How did we pick these?
Winnsboro had 3,455 residents at the 2020 census, which means the honest version of this list is short and specific rather than padded. We started from the town's own institutions, the Winnsboro Center for the Arts, the Winnsboro EDC, the historical museum and the city, then cross checked against the Texas Commission on the Arts designation, the Texas Historical Commission's Atlas record for the depot, Texas Water Development Board and Texas Parks and Wildlife data for the lake, and coverage in Texas Highways, KETK and the Gilmer Mirror.
We cut two things that show up high in search results. Crossroads Music Company and Listening Room was for years the reason music people drove to Winnsboro, and it is still all over the travel listings, but it no longer operates as a live music venue. Liefie Li Vine, the South African bistro that got written up as the town's quirkiest table, carries a closed marker. Neither belongs on a list of things you can actually go do this weekend. We also left specific opening times off the brewery entry, because its own calendar and the directory listings do not agree and the taproom itself says closing time is flexible.
There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. new-post.js matched nothing in Winnsboro for this category, so every pick here is an ordinary editorial call.
What should you know before you go?
The whole town runs on a Thursday to Saturday rhythm. The museum is only open those three days, the market is Saturday morning, the brewery skews to Friday and Saturday evenings, and Main Street is largely closed on Sunday. Build the trip around a Saturday and you get almost everything; show up on a Tuesday and you get murals and a lake.
Parking downtown is free and on street, and the district is about nine blocks, so you park once and walk. Two of the picks here are month or weekend specific, which is worth knowing before you commit.
| Annual event | When | Cost | What it is |
| Autumn Trails | All of October, since 1958 | Free to $$ by event | Trail rides, two parades, mule rodeo, tractor pull, trade days |
| Winnsboro Cowboy Music and Poetry Gathering | Late September, on the Bowery | Ticketed day passes | Two days of cowboy poetry, western music and storytelling |
| Winnsboro Art and Wine Festival | November 6 and 7, 2026 | Free admission | 60 plus juried artists, a dozen regional wineries, food and live music |
| Texas Street Art Festival and Wood County Walls | Since September 2023 | Free | New murals painted across all six Wood County towns |
What about the rest of Wood and Franklin counties?
Winnsboro is small enough that a full weekend usually means pairing it with a neighbor. Mount Pleasant is the closest town with a comparable day's worth of attractions, and our guide to the best things to do in Mount Pleasant covers the free warbird hangars and Lake Bob Sandlin State Park. Pittsburg is a shorter hop east if you are mainly eating, and the best restaurants in Pittsburg is the list for that. Everything we have published in this town collects on the Winnsboro city page, and the best things to do in Texas hub sorts the same category across every city we cover.
The mural trail is genuinely regional. Wood County Walls runs through Mineola, Quitman, Hawkins, Yantis and Alba as well as Winnsboro, so if painted walls are your reason for the drive, treat Winnsboro as the densest stop on a longer loop rather than the whole trip.
What should you do next?
Pick a Saturday in October. Get to the farmers market by eight, walk the mural map and the Bowery while the shops are open, take the depot museum before it closes at four, and put whichever Autumn Trails event falls that weekend in the middle of the day. Finish at the Bowery Stage if there is a show, or at Cypress Creek if there is not.
If October will not work, aim for November 6 or 7 and the Art and Wine Festival, which is free to walk into and puts 60 plus artists and a dozen Texas wineries on the same nine blocks. Any other weekend, check the Winnsboro Center for the Arts calendar first and let the show decide the date.
