The Best Mexican Restaurants in Greenville, TX

A researched, ranked guide to Mexican food in Greenville, Texas, from a Wesley Street tortilleria to a downtown taqueria and the county taco truck.

The Short Answer

Tortilleria La Norteñita on Wesley Street is the best Mexican food in Greenville, because it presses its own tortillas on site and opens at half past seven for breakfast tacos. La Catrina Street Tacos is the downtown pick, and Don Toro on Lee Street is the full-service Tex-Mex room.

Tortilleria La Norteñita

Wesley Street · $

Known for Tortillas pressed on site, plus tacos, platillos and breakfast burritos

A tortilleria with a kitchen attached, which is a different business from a restaurant that buys tortillas in by the case. Its own site describes the operation as tacos, platillos and fresh tortillas, and the tortillas are the reason this sits at the top of the list. You can buy a stack at the counter on the way out.

It also opens before eight in the morning, which no other Mexican kitchen in Greenville does. In a town where most rooms start at eleven, that makes it the only real option for morning tacos or a breakfast burrito.

Go-to order or tip: Buy tortillas at the counter even if you ate in. That is the thing you cannot get at any other taqueria in town.

Hours
Opens 7.30 a.m. most days and runs into the evening, later on Friday

La Catrina Street Tacos

Downtown, Lee Street · $

Known for Birria and street tacos in a sit-down room on the downtown block

Family owned, and the only good Mexican food you can walk to from the Greenville square. Everything else worth eating is out on the Wesley Street strip and needs a car. The menu is street tacos rather than combination plates, so it is short and focused.

Birria and menudo appear on its own menu images, which is a narrower and more interesting hand than the laminated Tex-Mex encyclopedia down the road.

Go-to order or tip: Two businesses have traded at 2919 Lee Street, so older listings for Los Quates point at this same door. La Catrina is the current kitchen.

Hours
Lunch into the evening Monday to Saturday, later Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday

Don Toro Latin Cuisine

Downtown, Lee Street at the old Empty Glass building · $$

Known for Full-service Tex-Mex plates, fajitas and stuffed avocado

This is the sit-down Tex-Mex room downtown, in the building that traded for years as Empty Glass Steakhouse. The family runs three kitchens across Northeast Texas, this one plus Don Toro in Bonham and Dos Laredos in Commerce, all listed on the same site.

The menu is built around combination plates rather than tacos. The Laredo Trio, the stuffed avocado filled with grilled meat and bacon, and the mixed fajita quesadilla are the dishes the kitchen leads with, and the bar runs frozen margaritas.

Go-to order or tip: Published closing times vary by platform between eight and ten at night. Phone before a late dinner.

Hours
Lunch through the evening most days. Sources disagree on the close, so call ahead

El Palenque Salas

North Wesley Street · $$

Known for A long Mexican menu in the north Wesley Street space

The newest full-service Mexican restaurant in Greenville, trading at 8119 Wesley Street in the building that spent years as Molina's No 3 Mexican Cuisine. Molina's is now flagged permanently closed on the review platforms, and El Palenque Salas is the kitchen at that address.

It is the one entry here with the thinnest public record, under two dozen independent reviews, which is why it sits fourth rather than higher. The listing is claimed, the phone is published on its own site, and the room is open.

Go-to order or tip: Older maps and menus still point this address at Molina's. Same building, different restaurant.

Hours
Opens mid-morning and runs to about ten most nights, later at the weekend

Mariachi Mexican Bar and Grill

South Wesley Street · $$

Known for The biggest independent review record of any Mexican room in town

Around 150 reviews on Yelp and close to 400 across the aggregators, which is more public record than anything else on this list. Reviewers consistently name the portions and the salsa. It is a bar and grill rather than a taqueria, so there is a full drinks list and televised sport.

One warning, and it is the reason this is not ranked higher. Listings split the street number between 5403 and 5469 Wesley Street while giving the same phone throughout. Both numbers sit on the same stretch of highway, so call before you drive.

Go-to order or tip: Call the number first and ask for the street number. Do not trust the pin your map app drops.

Hours
Late morning to about ten Monday to Thursday, later Friday and Saturday, shorter Sunday

Pelon's Tacos

Mobile, usually Highway 34 or Bourland Street · $

Known for Street tacos from a truck, plus catering

The Greenville Chamber lists this as Hunt County's taco truck and files it under food trucks and caterers, which is the honest description. Its own ordering site gives a Highway 34 address while the chamber directory carries a Bourland Street one, because a truck is where the truck is parked.

Street tacos by the each, carne asada and pollo among them, at truck prices. It is the only entry on this list that will come to you, since the catering side is at least as big as the window.

Go-to order or tip: Check its social channels for today's spot before you drive. The chamber listing says to do exactly that.

Hours
Closed Monday and Sunday. Tuesday and Wednesday to early evening, Thursday to Saturday late

Mariscos Del Golfo

Lee Street, east of downtown · $

Known for Mexican-style seafood, ceviche and whole fried tilapia

The only mariscos kitchen in Greenville, which is the whole argument for it. Its posted menu runs ceviche and shrimp salads, whole fried tilapia, fried oysters and a vuelve a la vida platter, none of which the Tex-Mex rooms on this list attempt.

It is ranked here rather than higher because it publishes no website of its own and the independent reviews are split, with recent diners praising the fish and others calling the seasoning flat. Order the fried whole fish or the ceviche and skip the combination plates.

Go-to order or tip: Go for the seafood specifically. If you want enchiladas, there are five better rooms above this one.

