The Best Dance Halls in Texas

Nine Texas dance halls verified booking live music in October 2026 and ranked, with addresses, lesson nights, and the two famous halls that have closed.

The Short Answer

Gruene Hall, built in 1878 outside New Braunfels, is the best dance hall in Texas and the oldest one still operating. The Broken Spoke in Austin is the best place to learn to two-step, Floore's Country Store in Helotes is where Willie Nelson got started, and Billy Bob's in Fort Worth is the largest honky tonk in the world.

Gruene Hall

Gruene Historic District, New Braunfels · $

Known for Being the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas, since 1878

Built in 1878 and never substantially remodelled, which is the whole point. Gruene Hall is 6,000 square feet under a high pitched tin roof, with the original layout still intact: bar at the front, small lit stage at the back, hinged side flaps that open the room to the air, and a garden out back. The floor is worn into the shape of a century of dancing.

It also books better than venues ten times its size. October 2026 alone carries Robert Earl Keen, Shane Smith and the Saints, Jamey Johnson, the SteelDrivers and the Josh Abbott Band. The thing nobody tells you is that afternoon sets and many weeknight shows carry no cover at all, so the best dance hall in Texas is frequently free to walk into.

Go-to order or tip: Come for an afternoon set on a weekday. Same room, same floor, no cover and no crush, and you can actually dance rather than stand. Cash moves faster at the bar.

Hours
Opens late morning daily, with later closing Friday and Saturday

The Broken Spoke

South Lamar, Austin · $$

Known for Teaching more Texans to two-step than anywhere else in the state

James and Annetta White opened the Spoke in November 1964 and the family still runs it. It survived South Lamar turning into a corridor of apartment blocks, it is now a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark as of April 2023, and the low ceilinged back room is still the best place in Texas to learn the two-step properly. Lessons run Wednesday through Saturday from 8 to 9 p.m., taught by Terri White.

The wall of history is not marketing. Willie Nelson, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Kris Kristofferson and Sturgill Simpson have all played the room, and the historical marker reaches further back to Bob Wills, Roy Acuff and Ernest Tubb. The Tourist Trap room at the front holds the hats and photographs that prove it.

Go-to order or tip: Take the 8 p.m. lesson even if you think you know how. An hour of instruction before the band starts is the difference between watching and dancing, and it is the cheapest thing on the bill.

Hours
Tuesday to Saturday from 4 p.m., dance hall doors at 7.15 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday

Floore's Country Store

Old Bandera Road, Helotes, northwest of San Antonio · $$

Known for The room Willie Nelson calls his musical birthplace, open since 1942

John T. Floore opened this in 1942, and by the 1950s Ray Price, Bob Wills, Johnny Cash and Ernest Tubb were playing the slab out back. Then Floore went into business with the Willie Nelson Music Company on terms that required Nelson to play here once a month, which is why the store calls itself his musical birthplace and why he named Floore in the lyrics of "Shotgun Willie." It went on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

The booking has not coasted on that. The 2026 calendar runs through December with Kaitlin Butts, Austin Meade, William Beckmann and Josh Meloy, and the outdoor stage handles the bigger nights. The Sunday dine and dance is the one to know about, with free dance lessons from 3 p.m. and no ticket needed.

Go-to order or tip: Sunday afternoon is the best value in Texas live music. Free lessons at three, a band after, and a crowd that spans about sixty years of age range.

Hours
Shows Thursday to Saturday, with a Sunday afternoon dine and dance

Luckenbach Dance Hall

Luckenbach, 13 miles southeast of Fredericksburg · $

Known for Picker circles under the oaks, with a real dance hall behind them

Luckenbach is a general store, a bar and a dance hall on a town loop with a population you could fit in a van, and its own sign dates the music back to 1849. Most days the action is not in the hall at all. It is the picker circle at the tables behind the store, where anybody with a guitar sits in and nobody takes a ticket.

The dance hall itself is where the booked shows and the bigger weekend nights happen, and the ticketed calendar runs year round. The reason it ranks here rather than higher is that the hall is the second act in its own town. Go for the circle, stay for whatever is in the hall.

Go-to order or tip: Afternoons are the real Luckenbach. Arrive by two on a weekday, buy a beer at the store, and sit down at the tables. Cell service is poor, which is part of the appeal.

Hours
Daily from 9 a.m., until 10.30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 or 9 p.m. the rest of the week

Billy Bob's Texas

Fort Worth Stockyards · $$

Known for 100,000 square feet, an indoor bull riding arena, and the world's largest honky tonk claim

Opened on April 1, 1981 in a former cattle barn, and nothing else in the genre is at this scale. There are 100,000 square feet of interior, nearly 20 acres of parking, a capacity above 6,000, dozens of bar stations, a Wall of Fame of celebrity handprints, and a small dirt arena where professional bull riding runs on weekend concert nights. It draws over 50,000 visitors a month.

