The Best Restaurants in Denison, Texas

Owner Erin Griffith built the business on charcuterie and wine before it became a restaurant, and she is a certified sommelier, which is not a sentence you get to write about many kitchens in a town of 25,000. She brought in chef Jason Sheppard of Knife-and-Whisk, who has roughly two decades of fine dining behind him, to build the dinner menu.

The room is the old Katy Depot, which gives it the best dining space in Grayson County before a plate arrives. Griffith points guests at the pork chops with sweet potato grits. Sheppard points at the sea bass.

The name is Denison history. Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th president, was born less than a mile away, and the attached lounge is named for Doc Holliday, another figure with a Denison connection. Developers Tony Smith and Rhonda Borgne built it as the downtown anchor when KTEN and the Denison Development Alliance covered the project in 2022.

The dining room runs on reservations and the lounge is the walk-in half, which is a useful split. If you want a martini and an appetizer without committing to a steak dinner, sit in Doc's.

Emily Lopez worked her way up to head chef at Rick's Chophouse in downtown McKinney before opening her own place on this block, and the Herald Democrat covered the opening in February 2025. The cooking is American comfort food with her family's Latin recipes running through it.

It is the only chef-driven kitchen downtown serving all three meals, which matters more than it sounds in a town where most of the good rooms open at four in the afternoon.

Charlie Watson started this in 1956 and built a small chain across North Texas and southern Oklahoma from it. His grandson Brandon runs the Denison original now. The Texas Historical Commission has given it a Texas Treasure Business Award, which requires fifty years of continuous operation, and the state's own Texas Time Travel directory carries it. One thing to keep straight. The family's separate Watsonburger on Morton Street closed permanently in January 2026 after the owners cited staffing. This Main Street operation is the one still running.

Every aggregator that ranks Denison Mexican food puts this near the top, and it has several times the review volume of anything else in the category here. It sits in a house a few blocks off the Main Street strip rather than on the highway, which is part of why people who only drive US 75 have never heard of it.

The kitchen runs beyond the combination-plate standards, which is the argument for it over the chain-scale rooms out on the corridor.

The Doyle family has owned and run this since 1975, cooking in an enclosed pit at low temperature on indirect heat from slow burning hickory. Brisket, pork ribs, pit ham, pulled pork, sausage, hot links and smoked turkey breast is the whole board.

Shawn's Soda Shop shares the building on the east side, which makes it the rare barbecue stop where dessert is a genuine plan rather than a pie in a cellophane wrapper.

Carli Dunham moved her family business from Quanah, out in west Texas, and opened on this block in August 2020, bringing her artisan baker with her. Soups, gourmet sandwiches, salads and desserts, all made in house.

Breakfast runs in the first hours of the day and then the menu turns over to lunch, so the trip depends on what time you arrive.

There is nothing else like it in North Texas, which is why the Dallas Observer drove up here to write about it. Around twenty flavors, available fried if you want them that way, in a restored bank building where you can eat in the vault. It opened in Denison in late 2023 and a takeout-only second shop followed in downtown McKinney in July 2024.

It is a full bar operation rather than a novelty counter, and it is the single most out-of-town-guest-proof reservation in Denison.

This is the newer-build side of Denison, out where the Morton Street commercial corridor has drawn most of the city's recent construction. Two locations, this one and Anna, so it is a small group rather than a national chain.

It earns its place on hours as much as food. Seven days a week through the evening is rare here, and it is the reliable answer when the downtown rooms are dark.

It spent years at 613 N Austin Ave and moved to a larger space on West Morton in June 2026. Most directory listings still carry the old address, so trust the Morton Street one and expect your map app to argue with you.

The vegetarian half of the menu is the real distinction. Nothing else in Grayson County gives a vegetarian a full menu rather than two substitutions.
