The Best Roofers in Houston

Seven Houston roofing companies ranked on credentials you can actually check, because Texas does not license roofers and the storm season sorts the field.

The Short Answer

Amstill Roofing on Memorial Drive is the first call for a Houston house. It has worked the city since 1974, it publishes its Roofing Contractors Association of Texas licence number, and it holds the top tier at both GAF and Owens Corning. For a commercial roof, call Chamberlin on Langfield Road.

Amstill Roofing

Memorial, west Houston · Free inspection, then quote based

Known for A published RCAT licence number and the widest material range in the city

Amstill is the only residential roofer in Houston we found that publishes its Roofing Contractors Association of Texas licence number in plain sight, 01-0483, which is the single most useful thing a roofer can do in a state that does not license the trade. It has been working Houston since 1974 under founder Frank Stilley, and its own site names Sam Stilley as the current chief executive, so the succession is on the record rather than implied by a stock photo.

The certification stack is the broadest here. GAF Master Elite, Owens Corning Platinum, CertainTeed, Malarkey, plus DaVinci for composite and Ludowici for clay tile. That last pair matters more in Houston than people expect, because the older streets inside the Loop carry a lot of tile and slate, and the list of firms that will touch either without subcontracting it out is short. There is a walk-in location on Memorial Drive, and the company also runs a second office in Round Rock.

Go-to order or tip: Ask for the RCAT number on the first call and check it with RCAT rather than taking the badge on the website. Any roofer who holds the licence will give it without hesitating, and the ones who will not have told you something.

State Roofing Company

Addicks, west Houston · Free inspection, then quote based

Known for Windstorm certification work, which almost no Houston roofer lists as a service

State Roofing publishes an RCAT licence number too, 03-0169, and it holds GAF Master Elite with the President's Club residential award, which is the three-star tier above Master Elite rather than a directory badge. It lists membership of both the Better Business Bureau and the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas.

The reason it is this high is one line on its own services list that nobody else here carries. Wind storm certification. If your house is in the strip of Harris County east of Highway 146, your insurance may hang on a Texas Department of Insurance WPI-8 certificate, and a roofer who already works inside that process is worth more to you than one who has to learn it on your job. One honest note. The about page does not give a founding year, so we are not quoting one, and it runs a second office in College Station at 4090 Raymond Stotzer Parkway.

Go-to order or tip: If you are in La Porte, Pasadena, Seabrook, Shoreacres or Morgan's Point, raise the WPI-8 before anyone quotes. Getting it wrong is not a roofing problem, it is an insurance problem you find out about after the next storm.

M&M Roofing, Siding & Windows

Townhurst, Spring Branch · Free inspection, then quote based

Known for Forty-plus years at one trade in one city, plus the whole exterior

M&M has been going since 1983, a date its own site states and the Better Business Bureau's record of the business start independently matches, which is a better class of evidence than most founding years in this trade get. It is a roofing, siding, window and gutter contractor rather than a roof-only shop, so it is the sensible call when the storm took the roof and the west-facing siding together and you would rather not coordinate two crews.

It has grown into a multi-city operation, with offices listed for Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Beaumont, Seabrook and Lake Charles. We would normally treat that as a strike against a local list, and here it is not, because the Houston address is the original one and the Seabrook office sits inside the windstorm zone rather than being a landing page for it. Multi-family work is on the service list as well.

Go-to order or tip: If you are replacing roof and siding at once, ask them to sequence the siding after the roof. Doing it the other way round means the roofing crew works over new siding, and the dents show up in the right light six months later.

Alliance Roofing Company

Pearland, south of Houston · Free inspection, then quote based

Known for The southern suburbs, tile and metal, and a named founder

Founded in 1990 by Eric Enneking, GAF Master Elite, BBB A plus, and a participant in the GAF Roofs for Troops rebate. The range runs past composition shingle into standing seam and metal restoration, clay and concrete tile, siding, windows and gutters, and it publishes roof maintenance plans, which is a service most residential roofers here do not bother to offer and which is the cheapest way to make a roof last.

Two things to be straight about. The address is Pearland, not Houston, about twenty minutes south of the Loop, and the service area it publishes covers Clear Lake, Friendswood, League City, Webster and Pasadena as well as the city. Also worth knowing if you are searching from memory, the domain houstonroofing.com now redirects here, so a search that looks like it is finding a generic Houston firm is finding this one.

