The Best Restaurants in Lubbock, Texas

Ten Lubbock restaurants verified open in 2026, led by a James Beard finalist kitchen downtown and a family taqueria that made both Texas Monthly lists.

The Very Best of Texas Editors 4 min read How we rank →

The Short Answer

The Nicolett on Broadway is the best restaurant in Lubbock. Chef Finn Walter was a James Beard finalist for Best Chef Texas in 2026 and Bon Appetit named it one of America's best new restaurants in 2022. Jimenez y Friends is the one to beat for tacos and barbecue, and The West Table is the reliable downtown dinner.

The Nicolett

Downtown, on Broadway · $$$$

Known for High Plains cooking from a James Beard finalist kitchen

This is the restaurant that changed what people outside West Texas think Lubbock can do. The Nicolett opened in autumn 2020, Bon Appetit put it on its Best New Restaurants in America list in 2022, and the James Beard Foundation made chef Finn Walter a Best Chef Texas semifinalist in 2022 and a finalist in 2026. Those are the three credentials the restaurant itself publishes, and they are not small ones.

The cooking is built around High Plains ingredients rather than imported luxury, which is the whole argument. Nothing else in the city is trying to do this, and if you have one expensive dinner in Lubbock it should be this one.

Go-to order or tip: Walk ins are workable on weeknights and weekends are not. Reserve for Friday and Saturday, or come at 4pm for happy hour Tuesday through Friday.

Hours
Dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5pm, with happy hour from 4pm Tuesday to Friday, closed Sunday and Monday

Jimenez y Friends Barbecue y Taqueria

34th Street, central Lubbock · $

Known for A family tortilleria that made Texas Monthly for tacos, then again for barbecue

The Jimenez family ran a tortilleria and taqueria that Texas Monthly put on its 50 Best Tacos in Texas list. Then Michael Flores folded his Friends' Barbecue pop up into the family business, the name changed to Jimenez y Friends Barbecue y Taqueria, and Texas Monthly came back for the smoked meat. USA Today named it a Restaurant of the Year for 2025.

What that means in practice is one address doing three things well. Handmade tortillas from the tortilleria, breakfast tacos built on smoked brisket, and a full barbecue menu at the weekend. There is a bakery side too.

Go-to order or tip: Come at the weekend if you want both halves. The barbecue menu runs Saturday and Sunday, and this is a morning and early afternoon operation, not a dinner one.

Hours
Mornings into the early afternoon, closed the first part of the week, with barbecue at weekends

The West Table Kitchen and Bar

Downtown, in the Pioneer Building · $$$

Known for New American cooking on local High Plains sourcing, in the old Pioneer Hotel

The West Table opened in 2014 in the ground floor of the old Pioneer Hotel, which is the building that started downtown Lubbock's residential turnaround. It is the restaurant that made farm to table a normal idea here rather than a novelty, leaning on High Plains producers, and it has held the standard for more than a decade.

It is a narrow window. Dinner only, five nights, and the kitchen stops at nine. That is worth knowing if you are flying in late or coming off a Tech game.

Go-to order or tip: It and The Nicolett are four blocks apart and keep almost the same schedule, both closed Sunday and Monday. If you have two nights downtown, book one each.

Hours
Dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5pm to 9pm, closed Sunday and Monday

Cocina de La Sirena

Salem Avenue, west Lubbock · $$$

Known for A slow food bistro with a seasonal menu and a tequila bar

Chef Jessica Fultz cooked in San Francisco, Santa Fe and Austin before partnering with owner Cat Traxler on this. It runs as a slow food bistro, which here means organic produce and dairy, pastured beef, poultry and pork, sustainable seafood and a menu that changes with what the local farms have.

The framing is modern Latin American with a tequila bar attached, and the seasonal changes mean the menu you read online may not be the menu on the table. That is the point rather than a problem.

Go-to order or tip: It sits in a small shopping center suite rather than on a street front, so look for the unit number. Dinner only, and the room is not big.

Hours
Dinner Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday, with a later close Friday and Saturday

Tom and Bingo's Hickory Pit Bar-B-Que

34th Street, Tech Terrace · $

Known for Sliced and chopped beef sandwiches out of a boxy lunch counter, for over fifty years

This is the oldest restaurant still trading in Lubbock and it has been turning out sliced and chopped beef sandwiches from the same small building on 34th for more than half a century. Sources disagree on the founding year, with 1946 in Amarillo, 1952 in Lubbock and a 75 years claim in 2023 all in circulation, so we are not going to print one.

What is not in dispute is the format. It is a lunch counter, it sells sandwiches and meat by the pound, and it stops when the meat is gone. Do not arrive at one thirty expecting a full case.

