of Reinli Street with a second base in San Antonio. It publishes a full licence block for both cities, master plumbing licences M-42438 and M-45619 plus mechanical and electrical numbers, which is more disclosure than most of its competitors manage. The genuine 24 hour, seven day operation is the reason to call it, and its awards wall is the longest here, including a Best of Austin listing for 2025 that we could not confirm from the Austin Chronicle's own pages.

The reason it sits fourth rather than first. Both of those plumbing numbers are current in the state file, but the counties do not line up the way the website implies: M-42438 is recorded with a Hays County address under Radiant Plumbing and Air Conditioning, while M-45619, which the site labels as the San Antonio licence, is the one recorded in Travis County, under Schmidt Mechanical Group LLC doing business as Radiant. Nothing about that is improper, and the company is plainly licensed. It just means the labels on the site are not the full picture, and on a page built around licence checking we are going to say so.

Go-to order or tip: Ask what the trip or diagnostic fee is before the van leaves, and whether it is credited against the repair. On a 24 hour operation that is the number that varies most between a Tuesday morning and a Sunday night.

Pecan Street Plumbing

East Second Street, downtown · Quote based

Known for A two-mile downtown service radius and a medical gas endorsement

The most unusual entry here, and a useful one if you live or work downtown. Pecan Street was founded by the master plumber Curtis Novinger and publishes its licence the right way round, naming the person: licence M-18971, Curtis Novinger, RMP. The state file confirms it as current in Travis County. The company deliberately restricts itself to roughly a two-mile radius from the corner of Old Pecan Street and Congress, which is a small enough patch that a downtown condo or an older central house gets a plumber who knows the building stock.

The state file also shows the medical gas endorsement on that licence, which puts Pecan Street in the small group of Austin RMPs who may pipe oxygen and vacuum lines for a clinic or a dental practice, relevant downtown where those tenancies are common. The limitation is deliberate and worth repeating: outside that radius it is not your company, and its site gives a street name without a number.

Go-to order or tip: For a downtown condo repair, check who owns the pipe before you book anybody. Inside the unit is yours, the riser is usually the association's, and a plumber who works this patch daily will often tell you which on the phone.

Beyond Wow Plumbing

Greystone Drive in northwest Austin, plus Taylor, Buda and Round Rock · Quote based

Known for Sewer and trenchless work across the whole metro since 1980

This is the company Austin knew as S&D Plumbing, trading since 1980 and renamed Beyond Wow under the same ownership. It publishes licence M-11671, which the state file returns as current for S&D Plumbing LLC doing business as Beyond Wow, held by Samuel Dowdy out of Taylor in Williamson County. The depth is on the drain and sewer side: hydro jetting, sewer camera inspection, tree root intrusion, grinder and ejector pumps, tunnel drain replacement and trenchless sewer and water line replacement, which is the work that decides whether your driveway survives a main line repair.

Four locations cover Austin, Taylor, Buda and Round Rock, so coverage is the best here outside Radiant. It is last because the site's own details do not hold still. The contact block gives 342 Greystone Drive and the locations page gives 3432 Greystone Drive, and one contact form still shows a placeholder telephone number. The main line and the licence both check out, but confirm the address before you drive to it.

Go-to order or tip: If a company proposes trenchless pipe bursting or lining, ask to see the camera footage of the existing line first and get the depth in writing. Trenchless is cheaper than digging only when the old line is in a condition that suits it.

How did we pick these?

Plumbing is licensed to people in Texas, not to companies. A plumbing business works under the licence of one designated responsible master plumber, and the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners publishes its entire licensee list as a free download. That makes this the one home trade where a list like this can be checked rather than asserted.

So we took the licence number off each company's own site and looked it up in the board's file, confirming that the number is current, that it belongs to the company trading under it, and which named person holds it. Then we read the endorsements, which are recorded against the individual and decide what the plumber may legally touch. Two results came out of the data rather than the marketing: Stan's licence carries the water supply protection endorsement, the backflow and cross-connection qualification, and Pecan Street's carries medical gas. Neither company leads with it.

Austin then adds a second hurdle that Houston phrases differently and most lists ignore entirely. Under the city's own plumbing code amendments, a permit goes to a responsible master plumber who is licensed by the state and registered with the City of Austin. A plumber can be perfectly legal statewide and still unable to permit your water heater here. We asked about both.

