The Best Restaurants in Tyler, Texas

Chef Lance McWhorter relaunched the room as Heritage East in the fall of 2024, after it had spent several years as Culture ETX. The rebrand came with a menu built specifically around the food of East Texas rather than around a generic New American template, which is what makes it worth the drive from anywhere in the region.

McWhorter has been featured on Food Network, and the restaurant has drawn write-ups from Texas Highways and the Dallas Observer since the relaunch. That is more outside attention than any other kitchen in Smith County currently has.

Pierre de Wet, a South African who came to Texas by way of farm work in California, hand-planted the first vines here with his daughters in 1998 and 1999. The vineyard now runs to about 63 acres of European and native Texas grapes, and the steakhouse, winery, distillery and bed and breakfast all sit on the same land.

You are eating a Prime steak with a glass of wine made a few hundred yards away. Very few restaurants in Texas can say that honestly, and it is the reason this one outranks everything else in the county on a special occasion.

The dining room is the former People's National Bank lobby inside the People's Petroleum Building, an Art Deco tower that is the tallest thing on the Tyler skyline. The space was Jack Ryan's Steak and Chophouse until that restaurant closed, and Prime 102 took it over in 2021.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph covered the restaurant's fifth year in February 2026, which is a useful signal in a category where downtown steakhouses often do not last three. The menu leans on aged beef, seafood and a cocktail program.

Nick and Jen Pencis took over in 2006 and turned a long-running neighborhood pit into the one East Texas joint that Texas Monthly kept coming back to. It made the magazine's Top 50 in 2021 as the only East Texas representative on that list, and landed in the Next 50 in the 2025 edition.

It is also in the Texas Historical Commission's Texas Time Travel directory, and it serves breakfast on weekday mornings, which almost no barbecue joint does.

Opened in 2016 on a historic farm property, The Grove built its dining rooms around a greenhouse and a set of planted gardens, with a bar and patio attached. The setting does a lot of the work, but the kitchen under head chef Arturo Lara backs it up with a genuinely seasonal menu.

It is the strongest weekend brunch in Tyler and the easiest recommendation in town for a group that cannot agree on a cuisine.

Open since 2007, Villa Montez runs Latin American and Mexican dishes through a restaurant built into an old mansion on a hill, with a main floor bar, upstairs private rooms and a terrace, plus a basement space the restaurant calls The Cave.

It has been a local fixture long enough that KLTV was reviewing it more than a decade ago. Dinner is the only service, so it is an evening plan and not a lunch one.

Family owned and running for more than twenty years, Bernard is the fine dining option in Tyler that is not a steakhouse. The menu moves across the Mediterranean rather than sitting in one country, and the kitchen runs off-menu dishes daily.

The wine list is the real draw and covers both North American and European bottles at a depth you would expect in a much larger market.

The Don Juan family has run Mexican restaurants in Tyler across more than one address, and the square location is the one that matters if you are downtown. It is a short walk from Heritage East and Rick's, which makes the square a genuine dining district rather than a single destination.

Texas Monthly carries it in its restaurant directory. It is not fine dining and does not pretend to be.

Rick's has been on the square since 1992, running scratch-made Southern food, steaks, seafood and a cocktail bar across a building of more than 20,000 square feet with private rooms that hold up to 200 people. Live music runs on the patio Thursday through Saturday.

It changed hands in January 2026, when Dewayne Byars took over, and the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported he intends to keep the format intact. We are ranking it on thirty years of record rather than on the new owner's first season, which is worth knowing before you go.

Loggins has been feeding East Texas since 1949, and the Tyler Morning Telegraph marked its 76th year in February 2025. The format has not changed much. It is a buffet of chicken fried steak, fried chicken, fried catfish and vegetables, followed by pie.

It ranks last here only because it is a different kind of visit from everything above it. As a lunch, on a weekday, for under fifteen dollars, nothing in Tyler beats it.
