The Best Restaurants in Athens, Texas

This is the Athens meal people drive in for. The winery grows and makes its own wine on the property, and the food side runs on three rooms, the original tasting room, the Cellar Door for sit-down dining, and a wine bar. Plates are built for sharing and change around what the kitchen has, and the grill fires up on the weekend.

Fort Worth Magazine put it in its Athens travel piece, and the property also runs the Tara Inn in an 1880s house, so this is the one place in the county where dinner, a bottle and a bed are the same booking. Same-day tables move fast on Friday and Saturday.

Open since June 2017 at the Lake Athens Marina, and still the only restaurant in the county where the water is the reason you came. Mississippi raised catfish, Texas Gulf shrimp, hand built burgers and grilled steaks, plus a bar that gets the boat traffic in the late afternoon.

It works as two rooms in one. The dining side is family casual and busy at dinner, the bar side fills with people who have been fishing since dawn. Sunday is the short day, open for the middle of the day only.

An independent family shop cooking over a wood pit rather than a gas rotisserie, which is the whole difference in East Texas barbecue. The sausage is brought in from Rudolph's Market and Sausage Factory in Dallas and runs drier and more peppery than the sausage most Texas joints serve.

Danny's says, and the city's own visitor listing repeats, that Athens Daily Review readers voted it best barbecue in 2019. It is a counter operation with a dining room, not a destination smokehouse, and it is the single most consistently named restaurant in town.

Opened in 1990 as a small lunchroom in a refurbished 1920s house and now past three decades in the same spot. The bakery came later, bought as a going concern in 1997 and folded into the same building in 2002, which is why one address gives you lunch and a decorated cake.

This is the Athens lunch. Soups, sandwiches and salads change daily, the catering side handles most of the town's parties, and the kitchen takes dietary requests with notice. It is the room a local picks when they want to sit somewhere pleasant on a weekday.

A family run kitchen built on family recipes, in the storefront that traded as El Arroyo Modern Mexican Kitchen before the current owners renamed it. The birria is the order, and unusually for a small East Texas taqueria the vegetarian side of the menu is real rather than an afterthought, including nachos built without cheese.

The catch is the schedule. Neza keeps a strict weekday week and is dark both weekend days, which is exactly when most visitors go looking for it. Plan it as a Tuesday lunch, not a Saturday dinner.

The same family has been feeding Athens for more than 25 years, first as Michoacano and then as the Texas Cafe, whose building was damaged by fire. Chely's opened at 801 North Prairieville with a grand opening on 31 July 2025, and the Athens Review covered it as a new name on an old kitchen rather than a new restaurant.

The menu is what that team has always cooked. Breakfast plates, pancakes, omelets and burritos next to huevos rancheros and chilaquiles, then Tex-Mex and American comfort plates through lunch and dinner. It is the earliest opening kitchen on this list.

Family owned and operated for more than 25 years, and the only kitchen in Athens doing Italian at any depth. Thin crust pizza is the volume seller, but the menu runs through pastas, chicken and veal, steak and seafood, and there is a full bar with wine, beer and mixed drinks.

It is also the most forgiving schedule in town for visitors. Six days a week from late morning straight through dinner, including Sunday, when much of Athens is shut. They take reservations for groups.

A small family run kitchen making its own corn tortillas, which is the reason to choose it over anywhere else in town for a breakfast taco. Breakfast plates run from opening until late morning, then the menu moves to tacos, enchiladas and the rest of the scratch made list.

It is the least polished room on this list and the one locals send you to anyway. The phone line has gone down before and the shop has posted an alternate number on Facebook, so check there if nobody picks up.

Athens does not have much that is open between the lunch kitchens closing and the dinner rooms filling. Callaway's covers that gap seven days a week, from before seven in the morning until the evening, with espresso drinks, a Mexican mocha built with jalapeno, sandwiches, salads, bagels and a bakery case.

The burger is named the Uncle Fletch after Fletcher Davis, the Athens cook the Texas Legislature credited with the hamburger in a 2007 resolution. It is the one place in town where you can order the local legend on an ordinary Tuesday.

The buffet is the point, and it runs on weekend mornings only, which makes this the default Saturday breakfast in a town where the good lunch kitchens are closed. The rest of the week it works as an all-day cafe with made to order omelets and daily lunch specials.

Chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy are what recent reviewers keep naming. Do not expect anything ambitious. Expect a big plate, early, seven days a week.
