The Best Places to Stay in Marfa, Texas

Nine Marfa hotels and guesthouses verified open in October 2026, after the two most famous names in town, Hotel Paisano and El Cosmico, both went dark.

The Short Answer

Hotel Saint George is the best place to stay in Marfa, 55 rooms on Highland Avenue with a bar, a restaurant and a pool. Book early, because Marfa lost two of its best known properties this year. Hotel Paisano is closed for renovation until spring 2027 and the original El Cosmico is closed for good.

Hotel Saint George

Highland Avenue, downtown · $$$

Known for The only full service hotel in town, with a bar and a restaurant under the same roof

Fifty five rooms on the original 1880s hotel footprint, rebuilt by Carlos Jimenez Studio in concrete, plywood and steel, with an art collection hung through the public rooms. It is the one address in Marfa where you can check in, eat dinner, have a drink and buy a book without moving your car.

Bar Saint George and the LaVenture restaurant are both on site, along with a seasonal pool, a fitness room and Hey I Like It Here, the hotel shop and gallery. The courthouse is two blocks north and the Chinati Foundation is a ten minute drive south.

Go-to order or tip: Book further out than you think. This is the first place in town to sell out for Chinati Weekend and the Trans-Pecos Festival.

Thunderbird Hotel

West San Antonio Street, four blocks from the courthouse · $$$

Known for A 1959 roadside motel rebuilt by Lake Flato around its original courtyard

Twenty four rooms in a horseshoe around a courtyard, originally built in 1959 and gutted and reworked by Bob Harris of Lake Flato Architects for a 2005 reopening. Every room opens onto the breezeway rather than an interior corridor, which is the whole point of a motel and the thing most renovations throw away.

The pool and the courtyard planting do more work here than the rooms do. If you want to spend an afternoon reading outside instead of driving, this is the better of the two design hotels in town.

Go-to order or tip: The hotel runs a sister property, Antelope Lodge in Alpine, 26 miles east. Ask about it when Marfa is full.

The Lincoln Marfa

West Lincoln Street, three blocks off Highland · $$$

Known for Apartment style suites around a courtyard with a fire pit

A compound of courtyard suites rather than a corridor of hotel rooms, twelve of them by the property's own count, each with a kitchen and a private patio. One of them is a 1950s bomb shelter that was converted rather than filled in.

Sources disagree on the unit count, which is what happens when a property adds rooms a few at a time, so treat the number as approximate and the format as the point. Kitchens matter in a town where the restaurants keep short and shifting hours.

Go-to order or tip: The kitchens are real, not kitchenettes. Stock up at the Get Go on South Dean before you arrive.

Marfa House

East Oak Street, two blocks from the courthouse · $$

Known for Eleven units in an 1892 two story adobe that was the original railroad hotel

The building opened in 1892 as lodging for railroad travelers and spent most of the twentieth century as a hotel and way station. A long restoration kept the adobe and the two story form and put kitchens, mini splits and gas fireplaces inside it.

The eleven units range from two bedroom apartments down to studio efficiencies, and the shared second floor balcony, ground floor gallery and screened atrium are the parts guests actually use. One unit has an accessible bathroom. There is no elevator.

Go-to order or tip: Bookings go through the manager rather than an instant booking engine. Call between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central.

The Brite Building

Highland Street, downtown · $$$

Known for The one piece of El Cosmico still open, a 1931 art deco apartment downtown

El Cosmico's downtown annex, built in 1931, is a 3,800 square foot apartment with two king bedrooms, private bathrooms and full living, dining and kitchen rooms behind panoramic windows. The base rate covers four guests and it sleeps up to eight with roll-aways.

This is the only part of El Cosmico that survived the closure of the original campground, and it is the best answer in Marfa for a group of four to eight who want one address downtown instead of three separate rooms.

Go-to order or tip: There is no published phone line. Book through the El Cosmico site or email them directly.

Corte del Norte

East San Antonio Street, walkable to the galleries · $$$

Known for Three rentable houses around a shared courtyard with a stock tank pool

A compound of three houses, the Love House, the Rock City House and Abuelitas Next Door, sharing a courtyard with a stock tank pool, a semi-outdoor billiards room and a glass and adobe dining shed. Guests get an exercise room and two electric bikes.

It doubles as a wedding and event venue, which is worth knowing both ways. Book the whole compound and you have the run of it. Book one house on a weekend and you may be sharing the courtyard with a party.

Go-to order or tip: Ask what else is booked on your dates before you commit to a single house.

Carmen's Marfa Hotel

East San Antonio Street · $$

Known for Six suites in a remodeled family adobe, with European style shared baths on four of them

A small self service property in a remodeled family adobe, six rooms in total. Four are European style with communal baths, two have en suite bathrooms, and every room has a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker and its own air conditioning.

Check-in is contactless, parking is on site and behind a gate, and there is a shared lounge, a covered patio and a grill. It is the most straightforward way to sleep within walking distance of downtown without paying design hotel rates.

Go-to order or tip: Confirm which room type you are booking. The four communal bath rooms and the two en suite rooms are priced and configured differently.

Riata Inn

East Highway 90, just outside town · $

Known for The biggest rooms in Marfa and the closest beds to the Marfa Lights viewing area

A plain motel on the east edge of town with rooms the property advertises at over 450 square feet, plus fridges, microwaves, a seasonal outdoor pool and pet friendly options. Nobody books it for the design. They book it because it is clean, cheap and large.

It is also the closest lodging to the Marfa Lights viewing area nine miles east on Highway 90, which matters if you plan to go out after dark and come back without a twenty minute drive at both ends.

