The Best Restaurants in Round Rock

Ten Round Rock restaurants verified open in 2026, from Michelin trained chefs doing Italian off I-35 to handmade pasta downtown and Peruvian charcoal chicken.

The Very Best of Texas Editors 3 min read How we rank →

The Short Answer

Sushi Yume is the best restaurant in Round Rock, a small room on the I-35 frontage road that Austin critics rate against the city's best sushi. Frank and Margie's is the biggest arrival, opened in May 2026 by the Michelin starred Scratch Restaurants team, and Palermo Pasta House is the downtown one to book.

Sushi Yume

I-35 frontage road, south Round Rock · $$$

Known for Sushi that Austin critics rank against the best in the metro, from a suburban suite

The Infatuation's Austin edition puts this among the best sushi in the greater Austin area, which is not a thing Austin writers say about Round Rock suites off the frontage road. The twelve piece chef's choice is the order that makes the case. The wider menu covers ramen, tempura, teriyaki and hibachi, so a table that does not all want raw fish still works.

It is small and it closes between lunch and dinner. That midday break catches people out, especially anyone rolling in from I-35 at three in the afternoon expecting a suburban restaurant to be open.

Go-to order or tip: Two different phone numbers are published for this place, so book or order through the site rather than calling a number you found on an aggregator.

Hours
Closed Sunday and Monday, with a lunch service and a dinner service on the days it opens

Frank and Margie's

I-35 frontage road, south Round Rock · $$$

Known for Neighborhood Italian American from the Michelin starred Scratch Restaurants team

Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee opened this on May 16, 2026. They run Scratch Restaurants Group, whose Pasta Bar and Sushi by Scratch have held Michelin stars, and the kitchen here is led by Grae Nonas, who helped open Olamaie and Bufalina in Austin. That is a serious amount of credential for a suite on the frontage road, and it is the most interesting thing to happen to Round Rock dining in years.

The format is deliberately casual Italian American. Thin crust pizza with toppings like candied jalapeno with bone marrow, lamb ragu pappardelle, lobster cavatelli, rigatoni alla vodka, and a rotating tiramisu Kallas-Lee makes with her sourdough starter. Italian wine from small producers, Texas beer and cocktails.

Go-to order or tip: It is dinner only and dark on Monday and Tuesday. Reserve, because the room is not large and the opening attention has not worn off.

Hours
Dinner only, closed Monday and Tuesday, with later closing Friday and Saturday

Palermo Pasta House

Downtown, on Main Street · $$

Known for Handmade pasta and thin crust pizza in the historic Carrington Building

This is the downtown one. It sits in the Carrington Building, a white stone landmark in the middle of the Main Street strip, and it makes its pasta fresh rather than buying it in. You pick a pasta and pick a sauce, which sounds simple and is exactly why people keep coming back to it, and the thin crust pizzas hold up alongside.

It is the most reliably busy table downtown, and it does not open Monday or Tuesday, which concentrates everybody into five days.

Go-to order or tip: Walk here rather than driving. It is a short stroll from the parking around the Round Rock itself, and the Main Street spaces in front go first.

Hours
Closed Monday and Tuesday, open midday through the evening the rest of the week

Brasas Peruanas

North Mays Street · $$

Known for Pollo a la brasa turned over charcoal, with a full pisco bar

Charcoal roasted Peruvian chicken is the whole point, and it is done properly here rather than as one item on a pan Latin menu. Around it sit anticuchos, papas rellenas, ceviches, seafood soup and lomo saltado, plus carapulcra, which is not a dish you find in most Texas suburbs.

There is also a full pisco bar, which is the part people do not expect. A maracuya sour made with fresh passion fruit is the drink to order with the chicken.

Go-to order or tip: Order the chicken by the half or whole bird for a table rather than as a plate. It is the cheaper way to feed four and you still get the sides.

Hours
Open daily, closing mid evening Sunday through Thursday and later Friday and Saturday

Finley's Kitchen and Bar

Downtown, West Main Street · $$

Known for A big downtown patio, a scratch kitchen and one of the deeper bourbon lists in Central Texas

Finley's is the default downtown Round Rock evening and it earns it on the patio, which is large, faces the main strip and is the best people watching in town. The kitchen is a scratch kitchen, the burgers are what it is known for, and the drinking food around them is solid rather than an afterthought.

The bar is the other half of the argument. Bourbon is the depth, tequila is respectable, and the local craft beer list is kept current. Expect it to be loud on a Friday.