Go-to order or tip: Ask about the maintenance plan even if you are not replacing the roof yet. On a Gulf Coast house, the thing that kills a roof early is usually flashing and sealant failure, not the shingles, and both are cheap to catch on a schedule.

Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing

Langfield Road, northwest Houston · Commercial contract work

Known for The commercial and building envelope pick, in Houston since 1978

This is not a house roofer and you should not call it about a bungalow. Chamberlin is a commercial and industrial contractor whose company history goes back to 1897 and whose Houston roofing and waterproofing business was founded in 1978, which makes it the longest-running commercial roofing operation on this page by a wide margin.

The work is single-ply TPO, PVC and EPDM, modified bitumen, metal systems, coatings and restoration, plus the part that makes it different, waterproofing and building envelope repair. On a flat commercial roof the leak is very often not the roof, it is the parapet, the joint or the facade, and a contractor who does both does not have to argue with another trade about whose problem it is. One honest note. Its Houston page names no specific manufacturer certification, only certified professionals in general terms, so the case for it is the record and the scope rather than a badge.

Go-to order or tip: If you manage a building rather than own one, ask for the preventative maintenance programme rather than a repair quote. The firms that sell maintenance are the ones that expect to still be looking at your roof in ten years.

R.B. Hash & Associates

Derrington Road, northwest Houston · Commercial contract work, some residential

Known for In-house sheet metal fabrication and slate work

A family firm founded in Houston in 1991 that does commercial, industrial and some residential roofing, waterproofing and facade repair. What sets it apart is the architectural and sheet metal shop it runs in house. Most roofers order flashing, copings and custom metal from a supplier and wait; a contractor with its own fabrication can make an odd detail the same week, which is the difference between a historic cornice being repaired and being replaced with something that nearly fits.

It is also listed as a contractor member by the Slate Roofing Contractors Association, which is an outside trade body rather than a paid directory, and it works beyond Texas into Louisiana and further. If you have an old Houston building with copper, slate or a complicated parapet, this is the number.

Go-to order or tip: Send photographs of the detail you are worried about with the first enquiry. A shop that fabricates its own metal can usually tell you from a picture whether your problem is a day of work or a month of it.

Holden Roofing

Rosenberg, with a Houston office · Free inspection, then quote based

Known for The longest record in the region, running since 1961

Holden has been roofing in this part of Texas since 1961, which is the longest run of anybody on this page, and it holds Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, the manufacturer's top residential tier. It covers residential shingle, metal and tile along with commercial low-slope and coatings, and it does storm work including emergency tarping, which is the service that actually matters in the week after a hurricane.

It is last here for one reason, and it is a reason we apply to everybody. Its own site lists seven offices, Houston, Spring, Austin, San Antonio, San Marcos, Temple and Dallas, and publishes a phone number for each and a street address for none. Business directories put the corporate office at 2128 First Street in Rosenberg, but that is directory data, not the company's own word, so we are not printing it as fact. If a verifiable address matters to you, ask for one before you sign.

Go-to order or tip: Ask which office your crew will actually come from. With seven locations on one phone number, the answer decides how fast somebody gets back out if something goes wrong in year two.

How did we pick these?

Houston is a city where the roof is the part of the house that fails, and the result set for this search is almost entirely companies grading their own homework. So we ignored every adjective and ranked on things a reader can verify in ten minutes.

Start with the fact that reframes the whole question. Texas does not license roofing contractors. Roofing is not on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's list of regulated occupations, which runs to more than forty trades and does include air conditioning contractors and electricians. So the phrase "licensed and insured", which appears on nearly every Houston roofer's homepage, is close to meaningless, and we applied the same test here that we used on the Dallas roofing market.

What is checkable sorts the field fast:

  • A published RCAT licence number, not just the logo. Two firms here print theirs.
  • Manufacturer tiers. GAF Master Elite and the President's Club award above it, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred, CertainTeed.
  • A founding year that something outside the company agrees with.
  • A Houston-area street address that is not a mailbox or a landing page.

That ordering is why Amstill is first and Holden, despite a 1961 start and the top Owens Corning tier, is last: it publishes no street address for any of its seven offices.