Go-to order or tip: Go early, order the sliced beef sandwich, and take cash in case the card machine is having a day.

Hours
Lunch only, and it closes when the meat runs out

La Diosa Cellars

Depot District · $$

Known for Spanish and Mediterranean tapas with a wine list, in the Depot District

La Diosa has been the Depot District's grown up room for years, a tapas bistro with an eclectic wine list covering local High Plains bottles alongside international ones. The High Plains is a real wine region, most of the grapes in Texas wine are grown within an hour or two of here, and this is the easiest place downtown to taste that without driving out to a vineyard.

Plush chairs, low light and live music some nights. It is a place to sit for three hours rather than eat and leave.

Go-to order or tip: Friday and Saturday it opens at midday and runs late, which makes it the one Depot District room that works for a long lunch as well as a long evening.

Hours
Closed Sunday and Monday, opening late afternoon midweek and at midday Friday and Saturday

Cast Iron Grill

19th Street, near downtown · $

Known for Biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, and a pie case with more than 30 pies

Old fashioned breakfast and lunch, done properly. Biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos, three egg omelets with hash browns in the morning, then burgers, chicken fried steak and pork chops after eleven. It is the most Lubbock room on this list.

The pie shop at the front is the reason people who do not eat breakfast out still know the name. More than 30 pies, made in limited numbers, and when a pie is gone it is gone for the day.

Go-to order or tip: It is closed Saturday and Sunday, which catches out every visitor. This is a weekday breakfast, and go before nine if you want your pick of the pie case.

Hours
Weekdays only, breakfast through early afternoon, closed both weekend days

Triple J Chophouse and Brew Co

Depot District, across from the Buddy Holly Center · $$$

Known for Steaks and house brewed beer, and it calls itself Lubbock's oldest brewery

Triple J is a chophouse and a brewpub in one building, which in a city with a serious steak habit and a growing beer scene is a sensible combination. It brews on site and describes itself as the oldest brewery in Lubbock. There is a patio and live music.

Its position matters as much as its food. It sits on Buddy Holly Avenue across from the Buddy Holly Center, which makes it the obvious dinner either side of a show at the Cactus Theater.

Go-to order or tip: Closed Sunday and Monday like most of the Depot District. Book if you are eating before a show, because the pre-show hour fills.

Hours
Tuesday through Saturday from late morning, closing later Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday

One Guy from Italy

University Avenue, by Texas Tech · $

Known for Calzones from a family recipe, next to the Texas Tech campus, for over forty years

Family owned and running in Lubbock for more than forty years, which by student town standards is geological. The calzone is the order, made to an old family recipe, and it is the thing generations of Texas Tech students describe when they talk about food in Lubbock.

There are two locations. The University Avenue one is the campus one and the 50th Street one at 4320 50th St is the one with parking. The menus are the same.

Go-to order or tip: Order the calzone, not the pizza, and expect it to be enough for two people unless you skipped lunch.

Hours
Open daily from late morning to mid evening, with the two locations keeping slightly different closing times

Picoso's Mexican Kitchen

Milwaukee Avenue, southwest Lubbock · $$

Known for Family run Tex-Mex on the southwest side, open seven days

Lubbock's Mexican and Tex-Mex scene is deep and mostly invisible to visitors, who get funneled onto the chains along the loop. Picoso's is the independent that is easy to find and consistently good, family owned and operated and serving since 2018 by its own account.

It is also the entry on this list most likely to be open when you want it. Seven days a week, weekend brunch hours, and a kitchen that runs to mid evening, which almost nothing else here does.

Go-to order or tip: This is the Sunday answer. When The Nicolett, The West Table, La Sirena, La Diosa and Triple J are all dark, Picoso's is open.

Hours
Open daily, from late morning on weekdays and mid morning at weekends, closing mid evening

How did we pick these?

Lubbock is a city of a quarter of a million people, so this is not an attempt to enumerate every restaurant in it. It is a shortlist of the ten places a visitor or a new resident should know about first, and every one of them was checked the same way.

We started from what independent national and state publications have actually written about Lubbock rather than from an aggregator ranking. Texas Monthly's taco and barbecue coverage put Jimenez y Friends on the map twice. Bon Appetit and the James Beard Foundation are the source for The Nicolett, via the restaurant's own awards page. KTTZ, Lubbock's public radio station, covered Tom and Bingo's. Then we went to each restaurant's own site or ordering page for the address, the phone number and the current schedule.

There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. Nothing was pre-filled into the file and nobody paid to be here.

We held the line at the city limits. Evie Mae's Pit Barbecue is one of the best barbecue joints in Texas and it is in Wolfforth, 12 miles southwest, so it is named in the FAQ rather than ranked here. Putting a Wolfforth address under a Lubbock headline is exactly the geographic fudging this site exists to avoid.