Go-to order or tip: The kitchen shuts an hour before the doors do, at 9pm Sunday through Thursday and 10pm Friday and Saturday. Order food before you settle in for a last round.

Hours
Open daily from late morning, from mid morning at weekends, with the kitchen closing an hour before the bar

Subham Chettinad Grill

I-35 frontage road, south Round Rock · $$

Known for South Indian Chettinad cooking and dosas the size of the plate

Round Rock has a large South Asian population and a correspondingly serious Indian restaurant scene, and this is the one that gets named outside the suburb. Chettinad cooking from Tamil Nadu is the specialism, which means heat and black pepper rather than cream, and the dosas come out enormous.

It runs a bar as well as a kitchen, and weekends bring biryani. Note the Tuesday closure and the weekday afternoon gap between services.

Go-to order or tip: Go at the weekend if you want the biryani, and go at lunch if you want the dosa without a wait.

Hours
Closed Tuesday, with a lunch and dinner split on weekdays and straight through at weekends

Ghama Zone

Downtown, on Main Street · $$

Known for Korean cooking downtown that does not stay inside the standard menu

Ghama Zone is two doors from Palermo on the same block of East Main, and it is the more adventurous of the two. The menu takes Korean classics somewhere else, with truffle potato pancakes and sous vide short ribs among the dishes that get singled out, and there is sushi alongside the Korean side for tables that split.

Downtown Round Rock is short on genuinely different cooking. This is the entry that fixes that, and it is walkable from everything else on the strip.

Go-to order or tip: Weekdays it closes between lunch and dinner. Friday through Sunday it runs straight through, which makes it the mid afternoon option downtown.

Hours
Open daily, with a weekday afternoon break and straight through Friday to Sunday

The Bayou Shack

East Palm Valley Boulevard · $$

Known for Build your own Cajun seafood boils, crawfish in season

A boil is a specific thing to get right and this is the closest one to Austin that does it well. You build your own from crawfish, several kinds of crab, shrimp and sausage, or take a Shack Sack combination that comes with corn and potatoes. There is draft beer, there are screens, and there is a covered patio.

Crawfish is seasonal and the price moves with the season, so check before you plan a crawfish night around it in late summer.

Go-to order or tip: Wear something you do not care about and ask for the sauce on the side of the bag if you want to control the heat rather than discover it.

Hours
Closed Monday, open daily otherwise from late morning to mid evening

Little Mama's

North Mays Street · $

Known for Family recipe Filipino cooking, chicken adobo and oxtail kare kare

Filipino restaurants are thin on the ground in Central Texas and this is a genuinely good one, cooking family recipes rather than a tourist version. Chicken adobo and oxtail kare kare are the two dishes people come back for, and the prices are the lowest on this list by a distance.

The catch is the schedule. This is a lunch restaurant. It closes in the afternoon most days, it is shut on Tuesday, and Sunday finishes around the middle of the day, so it will never be your dinner plan.

Go-to order or tip: Call ahead. The kitchen is small, the queue at lunch is real, and ordering before you drive over is the difference between 10 minutes and 40.

Hours
Daytime only, closing in the afternoon or early evening and shutting earliest on Sunday

Hoody's Subs

Round Rock Avenue, west of downtown · $

Known for East coast style subs on Boar's Head meat, in Round Rock since 1989

Hoody's has been making sandwiches in Round Rock since 1989, which in a city that has quadrupled in that time makes it close to an institution. Nearly 20 sandwiches, built on Boar's Head meats and cheeses, out of a strip mall that gives away nothing.

The meatball sub is the one the Austin food press singles out. It is the cheapest good lunch in this article.

Go-to order or tip: It shuts at 7pm and is closed all day Sunday. This is a lunch stop, not a dinner one.

Hours
Monday through Saturday daytime, closed Sunday

How did we pick these?

We built the shortlist from two sources that do not share a business model. The Infatuation's Austin edition covers Round Rock as part of its metro coverage and has no local advertising relationship, and the Round Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau keeps a dining directory of businesses inside the city. Anything that appeared in both went on the candidate list. Then we went to each restaurant's own site or its ordering page for the address, the phone number and the current schedule, and used CultureMap and the Austin American-Statesman to confirm the Frank and Margie's opening and its ownership.

There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. Nothing was pre-filled into the file and nobody paid to be here.

