The Short Answer

Encina at 614 W Davis is the best brunch in Bishop Arts, served Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. only, so book it. Written by the Seasons on Melba is the other weekend table worth planning around. Oddfellows opens at 7 a.m. every day and takes no reservations, which makes it the one that always works.

Encina

Bishop Arts, in the old Bolsa space on West Davis · $$$

Known for Blue corn pancakes with cajeta, and a burger you can only order at brunch

Encina is chef owner Matt Balke's restaurant, opened in October 2020 in the building Bolsa occupied for years, where Balke had been executive chef for four of them. He runs it with co-owner Corey McCombs. The name is the Spanish word for holm oak, which was the original name of Balke's hometown of Uvalde, and the cooking is New American with Texas, California and Southern pulls rather than one fixed cuisine.

The dish to know is the blue corn pancake with cajeta. PaperCity reports it got well known enough that the mix is now sold at H-E-B, which is a fair measure of how far one brunch plate can travel. Note the shape of the week before you plan anything. Brunch exists on Saturday and Sunday only, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the kitchen is closed Monday and Tuesday, and the burger is a brunch-only item.

Go-to order or tip: Book a week out for Sunday. If you want the burger, this is the only service that has it, so do not save it for a dinner visit.

Hours
Brunch Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner Wednesday to Saturday. Closed Monday and Tuesday

Written by the Seasons

Bishop Arts, on Melba between North Bishop and North Madison · $$$

Known for Produce-forward cooking and the most ambitious weekend menu on the block

This is the other Bishop Arts room worth building a weekend around. It opened in 2021 and the Dallas Observer describes it as Michelin recognized, which puts it in rarer company than anything else on this list. The kitchen is seasonal American with a light Asian accent, and the dishes that stay on year round are a focaccia, a wild mushroom plate and a grilled shrimp and avocado salad. The house approach is sharing rather than one plate each.

Two practical notes. It takes bookings through Resy, which is the sensible way in on a Saturday. And it is the same ownership as Tribal All Day Cafe further down this list, so if you cannot get a table here, the cheaper sibling is a two-minute walk away.

Go-to order or tip: Ask what came in that week rather than ordering off memory, because the menu turns over with the season and the focaccia is the thing to start with either way.

Hours
Brunch Saturday and Sunday. Dinner Monday to Thursday. Lunch and dinner Friday

Oddfellows

Bishop Arts, on West Seventh off North Bishop · $$

Known for Being open at 7 a.m. seven days a week, with no reservation to get

Oddfellows is the answer to the problem that makes brunch here awkward. The two best kitchens in Bishop Arts serve weekend mornings only and both want a booking. Oddfellows opens at 7 a.m. every single day, runs a daytime menu straight through, and states plainly on its own site that it does not take reservations for brunch.

That combination makes it the default rather than the compromise. If you are in the district on a Tuesday morning, if you did not plan ahead, or if you are a group of six that nobody will seat, this is the room. The trade is the queue, which is real on a weekend late morning and worth dodging rather than enduring.

Go-to order or tip: Go before 10 a.m. or after 1.30 p.m. on a Saturday. The same kitchen, a quarter of the wait.

Hours
Monday to Saturday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

La Reunion

Bishop Arts, on North Bishop · $

Known for Breakfast tacos and a cortado in a room that turns into a wine bar after dark

La Reunion is a coffee shop, a kitchen and a bar in one address, and it is named for the French utopian colony that settled this part of Oak Cliff around 1855. Coffee starts at 8 a.m., which makes it the earliest proper cup in the district, and the kitchen comes on at 10 with breakfast tacos, kolaches and avocado and egg toast rather than a full sit-down brunch service.

Treat it as the light end of the list. This is where you go when you want a very good coffee and something in your hand in twenty minutes, not a two-hour table. It also keeps some of the longest hours of any business on the street and shifts to wine and cocktails at night, so it is the rare room that works at 8 a.m. and at 10 p.m.

Go-to order or tip: Come early, get a cortado and a breakfast taco, then walk the block before the shops open. It is the quietest Bishop Arts ever gets.

Hours
Coffee from 8 a.m., kitchen from 10 a.m. Closing times vary by source, so check before a late visit

Tribal All Day Cafe

Bishop Arts, on North Bishop near West Ninth · $

Known for All-day breakfast, built around oatmeal, migas and avocado toast

Tribal opened on North Bishop in 2019 and shares ownership with Written by the Seasons up the block, which is the clearest signal of why it is worth your morning. The menu is all-day breakfast rather than weekend brunch, and it leans healthy in a way the rest of this list does not, with superfood oatmeal, avocado toast, a breakfast burrito and migas.

One honest caveat, and it is the reason we have published no street number here. The Dallas Observer reported in May 2026 that Tribal was leaving its original room, one of the smallest in the district, for the former Tejas space across the street at Bishop and West Ninth, with the move expected the following month. Most directories still carry the old address at 263 North Bishop. Both doors are inside the same block, so walk to the corner and look rather than trusting a pin.

Go-to order or tip: Check its Instagram the morning of. The move is recent enough that a map pin may still send you to the wrong side of Bishop Avenue.

Hours
All day from the morning, with listings disagreeing on closing time

Cafe Brazil

Bishop Arts, north end of North Bishop · $$

Known for Breakfast at any hour, chilaquiles, and half-price mimosas at happy hour

Cafe Brazil is a small DFW chain rather than a one-off, and we are telling you that up front because it changes what the listing is for. It is not here to beat Encina. It is here because it serves breakfast from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. on a weeknight and until midnight on a Friday, which no independent in Bishop Arts does.

