The Short Answer

Rails, a Cafe at the Depot on East Schreiner is the best restaurant in Kerrville, Texas, set in the restored 1915 train depot and ranked first in town by Tripadvisor reviewers. Billy Gene's on Junction Highway is the best river view, Hill Country Cafe on Main is the breakfast locals actually use, and Pint and Plow is the best casual stop downtown.

Rails, a Cafe at the Depot

East Schreiner Street, by the fountain · $$

Known for Lunch and dinner in the restored 1915 Kerrville depot, with a patio by the fountain

The building is the hook and the kitchen holds it up. Rails occupies the restored 1915 Kerrville train depot, on a site that served the San Antonio and Aransas Pass passenger line from 1887, and it took the Texas Downtown Association's 2004 award for the restoration. The Kerrville Daily Times has profiled it as a lunch and dinner fixture, and the menu runs to house soups, daily specials, a grilled salmon salad, a spicy shrimp Caesar and bison burgers.

First because it is the one Kerrville restaurant that both locals and visitors put at the top, and it has held that position for years rather than a season. Tripadvisor currently ranks it number one of more than a hundred restaurants in town, with reviews still landing through 2026.

Go-to order or tip: Ask for the patio by the fountain. On weekend evenings there is classical guitar out there, which is the version of this place worth planning around.

Hours
Lunch through dinner Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday. Listings disagree on the evening close, so call for a late table

Billy Gene's Restaurant

Junction Highway, on the Guadalupe River · $$

Known for Home cooking with most tables looking straight out at the Guadalupe

Billy Gene's sits on the river at the west edge of town and most of its tables have a Guadalupe view, which is the reason it gets named first by visitors. It is also the restaurant that has repeatedly shown what it is made of. After the July 2025 flood the family fed first responders for free while debris was still piled on the back patio, coverage that reached Fox News and KSAT, and the Kerr County Lead listed it among the businesses open and doing the same thing again after the July 2026 flood.

Second because the view and the kitchen are both real and the place has proved it stays open through the worst the river can do. Expect home cooking rather than a chef's menu.

Go-to order or tip: Go for an early dinner and ask for a window or patio table. The view is the whole point and it is better before the light goes.

Hours
Daily service that listings put at roughly late morning to evening, with a later start reported on some days. Phone ahead

Francisco's

Downtown, Earl Garrett Street · $$$

Known for The downtown dinner with the serious wine list

The Kerrville Convention and Visitors Bureau singles Francisco's out as the downtown spot for dinner with a strong wine list, and it carries an AAA listing as well, which in a town this size is not common. It sits on Earl Garrett a block off Water Street, with street parking only.

Third because it is the downtown room to book when the occasion matters. The one caution is the schedule, which is the most inconsistently reported of anything on this list. We found three different sets of hours across three directories, so this is a phone call rather than a drive-by.

Go-to order or tip: Street parking only, and the published hours cannot be trusted. Call the restaurant and ask specifically whether dinner is being served that night.

Hours
A daytime service through the week with a shorter weekend. Three directories give three different schedules, so call before you go

Pint and Plow Brewing Co

Clay Street, just off downtown · $$

Known for A brewpub that opens early enough to be a coffee and breakfast stop too

A working brewpub with a kitchen doing sandwiches, salads, pizzas and snacks, listed by the visitor bureau and reviewed by Fodor's, which notes it keeps small-town hours and closes by 9pm. The unusual thing is the opening time, with the bureau listing an 8am start on most days, which makes it a coffee stop in the morning and a beer stop at night in the same room.

Fourth because it is the most useful all-day address in Kerrville and because the Kerr County Lead's July 2026 flood recovery guide listed it among the businesses open and trading, which is a harder verification than a directory entry.

Go-to order or tip: It closes by 9pm and takes a day off midweek. Use it for the long middle of the day rather than a late night.

Hours
Most days from morning until around 9pm, with a midweek closure. Confirm the closed day before you plan around it

Hill Country Cafe

Main Street, downtown · $

Known for A 6am breakfast counter that the visitor bureau bills as a Texas legend

The CVB lists this one as "Hill Country Cafe, A Texas Legend" and describes it as a beloved local spot doing hearty home cooking. It opens at 6am, which no other restaurant on this list comes close to, and it shuts in the early afternoon. Saturday is a short morning service and Sunday is closed.

Fifth because it is the best cheap breakfast in Kerrville and the one place on this list where you will be eating alongside people who live here on a weekday morning. Note that it runs cash only with an ATM on site, though at least one recent review reports cards being taken, so bring cash and do not count on plastic.

Go-to order or tip: Bring cash. Get there before 8am on a Saturday, because the doors close around 11am that day.