What is different about Houston, and it is not hail. Dallas roofers sell against hail. Here the governing document is wind. TDI's own Harris County page puts La Porte, Morgan's Point, Pasadena, Seabrook and Shoreacres inside the designated catastrophe area where they fall inside the city limits and east of Highway 146, and structures built after dates in 1996 and 1997 need a WPI-8 certificate of compliance. That is a small slice of a very large county, but if you are in it, a roofer who already works inside the WPI-8 process is worth more than a better-reviewed one who does not. It is the single reason State Roofing is ranked second.

No business on this list is a client of ours and none paid for its place.

Which Houston roofer fits which job?

Firm Trading since Top credential published Best for
Amstill 1974 RCAT 01-0483, GAF Master Elite, OC Platinum Tile, slate, most houses
State Roofing Not stated RCAT 03-0169, GAF President's Club Windstorm certification
M&M 1983 Four decades, one city Roof plus siding and windows
Alliance 1990 GAF Master Elite Pearland and the Clear Lake side
Chamberlin Houston since 1978 Building envelope scope Commercial and flat roofs
R.B. Hash 1991 In-house sheet metal shop Slate, copper, odd details
Holden 1961 Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Storm response and tarping

What should you know before you call?

Get three written quotes and make each one name the shingle line, the underlayment, the ventilation plan and the warranty tier. Two quotes that look $4,000 apart are often quoting different roofs.

Timing works against you twice a year. After a named storm every crew in the region is booked and out of town companies arrive to take the overflow, and in the deep summer tear-off work slows down because nobody can safely stay on a black roof all afternoon. The quiet windows are late autumn and late winter, which is also when you can get a crew that is not rushing.

If you are filing insurance, do not sign anything that assigns your claim to the contractor until you have read it twice. And photograph the roof and the attic before the crew arrives. Interior water staining is the evidence that settles arguments later.

What should you do next?

If you own a house inside the Loop or out along Memorial, call Amstill and ask for the RCAT number on the phone. If you are in La Porte, Seabrook, Pasadena or Shoreacres, call State Roofing first and lead with the WPI-8 question. If you manage a commercial building, it is Chamberlin, or R.B. Hash when the problem involves metal or slate.

Then browse the rest of our Houston coverage and the other cities on the roofing hub. If you are new to the city and working through the practical list, our guide to late night food in Houston is a more enjoyable use of an evening than roof quotes.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Roofing is not on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's list of regulated occupations, which covers more than forty trades including electricians and air conditioning contractors. The closest thing is the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, which runs a voluntary licence that roofers choose to hold. That is why "licensed and insured" on a Houston roofer's homepage tells you almost nothing, and why two of the entries above are ranked partly on publishing an RCAT number you can go and check.

A WPI-8 is a certificate of compliance issued by the Texas Department of Insurance for structures that meet windstorm building standards. Most of Harris County does not need one, but TDI's own Harris County page puts the cities of La Porte, Morgan's Point, Pasadena, Seabrook and Shoreacres inside the designated catastrophe area where they are inside the city limits and east of Highway 146, with the requirement keyed to when the structure was built. If that is you, ask your insurer before the work starts, not after.

Because any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it. Houston roofing prices move with the storm cycle, insurance settlements and material costs, and a roof on a 1920s Heights bungalow with tile and three dormers is a different job from a 2015 Cypress hip roof of the same square footage. Every company here gives a free inspection. Get three, in writing, with the material and the warranty tier named.

Be careful. Houston draws out of town storm chasers after every major wind event, and the pattern is a door knock, a free inspection, a signed insurance assignment and a company that is in another state by the time the warranty matters. Every firm on this page has a Houston-area address or a phone line that has been answered for decades. Neither guarantees good work, but both mean somebody is still here next year.

Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing and R.B. Hash & Associates are primarily commercial and industrial contractors, and Chamberlin also does waterproofing and building envelope work. State Roofing, M&M, Alliance and Holden all list commercial alongside residential. Amstill is primarily residential with commercial coatings. For a flat roof on an occupied building, start with the first two.

It is a manufacturer certification, not a government one. GAF restricts it to a minority of its contractor network and ties its longest system warranties to it, and the President's Club award sits above it. It is worth something because the manufacturer that has to honour your warranty is the one issuing the badge, but it is a measure of standing with GAF rather than independent proof of workmanship. Treat it as one signal among several.