The Bishop Arts location serves chilaquiles and banana bread French toast off the all-day menu, pours alcohol, runs a happy hour that puts mimosas at half price, and has a covered patio. Chain or not, a plate of eggs at 10 p.m. in walking distance of the theatre is a genuinely useful thing, and this is the only address on the street that offers it.

Go-to order or tip: This is the post-show and late-shift answer, not the destination brunch. Use it when everything else on this list is dark.

Hours
Sunday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to midnight

How did we pick these?

We started from the restaurants that are actually inside Bishop Arts, which is a smaller area than most guides admit. It is a few blocks around North Bishop Avenue and West Davis Street, not all of Oak Cliff, and once you hold a list to that boundary it gets short fast. Six places here serve a real morning meal. We verified each one's address and hours against its own website or ordering page first, then cross checked against Dallas Observer, D Magazine, Time Out and PaperCity coverage.

Two names that dominate the older brunch roundups were cut because they no longer exist. Hattie's, for 18 years the obvious answer to this question, closed in February 2020. Pillar ran a Sunday brunch in the old Boulevardier space and shut in 2026. Both still show up in blog guides and aggregator listings with live hours attached, which is a good reminder that a listing is not a restaurant.

We also left off the places that serve the district but not the meal. Lucia, the best known restaurant in Bishop Arts and a Michelin listing that moved from Bib Gourmand to recommended in the 2026 Texas selection, is dinner only. Eno's Pizza Tavern opens in the afternoon. Revelers Hall on North Bishop runs live music most of the week and serves food, but we could not confirm a brunch menu or reliable morning hours from its own channels, so it belongs in your evening rather than on this list.

No partners, clients or sponsored entries appear here. Our scaffolding tool matched nothing for Dallas brunch, so nothing was pre-filled and nothing was cut for a relationship.

What should you know before you go?

Restaurant Address Brunch days Opens Reservations
Encina 614 W Davis St Saturday, Sunday 10 a.m. Yes, book ahead
Written by the Seasons 380 Melba St Saturday, Sunday Weekend mornings Yes, via Resy
Oddfellows 316 W 7th St Every day 7 a.m. None taken
La Reunion 229 N Bishop Ave Every day 8 a.m. coffee, 10 a.m. kitchen Walk in
Tribal All Day Cafe N Bishop near W 9th Every day Morning Walk in
Cafe Brazil 611 N Bishop Ave Every day 7 a.m. Walk in

Read the third column first. The two best kitchens in the district are open for brunch two days a week, which means a Tuesday visitor and a Saturday visitor are choosing from completely different lists. If you are here on a weekday, you have four options and all four are walk-ins.

Timing is the second thing. Arrive before 10 a.m. or after 1.30 p.m. and the whole district changes character. The queue at Oddfellows, the parking on the residential streets and the wait for a patio table all peak in the same ninety-minute window in the middle of a weekend morning.

Third, check Tribal before you walk to it. It moved across the street into the former Tejas space in mid 2026 and most map pins have not caught up.

Where should you go just outside the district?

Two Oak Cliff breakfast institutions sit a short drive west and neither is in Bishop Arts, so they are not on the list above. Norma's Cafe on West Davis has been serving Texas diner breakfast since 1956. Jonathon's Oak Cliff on North Beckley is the other long-running local answer. Both are worth the ten minutes if the Bishop Arts wait has beaten you, and both are honestly a different neighbourhood.

For a drink or a late dessert, stay on the block. Emporium Pies on North Bishop is the standing recommendation, and Revelers Hall a few doors down has live music most nights.

What should you do next?

Book Encina for a Sunday at 10 a.m. and make Written by the Seasons the Saturday plan, because those two rooms are small and weekend only. If you did not plan ahead, walk to Oddfellows before ten and you will be eating in fifteen minutes. Keep Cafe Brazil in your pocket for the night you want eggs at 10 p.m.

Then stay and eat something else in the neighbourhood. More Dallas reading from us on the best tacos in Oak Cliff, the best restaurants on Lower Greenville and the best barbecue in Dallas, plus the Dallas city hub and every brunch list we have published on the brunch hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

For two of the six, yes. Encina and Written by the Seasons both serve weekend brunch in small rooms and both take bookings, Written by the Seasons through Resy. Oddfellows states on its own site that it takes no brunch reservations at all, and La Reunion, Tribal and Cafe Brazil are walk-in rooms.

Earlier than you would guess. Oddfellows and Cafe Brazil both open at 7 a.m. every day and La Reunion starts pouring coffee at 8. The two weekend-only kitchens, Encina and Written by the Seasons, do not open until 10 a.m.

Yes, but not at the top two. Encina and Written by the Seasons serve brunch on Saturday and Sunday only. Oddfellows, Cafe Brazil, La Reunion and Tribal all serve breakfast or a daytime menu on weekdays, so a Tuesday morning in the district is still an easy meal.

Both are gone, and both still turn up in older brunch guides. D Magazine reported Hattie's closed in February 2020 after 18 years on its corner at 418 North Bishop. Pillar, chef Peja Krstic's bistro in the former Boulevardier space at 408 North Bishop, served a Sunday brunch and closed in 2026 after about two years, as PaperCity reported.

It is tight by late morning. There is a paid garage and some surface lots near North Bishop, plus signed residential streets either side that are worth reading properly before you leave the car. Arriving before 10 a.m. solves it, and the whole district is walkable once you are parked.

No. Bishop Arts is a few walkable blocks around North Bishop Avenue and West Davis Street inside Oak Cliff, which is a much larger part of southern Dallas. Some guides and review sites file Bishop Arts restaurants under Oak Cliff, which is why a search for one turns up addresses two miles from the other.
