Denton is a two-university town with a genuinely good design scene, and almost none of that shows up when you search for a web designer here. What shows up is Atlanta, Dallas and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, all writing about Denton. This list is what is left after you take those out.
How did we pick these?
One test above all others: is there a real Denton address behind the name?
We started from the agency directories, the chamber categories and the search results, then went to each company's own website and checked what it was willing to put in writing. An agency that publishes a street address, a local phone number and a founding year is making claims you can check. An agency that publishes a city name and a contact form is not. Both can do excellent work. Only one of them can be verified, and this site does not rank what it cannot verify.
That standard knocked out more than it kept, and it also shaped the order. Square 205 is first because every claim it makes is checkable from outside: the address, the 940 number, the September 2011 start, the client list. Aspiro is third rather than first because the work looks right but we could not confirm a single detail outside its own pages.
What we cut, and why it matters. The Denton web design result set is unusually full of agencies that are somewhere else:
- Double Up Digital writes about Denton enterprises and nonprofits from 4470 Chamblee Dunwoody Road in Atlanta, Georgia.
- Red Spot Design publishes Denton pages from a head office on Lyndon B Johnson Freeway in Dallas.
- Freshy, EZMarketing, Big Drop and Emulent all run Denton city pages from outside Texas or outside the metroplex.
- Distillery Creative is the sharpest example. Its directory profile claims a top one percent ranking among Denton digital marketing agencies and a Best of Denton County win for 2015 to 2016. Its own website lists its locations as Dallas and Washington DC, and business directories place it in Bartonville. It may well be good. It is not a Denton agency.
None of these are frauds. They are national firms using a normal marketing tactic. But if you want somebody who can sit in your shop and look at your actual problem, a city landing page is not what you are buying.
Our disclosure, up front. Hello Web Designs publishes The Very Best of Texas, and because it works statewide our scaffolding tool automatically pre-filled it into this article, labelled as the publisher. We deleted it. This list is built on having a real Denton address, our studio is a couple of hours east in Paris, and by our own standard here we would be one of the city landing pages we just spent four paragraphs criticising. It stays on our Paris list, where it is labelled. Our ranking policy explains how we handle this.
Which Denton firm fits which problem?
| Firm | Location verified by | Best at | Watch for |
| Square 205 | Own site, street address, 940 number | Design, build and production together | Nothing significant |
| Anvil and Hammer | Directories only | Websites with software behind them | No phone or address on its own site |
| Aspiro Agency | Own site, city only | SEO and paid advertising | No address or phone published |
| Denton Web Studios | Own site, street address, 940 number | Build plus photo, video and drone | Part of a multi-city network |
| Halcyon Websites | Directories only | Affordable mobile-first builds | 903 area code, not Denton's 940 |
| Bocivus Solutions | Business records only | Web plus hosting and webmaster service | Toll-free number, no address on site |
Read that middle column before the first one. Three of these six are strongest at something other than building a website: Aspiro at search, Anvil and Hammer at software, Denton Web Studios at production. Hiring the wrong one is the most expensive mistake available here, and it is also the easiest to avoid.
What should you know before you call?
Get ownership settled first, in writing, before any money changes hands. Domain registered in your name with your email as the administrative contact. Administrator access to the hosting and the content management system. Your own analytics property. Your own Google Business Profile. Three of the six firms here bundle hosting with the build, which is convenient right up until the day you want to move.
Then separate the build from the upkeep. A website needs plugin updates, backups, uptime monitoring and security patching for as long as it exists, and when those are folded into a single build price you have no idea what you are paying for them or what happens in year two. Ask for the maintenance line separately even if you intend to buy it.
Last, be honest about what is broken. If customers cannot find you, that is search. If they find you and leave, that is the site. If they find you, stay, and still do not understand what you sell, that is messaging. Those are three different purchases.
What should you do next?
Shortlist two firms from different rows of that table and ask both the same questions: who owns the domain, what does the finished site load in, who writes the copy, what does maintenance cost in year two, and can we see something you built for a business like mine. Ask to meet at their office. The ones with a real Denton address will say yes.