Hours
Opens around eleven and runs to about ten. No first-party source, so call ahead

TaMolly's of Greenville

Interstate 30 frontage, east side · $$

Known for Queso, tamales and a reliable interstate Tex-Mex room

Honest framing first. This is not a Greenville original. TaMolly's runs six restaurants across Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas, and Greenville is one of them, so it is a small regional chain and we rank it last for that reason.

What it gives you is certainty. The hours are published by the company, it is a Greenville Chamber member, and it is open every day of the week, which half this list is not. If you are coming off I-30 at eight at night with a car full of people, this is the room that will be open and serving queso.

Go-to order or tip: It is the easiest Mexican food to reach from the interstate and the last one serving on a Sunday evening.

Hours
Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., Friday and Saturday to 9.30 p.m.

How did we pick these?

There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. Nothing in clients.json runs a restaurant in Hunt County, so the scaffold pre-filled nothing and nothing was cut for a relationship. Every pick is editorial.

The test was a street address inside Greenville that holds up across at least two independent records, plus confirmation the kitchen is actually serving now. Four of the eight publish their own websites, which is where the addresses, phone numbers and hours in those entries come from. The other four were pinned through the Greenville Chamber directory, the city's own business directory and current review listings.

The second test did most of the cutting. Los Quates still ranks in search for Greenville Mexican food, and its listed address, 2919 Lee Street, is La Catrina's front door. Molina's No 3 at 8119 Wesley Street is flagged permanently closed, and a second Molina's listing at 3811 Wesley Street is closed too. El Fenix comes up constantly for Greenville and shows a 3102 I-30 frontage address on the delivery platforms, but the company's own location list does not carry a Greenville restaurant, so we left it off rather than send people to a door we could not confirm. El Rey Seafood Shack on Johnson Street exists on exactly one ordering platform and nowhere else, so it is out until a second record appears.

We also label two things plainly. TaMolly's is a six-restaurant regional chain, ranked last for it. Mariachi's street number is published two ways, 5403 and 5469 Wesley Street, on the same phone number, and we say so in the entry rather than pick one and hope.

What should you know before you go?

Greenville's Mexican food splits cleanly in two, and the split is geographic. Downtown Lee Street has the taqueria and the full-service room. Wesley Street, the highway strip, has the tortilleria, the seafood and the bar and grill.

Restaurant Style Where Price
Tortilleria La Norteñita Tortilleria and taqueria Wesley St $
La Catrina Street Tacos Street tacos, sit down Downtown Lee St $
Don Toro Latin Cuisine Full-service Tex-Mex Downtown Lee St $$
El Palenque Salas Full-service Mexican North Wesley St $$
Mariachi Mexican Bar and Grill Bar and grill South Wesley St $$
Pelon's Tacos Taco truck Moves, call first $
Mariscos Del Golfo Mexican seafood Lee St, east $
TaMolly's Chain Tex-Mex I-30 frontage $$

Two practical notes. Only one kitchen on this list opens before eleven, so breakfast tacos mean Tortilleria La Norteñita or nothing. And the published closing times on the two downtown rooms disagree between platforms by as much as two hours, so a nine o'clock dinner needs a phone call first.

Where should you eat tacos versus plates?

If you want tacos, go downtown or to the truck. La Catrina does birria and street tacos in a room you can walk to from the square, and Pelon's does them out of a window at truck prices. Both are short menus done one way.

If you want plates, fajitas, enchiladas and a margarita, that is Don Toro on Lee Street or El Palenque Salas up on north Wesley. Don Toro is part of a three-kitchen family group that also runs rooms in two towns we have covered, which is useful if you are driving the region: see the best restaurants in Bonham and the best restaurants in Commerce.

And if you want fish, there is exactly one answer. Mariscos Del Golfo on Lee Street is the only mariscos kitchen in Hunt County, and it is worth the trip for the whole fried tilapia even though the rest of the menu is uneven.

What should you do next?

Start at Tortilleria La Norteñita on a weekday morning, eat breakfast tacos, and buy a bag of tortillas on the way out. That is the single best half hour of Mexican food in Greenville and it costs almost nothing.

For dinner, walk the downtown block and choose between La Catrina and Don Toro by whether you want tacos or a plate. If you are passing through late or on a Sunday, TaMolly's by the interstate is the one that will be open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Tortilleria La Norteñita at 3811 Wesley Street presses tortillas on site and sells them by the stack at the counter alongside its taco and platillo menu. It is the only business in Greenville doing that, and it is the reason the place tops this list.

Tortilleria La Norteñita is the only one, opening at about half past seven most mornings and running later on Friday. Everything else in town, including the downtown taquerias, starts at eleven or later, so a morning taco plan means Wesley Street.

It closed. The review platforms now flag Molina's No 3 Mexican Cuisine at 8119 Wesley Street as permanently closed, and El Palenque Salas trades at that address instead. An older Molina's listing at 3811 Wesley Street is also marked closed.

Mariscos Del Golfo at 4002 Lee Street is the one mariscos kitchen in town, serving ceviche, shrimp salads, whole fried tilapia and a vuelve a la vida platter. It publishes no website, so call (903) 454-6818 to check hours before you go.

TaMolly's on the I-30 frontage road serves Sunday from eleven to half past eight, and El Palenque Salas and Mariachi both post Sunday hours. La Catrina downtown and Pelon's Tacos are closed Sunday, and Tortilleria La Norteñita runs a shorter Sunday.