What we cut, and why. National and regional chains came off first, which takes out most of what lines I-35 and University Boulevard. Whiskey Cake is a Dallas group, The Salt Lick here is an outpost of the Driftwood original, and Jack Allen's Kitchen, which locals genuinely love, is an Austin founded group with several locations, so it gets named here instead of ranked. Round Rock Donuts is the most famous food business in the city and it is a bakery, so it belongs in a donut article and not this one.

Two facts we would not assert. Sushi Yume has two different phone numbers in circulation, one on the visitor bureau listing and one on the aggregators, so we published neither and pointed you at the site. Little Mama's closing times vary by a couple of hours across sources, so its card describes the pattern rather than printing a time.

What should you know before you go?

Round Rock splits into two dining zones that have nothing to do with each other. Downtown is walkable, historic and where the evening is. The I-35 frontage road, three miles south, is where the two most ambitious kitchens in the city happen to sit, in suites, behind parking lots.

Restaurant Zone Price Closed
Sushi Yume I-35 frontage $$$ Sunday and Monday
Frank and Margie's I-35 frontage $$$ Monday and Tuesday
Palermo Pasta House Downtown $$ Monday and Tuesday
Brasas Peruanas N Mays St $$ Open daily
Finley's Downtown $$ Open daily
Subham Chettinad I-35 frontage $$ Tuesday
Ghama Zone Downtown $$ Open daily
The Bayou Shack E Palm Valley $$ Monday
Little Mama's N Mays St $ Tuesday, and daytime only
Hoody's Subs Round Rock Ave $ Sunday, and daytime only

Monday and Tuesday are the problem nights. Four of these are shut on one or both, including both of the expensive ones, which leaves Finley's, Ghama Zone, Brasas Peruanas and, on Monday, Hoody's for lunch. Plan a Wednesday through Saturday visit if you have the choice.

The other thing to plan around is the afternoon gap. Sushi Yume, Subham Chettinad and Ghama Zone all close between lunch and dinner on weekdays, and Little Mama's and Hoody's are gone by early evening. Arriving at 3pm on a Tuesday is the single worst way to eat in this city.

Parking is free and easy everywhere except Main Street downtown on a Friday or Saturday evening, where the spaces in front fill and the lots a block back do not.

What should you do next?

If you have one dinner, make it Frank and Margie's and book it. If you want the evening rather than just the meal, park downtown, eat at Palermo or Ghama Zone, and finish on the Finley's patio.

Round Rock sits between two towns worth the short drive. Georgetown is 12 minutes north and has the cave, the courthouse square and the swimming hole, which our Georgetown things to do guide covers in full. Austin is 20 miles south. Our Round Rock city page collects everything we have published here, and the Texas restaurant rankings cover the rest of the state city by city.

Frequently Asked Questions

For two places, yes. Frank and Margie's is run by the Michelin starred Scratch Restaurants team and opened in May 2026, and Sushi Yume gets ranked against Austin sushi rooms by Austin critics. Both sit on the I-35 frontage road about 20 miles north of downtown Austin, which is a 25 to 40 minute drive depending on the corridor.

Palermo Pasta House for handmade pasta in the Carrington Building, Ghama Zone two doors along for Korean, and Finley's on West Main for the patio and the bourbon. All three are walkable from one another and from the round rock the town is named after, so you can park once.

It is the most famous food business in the city and it is not on this list because it is a bakery rather than a restaurant. Lone Star Bakery opened in 1926 and moved to 106 W Liberty Ave in 1970, and the yellow orange donuts are still hand rolled, cut, fried and iced. Go, just go for breakfast rather than dinner.

More than you would expect. Frank and Margie's is closed Monday and Tuesday, Palermo Pasta House is closed Monday and Tuesday, Sushi Yume is closed Sunday and Monday, Subham Chettinad is closed Tuesday, The Bayou Shack is closed Monday, and Little Mama's is closed Tuesday. Wednesday through Saturday is when this city eats.

Every entry on this list is independent or, in the case of Frank and Margie's, part of a small chef owned group rather than a franchise. Round Rock has plenty of national chains along I-35 and University Boulevard, and none of them made this list. Jack Allen's Kitchen is well liked locally but is an Austin founded group with several locations, so it is named here rather than ranked.

Finley's has the biggest patio downtown and it faces the main strip. URBAN Eat.Drink on South Harris Street runs live music on the back patio on Saturday nights and through weekend brunch. The Bayou Shack's patio is covered, which matters more than it sounds in July.