Hours
From 6am to early afternoon through the week, with a short Saturday morning only. Sources differ on Monday

Grape Juice

Water Street, downtown · $$

Known for A wine bar with a real kitchen behind it rather than a cheese plate

Texas Highways and the San Antonio Current have both written this one up, the Current under the line that it brings the wine experience down to earth, which is the right summary. It is a wine bar with a beer list and a small kitchen attached, on Water Street in the middle of downtown, and the Kerr County Lead listed it among the businesses open after the July 2026 flood.

Sixth because it is a bar first and a restaurant second, and we would rather be clear about that than oversell it. For a drink and a good plate downtown before or after dinner somewhere else, it is the best room in Kerrville.

Go-to order or tip: Closed Sunday and Monday, which is when most visitors go looking. Treat it as a Tuesday to Saturday plan.

Hours
Tuesday to Saturday, late morning to evening, closed Sunday and Monday

Thai Ocha

Water Street, downtown · $$

Known for The only Thai kitchen downtown, with a river view from the patio

Thai Ocha is listed by the Kerrville CVB at 417 Water Street and named in the bureau's own patio dining guide as one of the handful of restaurants in town where you can eat with a river view, alongside Billy Gene's and Taqueria Jalisco. It is the only Thai restaurant that turns up consistently across the downtown listings.

Seventh and last because we could not verify a phone number or current hours from any source we trust, and we will not print numbers we have not confirmed. The restaurant is listed and located, the schedule is not. Walk past it rather than driving to it.

Go-to order or tip: We could not verify hours, so make this an opportunistic stop while you are already on Water Street rather than the plan for the evening.

Hours
Not published by the visitor bureau and inconsistent elsewhere, so call or check in person before a trip

How did we pick these?

Kerrville needed more verification work than most towns this size, and the reason is the river. The Guadalupe has flooded Kerr County in two consecutive Julys, 2025 and 2026, and the aggregator sites have not kept up. Restaurant listings that rank well in search are still advertising businesses that are gone.

So we did it the other way round. We started from the Kerrville Convention and Visitors Bureau directory, then cross-checked every candidate against the Kerr County Lead's flood recovery reporting, which published running lists of which businesses were actually open and trading in the days after the July 2026 flood. That is a far better test of whether a restaurant exists right now than a review count.

Two names that rank well got cut on that basis. 1011 Bistro, open since 2012 and still listed all over the web, announced its permanent closure in September 2025 after the July 4 flood, per KSAT. Buzzie's BBQ has closed its Kerrville location. We also cut Vecinos Cafe on Water Street, where listings split between permanently closed and reopened under new ownership serving Korean food, because we could not establish which is true. And we left off the Pinnacle Grill, which sits inside The Club at Comanche Trace and whose public access we could not confirm.

No partner or client of ours appears on this list. Hello Web Designs has not built a website for any business in Kerr County, so every entry here is an ordinary editorial pick, ranked on what we could verify.

What should you know before you go?

Check hours, genuinely. Kerrville restaurants keep short and idiosyncratic schedules, and the published versions conflict more here than anywhere we have researched recently. Francisco's had three different schedules across three directories. Thai Ocha publishes none at all.

The second thing is that Kerrville closes early. Pint and Plow is shut by 9pm. Hill Country Cafe closes in the early afternoon. Grape Juice is dark Sunday and Monday. Arriving at 8pm on a Sunday leaves you with a very short list.

Restaurant Best for Price The catch
Rails at the Depot The best meal in town $$ Closed Sunday
Billy Gene's River views, home cooking $$ Listings disagree on opening
Francisco's Dinner and wine downtown $$$ Hours unreliable, call first
Pint and Plow All day, coffee to beer $$ Closes by 9pm, midweek day off
Hill Country Cafe 6am breakfast, cheap $ Bring cash, closes early
Grape Juice A drink with a real plate $$ Closed Sunday and Monday
Thai Ocha Thai, a river view $$ Hours unverified

If you are heading for the river itself, know that the Kerrville River Trail and the river parks, including Louise Hays Park and Tranquility Island, have had extended closures for flood damage assessment. Check the city's current status rather than assuming the trail is walkable.

What else is worth the drive from Kerrville?

Kerrville works best as a base. Fredericksburg is about 24 miles north and has a deeper restaurant bench, covered in the best restaurants in Fredericksburg. Boerne is half an hour southeast toward San Antonio, and the best things to do in Boerne covers that end of the Hill Country. Both are easy day trips from a Kerrville hotel.

What should you do next?

Book Rails for dinner on a weeknight and ask for the patio. Eat breakfast at Hill Country Cafe with cash in your pocket. If the weather is good, make Billy Gene's an early dinner for the river. That is three meals and it is the best version of two days here.

The Kerrville city guide collects everything else we publish on the town, and the best restaurants in Texas city by city runs the same research everywhere else we cover.

Frequently Asked Questions