Treat it as a different category from the wooden halls on this list, because it is. The dance floor is large and the two-step crowd is real, but the room is built around a concert stage, and the 2026 calendar reads accordingly, with Miranda Lambert, Ashley McBryde, Blackberry Smoke and Brett Young booked through December.

Go-to order or tip: Buy the concert ticket separately from general admission and check whether bull riding runs that night, because that is what separates a Saturday here from a Tuesday.

Hours
Open daily. Closes early Monday, late Tuesday through Saturday, 8 p.m. Sunday

Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar Saloon

Main Street, Bandera · $

Known for A sawdust floored basement bar the county calls the oldest honky tonk in Texas

Down a short flight of stairs off Main Street in Bandera, under a low ceiling, with sawdust on the floor and a dance space that holds maybe forty people comfortably. The Bandera Convention and Visitors Bureau describes it as the oldest continuously operating honky tonk in Texas, running first as the Fox Hole and then as Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar.

What makes it worth the drive is that Arkey Blue still plays it himself on Saturday nights at eight, with live music Thursday through Sunday the rest of the week. This is the smallest room on the list and the only one where the band is close enough to talk to between songs.

Go-to order or tip: Saturday at eight for Arkey Blue himself. Bring cash, expect it to be tight, and understand that the famous carved tabletop is genuinely the furniture rather than an exhibit.

Hours
Live music Thursday through Sunday. Open late the rest of the week

Stagecoach Ballroom

East Belknap Street, Fort Worth · $

Known for A 3,500 square foot floor and the most serious social dancers in North Texas

Ray Chaney opened the first Stagecoach in October 1961 and moved it twice, landing in a former Safeway on East Belknap in 1967 after the previous building burned. Bruno Czajkowski and Milton Trojacek took it over around 1974 and renamed it the Stagecoach Ballroom, and Jean and Kiran have owned it since 1999. Willie Nelson, Bob Wills, Porter Wagoner, Loretta Lynn and Charley Pride all played it.

It is on this list for the floor and the schedule rather than the booking. More than 3,500 square feet of dance floor, one of the longest bars in Fort Worth, and a weekly pattern built around dancers: Friday evening with beginner and intermediate lessons before the music, Saturday night with a live band, and a Sunday afternoon session with lessons and a house band. Call ahead, because the website has been intermittent.

Go-to order or tip: Sunday afternoon is the most welcoming slot for a beginner, with lessons first and a long happy hour. This is a dance room, not a drinking room, and the regulars will put you right if you ask.

Hours
Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons, with lessons before the band

Coupland Dancehall

Hoxie Street, Coupland, 30 miles northeast of Austin · $$

Known for A 500 capacity country hall that came back from the dead in late 2025

The newest story on an old list. Coupland's hall sat as one of those sacred and underused Texas rooms for years before reopening in November 2025 under new management, with upgraded sound and lighting and the small town room left alone. Capacity is about 500, which is the sweet spot between a bar and an arena.

The booking since reopening is the proof it took. The calendar runs from autumn 2026 into spring 2027 with Wade Bowen, Chayce Beckham, Stoney LaRue, Micky and the Motorcars and the Bellamy Brothers. For anybody in Austin, this is a thirty mile drive to see acts that would play a room four times the size in town.

Go-to order or tip: Check the calendar before you drive out, because this hall opens on show nights rather than every evening. Most shows run early, with doors around six.

Hours
Show nights on selected Fridays and Saturdays. Not open daily

Twin Sisters Dance Hall

Highway 281, six miles south of Blanco · $

Known for A hardwood floored German immigrant hall from the 1870s, open to the public once a month

German settlers built this hall in the 1870s, and it is one of the oldest continuously operating dance halls in the state. Sources put the build at 1870 and at 1879, so take the decade rather than the year. The room is what you want it to be: a hardwood floor, a stage, lights strung overhead, and a bar selling beer, wine and snacks.

The reason it is last here is purely access. Twin Sisters earns most of its keep as a private event space, and the public dances run on the first Saturday of the month and no other night. Get the date right and it is one of the best rooms in the Hill Country. Get it wrong and you are looking at a locked building beside Highway 281.

Go-to order or tip: First Saturday only, and check the hall's calendar for the band before you commit. This is a community hall, so it runs earlier and more family friendly than a honky tonk.

Hours
Public dances on the first Saturday of every month

How did we pick these?

One test above all the others. Is this hall booking live music right now? Every entry was checked against the venue's own calendar on the day we published, and all nine have shows on the books for late 2026. That sounds like a low bar. It is not, and the next section explains why.

After that we ranked on the room rather than the marquee. Age and authenticity, meaning an original building with an original floor. Whether a beginner can walk in and actually dance, which is why the halls that teach rank above the halls that only book. And whether the place is open often enough to plan around, which is why Twin Sisters is ninth rather than third.

Facts came from the halls themselves, from the Bandera Convention and Visitors Bureau for Arkey Blue's, and from National Register and National Trust records for the history. Where sources disagree we said so rather than picking. Twin Sisters is dated to 1870 by one source and 1879 by another, so the card says the 1870s. No partners, clients or sponsored listings appear in this article, and new-post.js matched none. Nobody paid for a place here.