Go-to order or tip: Check-in starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 11 a.m. Rates swing hard on festival weekends, so compare before you assume it is the cheap option.

Glampinn Marfa

East Highway 90, next to the Riata Inn · $$

Known for Shipping container tiny homes with rooftop decks for stargazing

Seven container homes, six built from 20 foot containers and one from a 40 foot container, each with a queen bed, a private bathroom, a mini fridge, a microwave and a rooftop deck. The decks are the reason to book, because Marfa's sky after dark is the main attraction and you do not have to leave the property to see it.

It shares a phone line and a reservations email with the Riata Inn next door, so the two are run together. With El Cosmico closed, this is the nearest thing Marfa still has to a glamping stay.

Go-to order or tip: Bring a jacket even in summer. Marfa sits at 4,685 feet and the rooftop decks get cold once the sun goes down.

How did we pick these?

We started from the lodging list on Visit Marfa, the city's own tourism site, cross-checked it against the Marfa Chamber of Commerce hotels and lodging directory, and then opened every property's own website to confirm it is taking bookings right now. Anything that failed that last step came off the list, which is why two famous names are missing.

Nobody on this list is a client of ours, and nothing here is sponsored. There are no partner listings in this article.

Two things made this harder than a normal lodging roundup. First, Marfa is small enough that the aggregator sites pad their results with properties in Alpine, Fort Davis and Valentine without saying so. We cut all of them. Second, the two properties that most "best of Marfa" lists still rank at the top are both closed, and several of those lists are still taking affiliate clicks for them.

What is actually closed in Marfa right now?

Hotel Paisano, the 1930 Trost and Trost landmark where the cast of Giant stayed in 1955, changed hands on 1 July 2026 and closed for renovation. Its own site gives a staged reopening: the bar in October 2026, the restaurant in early 2027, and the hotel rooms in spring 2027. The Marfa Chamber of Commerce still keeps its visitor office in the building, which is part of why so many directories still show the hotel as open.

El Cosmico, the trailer, yurt and tepee campground on South Highland, is closed. Its own announcement says the original campground is finished and the replacement, a 60 acre development on the edge of town, has no public opening date. The one piece still running is the Brite Building, its 1931 apartment downtown, which is on this list at number five.

Between them those two carried a large share of the town's rooms and nearly all of its campsites. Book earlier than you would have two years ago.

What should you know before you go?

Marfa sits at 4,685 feet in the high desert, so nights are cold well into spring and the shoulder seasons swing twenty or thirty degrees in a day. The town is walkable between Highland Avenue and the courthouse, and not walkable to anything else.

Where you stay Best for Walk to downtown Kitchen
Hotel Saint George A hotel that does everything on site Yes, it is downtown No
Thunderbird Hotel An afternoon by the pool Four blocks No
The Lincoln Marfa Longer stays Three blocks Yes
Marfa House History and a lower rate Two blocks Most units
The Brite Building Groups of four to eight Yes, it is downtown Yes
Corte del Norte Taking over a compound Yes Yes
Carmen's Marfa Hotel Walkable and inexpensive Yes No, but fridge and microwave
Riata Inn Big rooms, lowest rate, Marfa Lights No, drive in No
Glampinn Marfa Stargazing from your own roof No, drive in No

Restaurant hours in Marfa are short and they move. Several places close two or three days a week and stop serving earlier than you expect, so a room with a kitchen or at least a fridge is worth more here than it would be in a bigger town. The grocery options are limited, and the nearest full supermarket is in Alpine.

The Chinati Foundation books tours in advance and its Artillery Sheds close in October 2026 for a multi-year restoration, so check what is actually open before you plan a trip around it. Our guide to the best things to do in Marfa tracks that, along with which of the Judd installations are still viewable.

What should you do next?

Pick your dates first, then your room, because in Marfa the inventory decides the trip rather than the other way around. If you want one address that handles dinner and drinks too, book Hotel Saint George. If you are travelling with another couple or a family, the Brite Building and the three houses at Corte del Norte are better value than two hotel rooms. If you are coming mainly for the night sky, take Glampinn or the Riata Inn and save the difference.

Then check the rest of the region. More lodging in the Marfa city guide, other verified stays in the hotels section, and if Marfa is sold out, Alpine and Fort Davis are both inside half an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Hotel Paisano changed hands on 1 July 2026 and closed for renovation. Its own site gives a staged reopening, with the bar in October 2026, the restaurant in early 2027 and the hotel rooms in spring 2027. Do not book a room there for a trip before then.

Not at the original campground. El Cosmico's trailers, yurts, tepees and tent sites on South Highland are closed, and the announcement on its own site gives no reopening date for the new 60 acre property. The Brite Building, its 1931 apartment downtown, is still bookable.

Further than you would for a town of about 2,100 people. The city's own lodging list runs to a dozen properties, most of them under 25 rooms, and two of the largest are offline, so Chinati Weekend in October, the Trans-Pecos Festival and most spring weekends sell out months ahead.

Alpine is 26 miles east and has the most rooms in the region, including Antelope Lodge, which is run by the Thunderbird. Fort Davis is 21 miles north and keeps a handful of historic inns. Both are an easy drive back to Marfa for dinner or the Marfa Lights.

Yes. There is no public transport, the Chinati Foundation is on the south edge of town, and the Marfa Lights viewing area is nine miles east on Highway 90. Downtown itself is walkable, so a room near Highland Avenue cuts the driving down to the out of town trips.
