The Best Hotels Near the San Antonio River Walk

Seven San Antonio hotels within a walk of the river, with addresses and room counts from each hotel's own site and the real distance to the water.

The Short Answer

Hotel Emma is the best hotel near the San Antonio River Walk, a 146-room conversion of a nineteenth century brewhouse on the Museum Reach at Pearl, about a mile north of the Alamo. For the downtown loop itself, Hotel Valencia Riverwalk sits on the water at Houston Street, and the Drury Plaza Riverwalk is the best value on the river.

Hotel Emma

Pearl, on the Museum Reach · $$$$

Known for A nineteenth century brewhouse turned 146-room hotel, and the best restaurant and bar group of any hotel in the city

The building was the Pearl Brewery's brewhouse, and the conversion left the machinery in place rather than hiding it, which is why the lobby reads like an industrial room rather than a hotel lobby. It is 146 rooms, it anchors the Pearl district, and its own site calls it the flagship of Pearl's culinary and cultural scene. Texas Highways has profiled it under the title The Crown Pearl. Three places to eat and drink without leaving: Supper, a seasonal American bistro, Larder, the market and deli, and Sternewirth, the bar in the old brewing hall.

Be clear about the location, because this is where the search term misleads. Hotel Emma is not on the downtown River Walk loop. It sits on the Museum Reach, the northern extension of the River Walk, roughly a mile from the Alamo, with the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Tobin Center within walking distance along the water. If your plan is to step out of the lobby into the restaurant-lined downtown loop, this is the wrong hotel and the next three are the right ones.

Go-to order or tip: Walk the Museum Reach south from the hotel instead of driving. It joins the downtown stretch and is the prettiest half of the whole River Walk with the fewest people on it.

Hotel Valencia Riverwalk

Houston Street, on the downtown loop · $$$

Known for River-view rooms with balcony seating, and the only tequila and mezcal bar on the River Walk

The best of the hotels that are actually on the downtown water rather than near it. Its own site leads with riverfront architecture and sells three room categories built around the view: a Premium River View Room with balcony seating, a King Deluxe with River Walk views, and an Executive King Balcony. If a balcony over the river is the reason you are booking San Antonio at all, book this and specify the category, because the standard rooms do not have it.

Downstairs, Naranja is described on the hotel's own site as the only tequila and mezcal bar on the River Walk, and Dorrego's does Pan-Latin cooking. The hotel does not publish a room count, so we are not giving one. Houston Street puts you at the north end of the busy stretch, a few minutes' walk from the Majestic Theatre and five minutes from the Alamo.

Go-to order or tip: Two reservation numbers appear on its own pages, 855.596.3387 and 866.842.0100. Call the hotel line, 210.227.9700, and skip the question.

Hotel Contessa

Market Street, on the downtown loop · $$$

Known for An all-suite layout on the river, which is the right shape for a family or a long stay

Every room here is a suite, which matters more than it sounds. Its own site lists seven suite types including Cityview, Riverview, Riverview King Corner, Executive, the Contessa suite and two accessible configurations, so a family of four gets a separate sitting room on the river for roughly what a single room costs at the luxury end of this list. It sits on the quieter western arc of the downtown loop on Market Street, a short walk from La Villita and the convention centre.

Two honest notes. The hotel's restaurant is spelled two different ways on its own homepage, Ambler in the introduction and Amber in the dining section, so do not be surprised at the sign. And the rooftop pool that every third-party guide leads with does not appear in the hotel's own description of its amenities, only in a guest testimonial on the page, so confirm it is open when you book rather than planning the afternoon around it.

Go-to order or tip: Ask for a Riverview King Corner. Corner suites on the Market Street side get the bend in the river rather than a straight section of walkway.

Drury Plaza Hotel San Antonio Riverwalk

St Mary's Street, adjacent to the river · $$

Known for Free hot breakfast and a free evening meal in the old Alamo National Bank building

The value pick, and not by a small margin. Rates aside, what Drury includes is the free hot breakfast, the 5.30 Kickback from 5.30 to 7 pm nightly with hot food and drinks, and free popcorn and soda in the lobby from 4 to 8 pm. For a family of four staying three nights on the River Walk, that is two meals a day you do not buy at River Walk restaurant prices, which is worth more than any upgrade on this page.

