How did we pick these?
Jasper is the hardest town we have researched for this site, and it is worth explaining why before you read the list. There are around 7,000 people here, the nearest interstate is 60 miles away, and almost nobody writes about the food. The chamber of commerce member directory would not load for us. There is no city dining page. The local paper, the Jasper Newsboy, is the oldest continuously published weekly in Texas and its restaurant coverage is not online in any form we could search.
So the first thing we did was throw out the easy answers. Search for restaurants in Jasper, Texas and you get a wall of generated listicles with titles like 18 Best Restaurants in Jasper, written by sites that have clearly never been here, several of which quietly mix in results from Jasper, Indiana, Jasper, Alabama, Jasper, Georgia and Jasper, Alberta. One widely cited page describes a Jasper brewery that is in Canada. None of that went into this list.
What we used instead: Texas Monthly's barbecue coverage, which named Billy's to its top 50 and interviewed the pitmaster. A Lufkin Daily News restaurant review of The Cedar Tree, from the nearest newspaper that actually sends reviewers out. A Better Business Bureau listing for Smitty's. And current review records on Tripadvisor, Yelp and Apple Maps, which the guidelines for this site treat as acceptable cross checking when editorial coverage does not exist. Every address and phone number below appears in at least two places, and where two sources gave different street numbers we have printed the street and said so rather than guessing.
The cuts were heavy. The Jewel Bistro Cafe at 147 North Main was the one we most wanted to include, a downtown breakfast and lunch room with its own website, its own ordering system and about 170 reviews averaging 4.5. We left it off because Birdeye lists it as permanently closed and Yelp flags it closed while its own site still advertises daily hours, which is the same unresolvable conflict that keeps a restaurant off a list. The Catfish Hut ranks first on Tripadvisor for Jasper and we could not confirm a single address for it from two independent sources, with the one address we found sitting well outside town. Fish Tales on East Gibson is open and real and runs 3.6 across 14 reviews, too thin a sample to rank. Sujey's New American Table on North Austin is new and carries six reviews. Spring's Tex-Mex has three. Chinese Kitchen, Son Asian Bistro and Jasper Java are all plausible and none had enough behind them to place. The chains on the highway went out as a matter of course.
No business on this list is a client of ours. Nothing in our client file matched Jasper and restaurants, so this is a straight editorial ranking with no partner placements to disclose.
What should you know before you go?
Jasper runs on Wheeler Street, which is US 96 through town, and Gibson Street crossing it. Four of the six are on Wheeler, north or south. Nothing on this list is actually on the courthouse square, which is the single biggest difference between Jasper and the other small East Texas towns we have written up.
The thing that will catch you out is Billy's three day week. The best restaurant in Jasper is closed four days out of seven, and most of the directory listings you will find still show the old longer schedule.
| Restaurant | Where | Kind | Review depth | Hours confidence |
| Billy's Old Fashion Barbecue | 1601 N Main St | Barbecue | Texas Monthly top 50 | Medium, Thursday to Saturday only |
| Hamburger Depot | S Wheeler St | Burgers | 4.7 and 4.4 on two platforms | High, closed Sunday |
| Cedar Tree | S Wheeler St | Country buffet | About 4.0 on 107 ratings | High, roughly 11am to 9pm |
| Smitty's Smoke House | 1006 S Wheeler St | Barbecue | 4.2 on 79 ratings | Medium, normal week |
| Martin's Mexican | 410 N Wheeler St | Tex-Mex | About 4.0, long standing | Low, call for evenings |
| Elijah's Cafe | 201 W Gibson St | Southern homestyle | 3.9 and 3.7, deepest counts | Medium, 11am to 8pm |
If you are here for Lake Sam Rayburn, the lake's southern end is about 15 miles north and the Angelina National Forest is north of that, so you will be driving back into Jasper to eat unless you stop at the Rayburn or Brookeland branches of Hamburger Depot.
What should you do next?
Come on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, because that is the only window when the best thing in town is actually smoking. Get to Billy's before 2pm, order the brisket and the house made beef links, and if you are staying the evening eat at Hamburger Depot rather than gambling on hours somewhere else.
If you are building a longer East Texas drive, Jasper sits between two towns we have covered properly. The best restaurants in Lufkin is about an hour northwest and has the deeper list, and the best restaurants in Beaumont is an hour south with the Gulf Coast cooking. The Jasper city hub collects everything we publish here, and the best restaurants category has the same treatment for other Texas towns.
