How did we pick these?
We started from a simple filter: does this kitchen actually cook a burger, and can we confirm it is open right now. That knocked out most of what the aggregators return. Search "best burgers in Sulphur Springs" and you get a list where half the entries are the chains out by the Interstate 30 exits and one is a food truck park in Bonham, seventy miles northwest in Fannin County.
What is left is eight kitchens, and only two of them are burger specialists. So we ranked on how much of the kitchen's attention the burger actually gets, then on what we could verify. Places that grind or press their own beef and cut their own fries came first. Places where the burger is one line on a broader menu came after.
There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. Nothing in our client file matches Sulphur Springs and burgers, so nothing was pre-filled and nothing was cut for a relationship.
We cut Big Smith's Bar-B-Q, which does list a hamburger, because it is a barbecue and catfish house. We cut every chain. And we published no prices at all, because not one of these eight posts a price list anywhere we could check it, and the figures floating around on delivery apps are not the same as the figures on the wall.
What happened to Burgerland and Flip's?
If you are looking for a place at 210 Main Street, you are looking for one restaurant with three names attached to it. It opened in March 2017 as Burgerland, a second location of the Burgerland counter on North Main in Paris, which is still the best burger in Paris, Texas. KSST Radio covered the opening. The business later sold, traded for a while as Flip's Burgerland, and the city tourism board now lists it as The Stadium at Burgerland.
Yelp has not caught up and still files it under Flip's. All three names, one address, one phone number, one griddle. We list it under the name the tourism board currently uses.
What should you know before you go?
Sulphur Springs closes early. Six of these eight stop serving by 8 or 9 p.m., and two of them stop at 2 in the afternoon. Plan around the clock, not around the menu.

Parking is free on and around the square, and four of these eight are within one block of each other on Main and Gilmer, so a walk between them is short. If you are coming off I-30, the square is about a mile and a half south of the exits, past the chains.
What should you do next?
Go to Burgers & Fries on College Street, on a weekday, before six. Order a patty melt and the fries. That is the whole recommendation, and it costs less than lunch at any of the chains you passed on the way in.