The building is the former Alamo National Bank, 24 storeys, with a lobby the hotel describes as having 40 foot ceilings and stained glass windows, plus an all-suite tower. It is 368 rooms, the largest here. The heated rooftop pool and two whirlpools are on the 22nd floor, open 9 am to 10 pm. Its own page lists the River Walk as adjacent and puts the Alamo and San Fernando Cathedral about a block away each.

Go-to order or tip: The 22nd floor pool deck is the best free view in downtown San Antonio and most guests never go up. Go at dusk.

The Menger Hotel

Alamo Plaza · $$

Known for Open since 1859, directly on Alamo Plaza, 316 rooms

William Menger opened a brewery here in 1855 and the hotel in 1859, which makes it the oldest hotel on this list by more than sixty years and the only one where the building is itself a reason to come. Its own site gives 316 guest rooms and suites and describes the hotel as a historic partner of the Alamo. The Victorian lobby and the Menger Bar are open to walk through whether you stay or not.

On location it is precise about something most Alamo-area hotels fudge: the hotel is directly on Alamo Plaza, adjacent to Rivercenter Mall and the River Walk. That is a two minute walk to the water through the mall, not a riverside room. Book here for the history and the Alamo at dawn before the queues, not for a balcony over the river.

Go-to order or tip: Walk down to the river through Rivercenter rather than around the block. It is shorter, it is air conditioned, and it comes out on the busiest stretch.

The Crockett Hotel

Alamo Plaza, Bonham Street side · $$

Known for 138 rooms next door to the Alamo with an outdoor pool, at a mid-range price

Smaller and quieter than the Menger across the plaza, at 138 rooms and suites, all non-smoking. Its own site places it steps from the River Walk and next to the Alamo, and lists an outdoor swimming pool, which is not a given at this price in this block. The hotel describes more than a century of hospitality on the site.

This is the pick when the Menger is full or priced above what you wanted to spend and you still want to be able to walk to the Alamo in a minute. You are a block further from the water than the Menger, which in practice means four minutes rather than two.

Go-to order or tip: Bonham Street is quieter than Alamo Plaza at night, so ask for a street-facing room here rather than avoiding one.

The Emily Morgan Hotel

East Houston Street, overlooking the Alamo · $$

Known for The 1920s Medical Arts Building, with Gothic detailing and rooms that look straight at the Alamo

The building was the Medical Arts Building, put up in the 1920s, and it is the best piece of architecture any hotel on this list occupies: a narrow Gothic revival tower that its own site says is celebrating a hundred years of history. It overlooks the Alamo and bills itself as the official hotel of the Alamo. If you want a room with a view of the mission itself rather than the river, this is the one.

Its own site cannot decide how far it is from the water, which tells you something. One part of the homepage says three blocks from the River Walk and another says just steps away. Three blocks is the honest figure and it is a flat, easy three blocks, but if the river is the point of the trip, book Valencia or Contessa instead. The hotel does not publish a room count.

Go-to order or tip: Ask specifically for an Alamo-facing room. The rooms on the other side of this narrow tower look at office buildings and cost the same.

How did we pick these?

Every address, phone number and room count above was read off the hotel's own website. No rates appear anywhere on this page, because hotel rates move daily and a published figure would be wrong by the time you read it, so the price column is a band.

That sourcing rule cost this list its most obvious entries, and we would rather say so than quietly pad the list. Mokara Hotel and Spa, Omni La Mansion del Rio, the Westin Riverwalk and the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk are all genuinely good riverside hotels. All four of their official websites refused to serve us pages during this research, returning errors rather than content, and the only details available for them came from booking marketplaces. We do not publish an address or a phone number we have not seen on the business's own site, so those four are absent. Hotel Havana, which would have been a strong boutique entry, was cut for a different reason: its domain now redirects to an error page, which is not a sign we want to send readers toward.

The second rule was honesty about distance. Hotels in this part of San Antonio describe themselves as on the River Walk from as far as three blocks away, and one hotel here contradicts itself about it on a single page. We have given the street address for each and said in the entry how far the water actually is.