After that, ordinary judgement: how long the company has worked Austin, whether the trade scope matches the licence, whether the published address is a real yard, and whether a company's own website agrees with itself. That last test moved two companies down this page.

What we cut. Butler Plumbing and Reliant Plumbing both sit behind bot checks that refused every request we made, so we could not read their own addresses or licence numbers first hand, and we will not publish details we have not seen. Capital City Plumbing & Drain is in Leander and S&D's own Taylor base is in Williamson County, so neither is an Austin address even though both serve the metro. A search for Austin plumbers also turned up daniels-plumbing.com ranking locally, which on inspection is a Philadelphia company on Torresdale Avenue with a city of Philadelphia master plumber. That is the single most common trap in this category.

No business on this page is a client of ours and none paid for its place.

Which Austin plumber fits which job?

Company Trading since Licence published Endorsement in state file Best for
Stan's 1954 M-38233, labelled Water supply protection Most houses, softeners, irrigation
ABC 1949 M-32147, unlabelled None recorded Households that want one supplier
Moore & More 1986 M-13180 None recorded South Austin, plumbing only
Radiant 1999 M-42438 and M-45619 None recorded Nights, weekends, three trades
Pecan Street Not stated M-18971, with the RMP named Medical gas Downtown, condos, clinics
Beyond Wow 1980 M-11671 None recorded Sewer, trenchless, whole metro

What should you ask before anyone starts?

Three questions, in this order.

Who is your responsible master plumber, and what is the number? Then look it up. Every company above passed, including the ones whose sites publish nothing, so there is no excuse for a company that will not tell you.

Are you registered with the City of Austin? This is the Austin-specific one. The state licence makes somebody a plumber; the city registration is what lets them pull your permit. If you are doing the work yourself in a house you own and live in, the homestead permit route puts you in the role of trade contractor, inspections included.

Is this job permitted, and who files it? Irrigation systems need a permit before installation and no gas work is exempt. A water heater change-out gets permitted as a matter of routine. A contractor who offers to skip it is saving you a fee and handing you a problem at resale.

What should you do next?

For an ordinary Austin house, call Stan's first. If you want one company for the plumbing, the pest control and the air conditioning, ABC. In south Austin, Moore & More. At 2 a.m., Radiant. Downtown or in a condo, Pecan Street. For a sewer line under a driveway, Beyond Wow.

Then have a look at the rest of our Austin coverage, the other cities on the plumbing hub, the same licence test applied in Houston, and our Austin roofing rankings, where no state licence exists at all and the whole exercise has to be done differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners runs a public licence search linked from tsbpe.texas.gov, and it also publishes its complete licensee lists as free downloads, which is what we used for every company above. You want three things, namely that the number is current, it belongs to the company trading under it, and you know the name of the responsible master plumber who holds it. The board is reachable on (512) 936-5200.

Yes, and this trips people up. Austin's adopted plumbing code provisions say a responsible master plumber licensed by the State of Texas and registered with the City may obtain a plumbing permit, and the city's contractor services require trade contractors to register before pulling a trade permit. So a plumber can be fully licensed by the state and still not be able to permit your job in Austin. Ask about both.

Yes, in a house you own and occupy, through the city's homestead permit route. You then act as the trade contractor yourself, which means requesting and paying for the permit, doing the work personally and scheduling the inspections. The permit cannot be transferred and cannot be used to let somebody else do the work for you. Auxiliary and alternate water systems are excluded.

More than people expect. An irrigation or yard sprinkler system needs a plumbing permit before installation, and the city's provisions state that no gas work is exempt. Minor repairs such as stopping a leak or clearing a stoppage are generally exempt from the permit, though they are not exempt from the code. Water heater change-outs are routinely permitted as plumbing change-out work, so expect your plumber to file one.

They are extra qualifications recorded against the individual's licence, not the company's. The medical gas endorsement covers oxygen, nitrous and vacuum piping in medical and dental settings. The water supply protection specialist endorsement covers cross-connection control and backflow prevention. The multipurpose residential fire sprinkler endorsement covers combined domestic water and sprinkler systems. On this page Stan's holds water supply protection and Pecan Street holds medical gas.

Because review counts are the easiest thing in this industry to accumulate and the hardest to interpret, while a licence is a matter of public record that either checks out or does not. We used the state file as the spine, then weighed how clearly each company discloses who holds its licence, what endorsements that person carries, how long it has traded in Austin, and whether its published address and hours survive contact with its own website.
