How did we pick these?
We started from the Brenham and Washington County Chamber CVB dining directory, which is the closest thing this town has to an official register, then checked every candidate against the bureau's own Foodies Guide and against each business's website where one exists. Addresses and phone numbers here come from the Chamber listings, and where a restaurant publishes its own hours, as Truth BBQ, 96 West and Must Be Heaven do, we used those instead.
Hours are where Brenham gets slippery. Several aggregator listings repeat the same schedule string across different restaurants, and in at least one case a directory had attached a "fresh Italian bistro" description and Brossa's hours to a completely different business. So we only state exact hours where the restaurant itself publishes them. Everywhere else we describe the pattern and tell you to call, which is the honest version.
We cut what we could not stand behind. No partner or client of ours appears on this list, because Hello Web Designs has not built a website for any restaurant in Washington County, so everything here is an ordinary editorial pick. We also excluded a handful of food trucks and a chocolate shop that the directory files under dining but that are not restaurants, and we have labelled Bevers Kitchen by its real location in Chappell Hill rather than quietly listing it as Brenham.
What should you know before you go?
Brenham is a lunch town more than a dinner town, and that catches visitors out. Must Be Heaven closes at 3pm. Truth BBQ closes when it sells out, which on a good Saturday can be early afternoon. If you arrive at six expecting a full square of open kitchens, you will find a much shorter list than you planned on.
The other thing to plan around is the Wednesday gap. Must Be Heaven closes Wednesdays, 96 West does not open until Wednesday afternoon, and Truth BBQ is shut Monday through Wednesday entirely.
| Restaurant | Best for | Price | The catch |
| Truth BBQ | Brisket, a highway stop | $$ | Thursday to Sunday, sells out |
| 96 West | A real dinner downtown | $$$ | Closed Monday and Tuesday |
| Brossa's Cibo e Vino | Fresh pasta, lunch | $$ | Sunday is lunch only |
| Volare Italian | Long-running local pasta | $$ | Hours vary by source |
| Must Be Heaven | Lunch and pie | $ | Closes 3pm, shut Wednesday |
| 30 North Gastropub | Pizza, a drink after | $$ | Least consistent published hours |
| BT Longhorn | The saloon room | $$ | Reviews split on the steaks |
| Bevers Kitchen | Southern plates, pie | $$ | 12 miles east in Chappell Hill |
Parking downtown is street parking around the courthouse square and it tightens up at midday. Walking a block is faster than circling. Truth BBQ has its own lot on the highway, which is the easier arrival if you are driving through with a car full of people.
What about the rest of Washington County?
Worth knowing that the county pulls further than the city limits. Chappell Hill, 12 miles east, is where Bevers Kitchen sits, and the bureau's patio dining list points toward Chapelton Vineyards out in the hills between Washington and Chappell Hill. If you are making a weekend of it rather than a stop, those are the two directions to look. Brenham is also a reasonable base for a wider Highway 290 run, and the best restaurants in College Station covers the next town up if you are heading toward Bryan.
What should you do next?
Drive out to Truth BBQ on a Thursday or Friday morning, eat brisket, then come back into town and walk the square. Book 96 West for dinner if you are staying the night. That is the whole plan and it works.
For everything else in town as we publish it, the Brenham city guide collects it, and the best restaurants in Texas by city is where the same research runs in the other towns we cover. If the barbecue is what brought you here, the best barbecue near Austin without the two hour line is the same argument applied an hour and a half west.