No hotel on this list has any relationship with Hello Web Designs, who publish this site. Nothing above is a partner or sponsored placement.

What should you know before you go?

The River Walk is not one place. The downtown loop is the busy horseshoe of restaurants and riverboats. The Museum Reach runs north from it to Pearl. Where your hotel sits on that geography matters more than its star rating, because it decides whether you step out of the lobby into the noise or a ten minute walk from it.

Hotel Street Distance to the water Rooms Best for
Hotel Emma 136 E Grayson St On the Museum Reach, a mile north 146 The best stay in the city
Hotel Valencia 150 E Houston St On the downtown loop Not published A balcony over the river
Hotel Contessa 306 W Market St On the downtown loop All suites Families, longer stays
Drury Plaza 105 S St Mary's St Adjacent 368 Value, free meals
The Menger 204 Alamo Plaza Two minutes via Rivercenter 316 History, the Alamo at dawn
The Crockett 320 Bonham St About four minutes 138 Mid-range by the Alamo
The Emily Morgan 705 E Houston St Three blocks Not published An Alamo view

Two practical points. First, parking downtown is a real line in the budget, so if you can stay within walking distance of everything, do, and leave the car in one garage for the whole trip. Second, the convention centre calendar drives rates on the downtown loop more than the season does. If a large show is in town, the Pearl end and the Alamo Plaza hotels usually hold their prices better than the riverside ones.

Is Hotel Emma worth being a mile off the loop?

If the trip is about the city rather than the river, yes. Pearl is where San Antonio eats now, the hotel's own three rooms for food and drink are better than anything in a downtown hotel, and the Museum Reach walkway gets you to the loop on foot in about half an hour or by riverboat without walking at all.

If the trip is three nights with children who want to be on the water, no. Book the Contessa or the Drury, which put you in the middle of it, and come up to Pearl for one dinner.

What should you do next?

Decide which River Walk you want first, then pick from the table. Downtown loop and on the water means Valencia or Contessa. Downtown loop and watching the budget means the Drury Plaza. The Alamo at seven in the morning before the crowds means the Menger. The best room in San Antonio means Hotel Emma, and a mile of walkway between you and the loop.

Then plan the eating, because River Walk restaurants are the weakest part of the district. Our guide to the best Mexican food on the South Side of San Antonio goes where locals actually eat, and the best things to do in San Antonio besides the River Walk is the itinerary for the second and third days. Everything we have published on the city sits on the San Antonio city guide, and places to stay across Texas are collected under hotels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Of the seven here, Hotel Valencia, Hotel Contessa and the Drury Plaza are on or immediately adjacent to the downtown loop. Hotel Emma is on the Museum Reach, the northern extension, about a mile from the Alamo. The Menger, the Crockett and the Emily Morgan are Alamo Plaza hotels two to three blocks from the water. Everything within a few blocks markets itself as on the River Walk, so check the street address against a map before you book.

The downtown loop is the horseshoe of restaurants, bars and riverboats most visitors picture, lined with hotels and running past Rivercenter and La Villita. The Museum Reach runs north from downtown past the San Antonio Museum of Art to Pearl, where Hotel Emma is. It is quieter, greener and has far fewer people on it. You can walk between them in half an hour.

Hotel Contessa, because every room is a suite with a separate sitting area, or the Drury Plaza, because the free hot breakfast and the nightly 5.30 Kickback with hot food cut two meals a day out of a River Walk budget. The Drury's 22nd floor rooftop pool is also the better pool for children.

No, and parking downtown is expensive enough that it is worth planning around. All seven hotels here are within walking distance of the Alamo, the river and the convention centre. Hotel Emma is the only one where you are a mile out, and the Museum Reach walkway connects it to downtown on foot or by riverboat.

Because we could not read their own websites. Mokara Hotel and Spa, Omni La Mansion del Rio, the Westin Riverwalk and the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk are all real, well-regarded riverside hotels, and all four of their official sites refused to serve us pages while we were researching this. We will not publish an address, a phone number or a room count copied off a booking marketplace, so they are not here. That is a limitation of this article, not a judgment on those hotels.
