The Best Things to Do in Winnsboro, Texas

This is the reason people from Dallas and Tyler point their cars at Winnsboro. The Center anchors the cultural arts district the Texas Commission on the Arts designated in 2008, and it programs concerts, theater, classes and rotating exhibits year round. Texas Highways described Winnsboro as the smallest of the towns carrying that designation.

The Bowery Stage is the part musicians talk about. It seats 88, the format is usually two 45 minute sets with an intermission long enough to actually meet the performer, and the bookings run to singer songwriters, folk, jazz and blues. There is an open mic once a month. The Center broke ground on a two story, 10,000 square foot Creative Learning Center in the fall of 2024 and cut the ribbon on it in April 2026, adding a children's art room, ceramics and glassworks studios, more teaching rooms for music students, and a second floor multipurpose space. Six exhibitions are scheduled for 2026, including a juried show and a juried student competition.

Market Street picked up the name the Bowery around 1900, when the alley north of the depot ran to saloons, gambling halls and bath houses serving the logging crews. The Winnsboro Economic Development Corporation now uses the name for the walkable entertainment block downtown, string lights and all, and it is the densest few hundred yards in town for shops, food and live music.

The murals came later and came fast. Wood County Walls formed in September 2022 as a joint project between the county EDC and the economic development groups in Mineola, Winnsboro, Quitman, Hawkins, Yantis and Alba, and it launched the first Texas Street Art Festival the week of September 16 to 23, 2023, bringing in artists from Miami, Denver and Michigan alongside local painters. The Winnsboro EDC publishes a mural map, which is the practical way to see them without wandering.

A handful of friends rode out on horseback one October morning in 1958 to see the fall color, and the ride turned into the thing the town is known for. Autumn Trails now fills the whole month with an antique tractor pull, a 5K, the Miss Autumn Trails pageant, campouts and trail rides, a 42 tournament, cake and pie contests, a barrel race and mule rodeo, a barn dance, trade days, arts and crafts, and two separate parades.

Two dates anchor it. The trail ride and welcome parade land on the third weekend in October, and the old car parade is always the fourth Saturday, forming up at the railroad tracks about two and a half miles west of town and reaching downtown around 10:15 in the morning. Sources disagree on how many consecutive years the festival has run, so we are not putting a number on it. What is documented is 1958 and the fact that it has never stopped.

The building is the exhibit. The first Winnsboro depot went up in 1878 as a western style wood structure, burned in 1907, and was rebuilt in 1908 by the Katy system with a stucco over concrete base. Three passenger trains stopped here at noon each day in the early 1900s, which tells you most of what you need to know about why the town has the downtown it has.

The Heritage Society runs the museum inside it and the town still uses the depot for meetings and events. Admission is free with donations accepted, and private tours for groups, students and homeschool families can be arranged by phone or email. It is a thirty to forty minute stop, not an afternoon, and it pairs naturally with the mural walk.

This is a producer only market, which is the distinction that matters. Vendors sell what they grow or make rather than reselling wholesale produce, so the tables change with what is actually coming out of the ground in Wood and Franklin counties that week.

The market keeps two rhythms. April through October it runs every Saturday morning and spills onto Market Street; November through March it drops to a single winter market on the second Saturday at the Carnegie Street pavilions. Vendor lineups are posted week to week rather than fixed, so the market's own social feed is the only reliable guide to who will be there.

A family owned and veteran owned nano brewery, founded in February 2017 and open to the public since August 2018. It is the only place in Winnsboro brewing its own beer, and the taproom is a short walk from the Bowery, which makes it the natural bookend to a night at the Bowery Stage.

The outdoor yard opens in decent weather with cornhole and room to sit. Listed hours differ between the brewery's own calendar and the directory listings, and the taproom has told customers its closing time is flexible, so treat any posted schedule as a starting point.

Winnsboro has several antique dealers on and around Main, and this is the anchor. Main Street Antiques grew into the neighboring Beauweevil's, an interior entrance was cut between them, and the two now trade as a single business spanning both storefronts. The stock runs from vintage furnishings and primitives through farmhouse and mid century pieces to clothing and small collectibles.

Directory listings split the address between 205 and 207 North Main because it is literally both buildings. There is a shop cat named Weevil. Amaryllis Antiques at 310 N Main is the other stop worth making if you are working the street properly.

Wood County owns and operates this one for flood control and recreation. The dam, a 2,500 foot rolled earthfill, went in between June 1961 and September 1962, and the lake started filling in July 1962. At the service spillway crest it covers 806 acres and holds about 8,100 acre feet.

Texas Parks and Wildlife has published repeated survey reports on it, and the fishery they describe is largemouth bass, white and black crappie, and channel catfish. It is a small, uncrowded lake rather than a destination reservoir, which is the point. Lake Fork, the reservoir that actually draws tournament anglers, is a separate drive south and west.

The city park on Wheeler Drive is the everyday green space, and the City of Winnsboro also runs its recreation vehicle pads here. The sites have concrete pads with water and electric, shared picnic tables and barbecue pits, restrooms with hot showers, and a dump station.

What makes it useful to a visitor is the location. You can park an RV here and walk or take a two minute drive to the Bowery, which is not true of the lake campgrounds outside town. Reservations and current rates come from city hall rather than a booking site.
