How did we pick these?
We started from the Visit Killeen restaurant directory and the current review rankings for the city, then checked every candidate against its own website where it had one. Brick and Forge was confirmed against Killeen Daily Herald coverage of its opening. Cassidy's Grill was confirmed against the visitor bureau listing and local trade press covering the takeover of the previous burger restaurant on that site.
There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. Nothing was pre-filled when the file was scaffolded and nobody paid for a place.
Three cuts are worth explaining, because they are the traps in this particular city.
First, geography. Acropolis and Arepitas both rank near the top of Killeen searches and both are in Harker Heights, a separate city about ten minutes east in a different zip code. They are not on this list. Neither is anything in Copperas Cove or Belton.
Second, a restaurant we could not confirm. The Rong Place on South Fort Hood Street is the highest rated place in Killeen on the biggest review site, and we could not find a website, a phone listing we trusted or any independent coverage to verify what it currently is or whether the address holds. We would rather run eight verified entries than nine with a guess in it.
Third, Maru. It appears on the visitor bureau's own site and its review listing now carries a closed marker, so the two sources contradict each other and we left it out.
Where hours disagreed across sources we described the pattern instead of asserting a time. That applies to Hierba Fresca and Takumi House in particular, and both cards say so.
Why is there so much Puerto Rican food in Killeen?
Because of Fort Cavazos. Half this list is Puerto Rican, which is not true of any other Texas city this size, and it is the single most interesting thing about eating here. The post next door has drawn soldiers and their families from Puerto Rico for decades, and the food followed them.
The practical version is that the four are not interchangeable. Coqui is a bakery counter for the morning. Tex-Rican is a weekday plate lunch. Hierba Fresca is a weekend kitchen on short hours. La Garita is the only one of the four you can reliably use for dinner.
What should you know before you go?
Killeen closes early and closes unevenly, and no two of these keep the same week.
| Restaurant | Price | Best for | Closed |
| Brick and Forge Taproom | $$ | A late dinner | Open daily |
| Coqui Cafe | $ | Breakfast and pastry | Sunday |
| La Garita | $$ | Puerto Rican dinner | Tuesday |
| Cassidy's Grill | $ | The burger | Monday |
| Takumi House | $$ | Hibachi with a group | Monday |
| Tikka Twist | $$ | Indian, mostly takeaway | Monday |
| Tex-Rican | $ | A weekday lunch | Weekends |
| Hierba Fresca | $ | A weekend plate, if it is open | Most weekdays |
Monday takes out three of the eight. Sunday takes out Coqui and Tex-Rican and shortens Cassidy's to four in the afternoon. If you are here midweek on a tight schedule, Brick and Forge and La Garita are the two that will be open when you get there.
Everything on this list has its own parking. Most of it sits on one of the two Stan Schlueter loops or on Fort Hood Street, both of which are five to fifteen minutes from the installation gates.
What should you do next?
If you have one meal in Killeen, make it dinner at Brick and Forge or a plate of pernil at La Garita. If you have a morning, go to Coqui before it shuts.
Everything we publish on the city collects on the Killeen city hub. Up the road, our Temple restaurant rankings cover the larger Bell County neighbor, and the Waco list picks it up further north on I-35. The full restaurants category has every town we have ranked.