Which famous Texas dance halls have already closed?

This is why "currently booking" is the first test. The National Trust puts the count at roughly 1,000 dance halls built in Texas between the mid nineteenth and mid twentieth centuries, with about 400 still standing and a quarter of those at real risk. Two of the most recommended names in the genre are already gone, and plenty of lists have not caught up.

Schroeder Hall, Goliad County. Widely called the second oldest dance hall in Texas, with music going back to 1890 and the current building dating to 1935. In November 2022 the owners said it would stop booking live music after the New Year's Eve show, having lost money for over a decade in an area that no longer supported a venue like it. It closed on May 6, 2024.

Sengelmann Hall, Schulenburg. Restored in 2009, on the National Register, and for thirteen years the best reason to stop in Schulenburg. It closed on January 31, 2025 when the tenant's run ended and the owner put the building up for sale. It still stands, and is still listed.

Hall Status What happened
Schroeder Hall, Goliad County Permanently closed Stopped live music after 2022, closed May 2024
Sengelmann Hall, Schulenburg Closed, building for sale Tenant's lease ended January 2025
Gruene Hall, New Braunfels Open, booking through 2026 Nothing, and long may that continue

If you have a hall you love, turn up on an ordinary Thursday rather than only for the big names. Both closures above cited the ordinary nights, not the sold out ones.

What should you know before you go?

Three practical things. Dance halls do not keep restaurant hours. Twin Sisters opens for one Saturday a month. Coupland opens on show nights. Arkey Blue's and the Stagecoach have live music Thursday to Sunday and Friday to Sunday respectively. Only Gruene Hall and Luckenbach are reliably open on an ordinary weekday afternoon, which is a large part of why they rank where they do.

Hall When to go Lessons
Gruene Hall Any afternoon, often no cover No
The Broken Spoke Tuesday to Saturday, doors 7.15 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 8 to 9 p.m.
Floore's Sunday afternoon, free Sunday from 3 p.m., free
Luckenbach Weekday afternoon for the picker circle No
Billy Bob's Weekend concert nights No
Arkey Blue's Saturday 8 p.m. for Arkey Blue No
Stagecoach Ballroom Sunday afternoon or Friday evening Friday and Sunday, both levels
Coupland Show nights only, doors around 6 p.m. No
Twin Sisters First Saturday of the month No

Second, bring cash, because a card reader is not guaranteed at the smaller halls. Third, there is no dress code. Nobody in these nine rooms cares what you are wearing, and the regulars who dance best are usually the ones in work clothes.

What should you do next?

Pick by what you want out of the night. If you want to learn, it is the Broken Spoke on a Wednesday or the Stagecoach on a Sunday, and an hour of lessons makes the rest of the evening a different experience. If you want the room itself, go to Gruene Hall on a weekday afternoon when it is free and empty, then read our full guide to Gruene Hall and the historic district around it.

If you are building a weekend rather than a night out, the Hill Country halls cluster usefully. Luckenbach is 13 miles from Fredericksburg, Twin Sisters is south of Blanco on the same highway, and Arkey Blue's anchors Bandera, one of the best small towns in Texas to visit. For more live music, our Denton venue guide covers the North Texas side, and the dance halls hub and the Texas guides collect the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gruene Hall, built in 1878 outside New Braunfels, which bills itself as the oldest continually operating dance hall in the state and is not seriously contested on it. Twin Sisters near Blanco dates to the 1870s as well and is among the oldest still running. Arkey Blue's in Bandera is described by its county visitors bureau as the oldest continuously operating honky tonk, which is a different claim about a different kind of room.

No, and two halls on this list will teach you. The Broken Spoke runs lessons Wednesday through Saturday from 8 to 9 p.m., and the Stagecoach Ballroom runs beginner and intermediate lessons before the music on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Floore's gives free lessons from 3 p.m. on its Sunday dine and dance.

Less than you would guess. Gruene Hall's afternoon and many weeknight sets carry no cover at all, Floore's Sunday dine and dance is free, and the smaller halls charge a few dollars when they charge anything. Ticketed shows by touring acts are where the money goes, and those run from about $20 to well over $100 at Billy Bob's.

Gruene Hall on a weekday afternoon, because there is no cover, no crowd and nothing between you and the room. If you want a lesson and a band the same night, make it the Broken Spoke in Austin at 8 p.m. If you are starting from San Antonio, Floore's on a Sunday.

Most of the older halls are, and always have been. These rooms were built by German, Czech, Polish and Tejano communities as places where whole families gathered, and halls like Twin Sisters and Gruene still run that way, particularly in the afternoon. The late night honky tonks are a different matter, so check the age policy for an evening show.

Around 400, out of roughly 1,000 built between the mid nineteenth and mid twentieth centuries, according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. About a quarter of those still standing are at real risk from deterioration, fire or vandalism. Texas Dance Hall Preservation, an Austin nonprofit, makes restoration grants to owners.
