The Best Bed and Breakfasts in Jefferson, TX

Most Jefferson inns are one house with three to six rooms. The Carriage House is four properties at once, which is why it wins here. There are rooms in the main home and five more in the carriage house behind it, then two bedrooms in the circa 1850s Sam Houston house across the street and three gallery-themed rooms at what they call The Gallery, for fourteen bedrooms in total.

Jessi and BW took over in 2014. Breakfast is multi-course and served daily on fixed seatings rather than whenever you wander down, and the kitchen also runs dinner on Friday and Saturday nights, which no other bed and breakfast in Jefferson does. Signature plates include breakfast enchiladas, Italian frittatas and eggs Benedict.

Four rooms sit in the main house and five more in the cottages on the grounds, and the cottage rooms are the reason to come. They give you a private entrance and a quieter night than a bedroom off a shared upstairs hall, which matters more than people expect on a Jefferson weekend when the ghost walk lets out at nine thirty.

Every bath is individually fitted, with claw-footed tubs in some rooms, two-person tubs and double showers in others. Breakfast runs three courses. The inn describes itself as the first AAA-approved bed and breakfast in Jefferson, which is its own claim rather than one we could confirm with AAA directly.

White Oak Manor is the Jefferson property that turns up in the Texas Bed and Breakfast Association's Great Stays of Texas directory, which lists only inns that have passed the association's inspection. That is a real credential and it is rare here. Nothing else in town surfaced in the same directory when we checked.

The house dates to the 1920s and was built in the Greek Revival style by the county's first extension agent, according to the inn. There are five guest rooms, each with a private bath, coffee and tea service in the room and a full breakfast included. It is adults only, so it is the wrong call for a family trip and the right one for a quiet anniversary.

This is the newest full restoration on the list. The house was built in 1895, is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, and came out of a complete restoration in 2022, so you get the Victorian exterior without the tired wiring and worn bathrooms that sometimes come with it. The marker outside notes the drawing room's role in the social life of the port years, and locals long called it the Gay 90s house.

There are three guest rooms in the house and two separate cottages, all with private baths, antique furnishings, Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. There is a parlor, a coffee bar and a porch on well-kept grounds.

The house went up in 1860 as a single-story Greek Revival, gained a second story and a widow's walk in 1901, spent years as a boarding house, then went through an eighteen-month restoration after new owners bought it in 1988 and reopened it as an inn in 1989. Tom and Tracey Engel bought the property in 2016 and reopened it in 2017 with a Marion County Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting, which the Marshall News Messenger covered.

It sits a short walk from the Carnegie library and Sterne Fountain, close enough to downtown to leave the car. Note that some booking sites list five rooms while the inn's own site lists six, so confirm what you are getting when you call.

Built in 1872 in a modified late Greek Revival style, and the interior is the argument for it. The original heart pine floors, baseboards, molding and stairway are still in place, the ceilings run thirteen feet, and the furnishings are 1800s American Empire rather than reproduction. Breakfast is a full Southern spread served in the dining room, with dishes like strawberry soup, eggs Benedict in puff pastry and blueberry coffee cake turning up on the menu.

Jefferson is wall-to-wall Victorian gingerbread, and after two days of it some people want a room with straight lines. Delta Street Inn is a prairie style house built around 1920, restored, with six bedrooms and six and a half baths, big shade trees and an expansive lawn that none of the in-town inns can match.

Rooms carry king beds and lean toward comfortable new furnishings with antique accents rather than a period recreation. Breakfast is served in the dining room with coffee out early.

Only two suites, both large, with a combined twenty-two windows and a balcony over downtown. The location is the whole point. You are on West Austin Street, the same block as the antique shops and a short walk from where the ghost walk forms up, so you can shop, eat and walk back without moving the car once.

A weekend wine and tea reception, a home-cooked breakfast, a Keurig in the room with tea and cocoa pods, board games and a bubble bath come with it.

Built in 1873, this is one of the oldest houses taking guests in Jefferson and one of the few in a clear Stick Eastlake style, gingerbread trim and all. A full renovation in 2007 brought a new roof and the six-color paint scheme that makes it easy to find from the street. Five guest rooms and a full breakfast.
