How did we pick these?
Mount Vernon has no chamber dining directory we could reach, and the city domain that looks like the obvious place to start belongs to Mount Vernon, Illinois. So this list was built from the restaurants' own material where it exists, a KETK television feature on the town, a state historical record, trade press on the travel plaza, and current public reviews for everything else.
Two restaurants publish their own information and both rank in the top half because of it. The Texas Chophouse keeps a full site with hours, menu prices and a long account of its building. Milano's takes orders through its own platform. Everything else on this page is reconstructed from directory listings and reviews, which is why you will see us name the uncertainty inside the entries rather than print a tidy opening time we cannot stand behind.
What we cut. Our Place at 104 Main Street East turns up on several best-of lists for Mount Vernon and we could find nothing on it beyond a single listing with an address and a phone, no menu, no hours, no reviews we could date, so it is out until we can confirm it is trading. Taqueria Mariscos Daysis at 209 East Main is almost certainly real and is the town's only taqueria, but it rests on one directory entry with nine reviews, one of which places the restaurant in a different town entirely, and that is not enough to rank. El Tremendo on Holbrook Street has an address and nothing else. Anita's Cafe appears on aggregated lists and we could find no Mount Vernon business by that name at all. Mt. Vernon Cafe out on Highway 37 has an unclaimed listing and no corroboration.
No restaurant here is a client of Hello Web Designs and none paid anything for its position. All seven are editorial picks. One of them is run by the sitting mayor, which we have said inside the entry because it belongs there, and it changed nothing about where the restaurant ranks.
What should you know before you go?
This town splits cleanly in two. The square has the good food and the short, uncertain hours. The interstate has the long hours and one genuinely excellent barbecue joint. Decide which problem you have before you drive in.
| Restaurant | Price | Best for | Where |
| The Texas Chophouse | $$$ | A proper steak dinner | The square |
| Texas Barbeque Corral | $ | Brisket and a loaded potato | I-30 service road |
| The Bull Pen Grill | $ | The town burger | The square |
| Tag's Hometown Bar and Grill | $$ | A drink and chicken fried steak | Off the square |
| The Spot Pizza and Pub | $ | Pizza and a beer | A block off the square |
| Milano's Pizza | $ | A pizza ordered ahead | South Kaufman |
| Cotton Belt BBQ | $ | Late, Sunday, or in a hurry | Exit 147 |
Four of the seven are inside three blocks of the Franklin County Courthouse, which makes Mount Vernon an unusually walkable stop for a town of 2,500. The Chophouse at 102 Main and The Bull Pen at 114 Main are effectively neighbours, Tag's is around the corner on North Kaufman, and The Spot is one street over on Houston.
Beer and wine sales have only been legal here since a May 2013 local option vote, which is part of why the drinking side of the dining scene is young. Both pubs on this list and the Chophouse bar postdate it.
Why does a steakhouse this good exist in a town of 2,500?
Because the people who own it live there. Brad Hyman grew up in Mount Vernon, came back in 2010, started buying buildings in the historic district with his wife Stephanie, and turned the G.P. Hill Building into a restaurant as a family project. He is also the mayor, and the town has leaned into exactly that kind of reinvestment: a restored square, a Main Street programme, two annual downtown events and a population that the city manager says is trending younger.
Geography helps too. Mount Vernon sits on Interstate 30 with Lake Cypress Springs minutes away, so a weekend dining room here draws from lake houses and from traffic between Dallas and Texarkana rather than only from 2,500 residents. The rest of what we publish on the town is on the Mount Vernon city hub.
For the same kind of list in the towns either side on I-30, see the best restaurants in Mount Pleasant 15 miles east and the best restaurants in Sulphur Springs 30 miles west, both of which have more options and neither of which has a steakhouse like this one.
What should you do next?
If you have one dinner, book The Texas Chophouse and look at the tile by the hostess stand while you wait. If you have one lunch on a weekday, go to Texas Barbeque Corral and get the loaded baked potato. If you are passing through late or on a Sunday, Cotton Belt at exit 147 is the honest answer and the only one.
Then check the day. Mount Vernon's square keeps small town hours and several of its kitchens do not publish them, so a phone call or a look at the door beats any app. More Northeast Texas guides like this one are in our restaurants category, and the best places to eat in Canton is worth a look if you are heading that way, since the travel plaza at exit 147 is a Canton company's second store.