We would not print a founding year for Tom and Bingo's. Three different years are in circulation, 1946 for the original Amarillo shop, 1952 for the Lubbock one, and a 75 years figure used in 2023 coverage that implies a fourth. The card says more than fifty years, which every source supports, and no more than that.

We left out Claraboya Scratch Kitchen and Bar, which is well reviewed, because it operates inside a hotel and we could not confirm its details from a source it controls.

What should you know before you go?

The single most useful fact about eating in Lubbock is that the good rooms close early in the week, not late. Sunday and Monday take out most of this list.

Restaurant Area Price Closed
The Nicolett Downtown $$$$ Sunday and Monday
Jimenez y Friends 34th St $ Early week, daytime only
The West Table Downtown $$$ Sunday and Monday
Cocina de La Sirena Salem Ave $$$ Sunday and Monday
Tom and Bingo's 34th St $ Lunch only, sells out
La Diosa Cellars Depot District $$ Sunday and Monday
Cast Iron Grill 19th St $ Saturday and Sunday
Triple J Chophouse Depot District $$$ Sunday and Monday
One Guy from Italy University Ave $ Open daily
Picoso's Milwaukee Ave $$ Open daily

Six of the ten are closed on Sunday. Cast Iron Grill is the reverse case and closes at the weekend instead, because it serves the working week. If you are in town for one night, make it a Tuesday through Saturday night.

The second thing is geography. Downtown and the Depot District hold five of these within about a mile, and they are walkable from one another. Milwaukee Avenue in the southwest and Salem Avenue in the west both need the car, and the drive across Lubbock is easy, since the loop moves and parking is free almost everywhere.

The third is that several of these are lunch businesses. Jimenez y Friends, Tom and Bingo's and Cast Iron Grill are all finished by mid afternoon. Plan them as the reason you are awake, not as the thing you do after a long day.

What about barbecue and tacos specifically?

Lubbock punches above its size on both, and the same address is now the answer to both questions. Jimenez y Friends made Texas Monthly's 50 Best Tacos list as a tortilleria and taqueria, then made the magazine's barbecue coverage after Michael Flores brought his smoker into the family business. Tom and Bingo's is the other barbecue answer and it is a different thing entirely, an old lunch counter selling sandwiches rather than a modern craft pit.

If you want the West Texas barbecue that gets written about statewide, that is Evie Mae's, and it is in Wolfforth. Twelve miles and a separate city, but a short drive.

What should you do next?

One night in Lubbock, Tuesday through Saturday, no budget limit: The Nicolett. One night with a budget: The West Table, or Triple J before a show at the Cactus Theater. One morning: Jimenez y Friends for brisket breakfast tacos, or Cast Iron Grill for biscuits and a slice of pie on a weekday.

Our Lubbock city page collects everything we publish on the city, and the Texas restaurant rankings cover the rest of the state. If you are driving the Panhandle and West Texas, Amarillo is about two hours north and Midland is about two hours south.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, and this is the most common mistake in Lubbock food searches. Evie Mae's is at 217 US Highway 62 in Wolfforth, a separate city about 12 miles southwest of downtown Lubbock. It is excellent and it is worth the drive, but it is not a Lubbock restaurant, so it is not on a Lubbock list.

The Nicolett on Broadway. Chef Finn Walter was a James Beard Best Chef Texas semifinalist in 2022 and a finalist in 2026, and Bon Appetit named it one of the best new restaurants in America in 2022. The West Table in the Pioneer Building is the other downtown option and costs less.

La Diosa Cellars on 17th Street for tapas and High Plains wine, and Triple J Chophouse on Buddy Holly Avenue for steak and house brewed beer. Both close Sunday and Monday. The Depot District sits between downtown and the Texas Tech campus and holds the Buddy Holly Center and the Cactus Theater.

Less than you expect. The Nicolett, The West Table, Cocina de La Sirena, La Diosa Cellars, Triple J and Cast Iron Grill are all closed on Sunday. Picoso's and One Guy from Italy are open, and Jimenez y Friends runs its barbecue menu on Sunday mornings into the early afternoon.

More than most people realize. The Texas High Plains grows the large majority of the grapes used in Texas wine, and the tasting rooms in and around Lubbock pour a lot of it. La Diosa Cellars in the Depot District is the easiest place to drink High Plains wine with food without leaving the city.

One Guy from Italy on University Avenue is the campus institution and has been for over forty years, and the calzone is the order. Cast Iron Grill on 19th Street covers the weekday breakfast, and Jimenez y Friends on 34th covers tacos. None of the three will cost much.
