The Best Barbecue in Lufkin, Texas

Seven verified Lufkin barbecue joints ranked, from the post oak trailer Texas Monthly profiled to the hickory brick pits fired downtown since 1950.

The Very Best of Texas Editors 4 min read How we rank →

The Short Answer

Boxcar BBQ is the best barbecue in Lufkin, a downtown trailer running post oak in an offset smoker that Texas Monthly profiled. Wade's Barbecue is the two-day-a-week one-man operation worth planning around, and Stringer's Lufkin Bar-B-Q has fired the same hickory brick pits on South Chestnut since 1950.

Boxcar BBQ

Downtown, West Jackson Avenue · $$

Known for Post oak brisket and once-a-week pork steak out of a downtown trailer

Jeremy Staggs opened Boxcar in 2023 and it is the joint that pulled statewide attention back to Angelina County. The meat runs through an offset smoker fueled by post oak, and the board covers brisket, pork spareribs, turkey breast, pulled pork and locally made sausage. Texas Monthly's barbecue desk profiled it and singled out the once-a-week pork steak and pork belly burnt ends.

It did not make Texas Monthly's Top 50 for 2025, and we are not going to pretend it did. What it has instead is a crowd that sells the trailer out on a three-day week, and a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation dated February 20, 2026 for a 3,725 square foot, roughly 360,000 dollar remodel at 212 E Burke Ave. That address is meant to become a sit-down room seating around 100 with a 1,000 gallon smoker behind it.

Go-to order or tip: Check the Facebook page the morning you go. The Jackson Avenue trailer is the address every directory still carries, but the Burke Avenue move has been permitted and announced, so confirm before you drive.

Hours
Thursday through Saturday, late morning until early evening or sell out. Closed Sunday through Wednesday.

Wade's Barbecue

South Chestnut Street · $

Known for One man, three meats, two days a week

Wade Barbe, pronounced bar-bee, is the owner, the pitmaster, the server and the cleaning crew. Texas Monthly ran him under exactly that headline. The menu is brisket, ribs and sausage, with a mashed potato salad and pinto beans seasoned with salt and black pepper. No specials, no dessert, no elaborate rub.

He started out parked at Lufkin Mall in March 2020, weeks before the mall closed for the pandemic, and later got a five hundred gallon smoker built from a reclaimed propane tank by his welder friend Randy Golden. The reason this sits at number two rather than lower is that the ribs and the brisket hold up against anything in the county, and the operation is one person deciding when it is right.

Go-to order or tip: It is a Friday and Saturday operation. Sources disagree on the closing time, so treat it as a lunch window and get there when it opens.

Stringer's Lufkin Bar-B-Q

Downtown, South Chestnut at Timberland · $$

Known for Hickory in the original brick pits, and the fried rolls

Eugene Gann opened this as LBBQ in 1950 in a twelve by twenty foot building. In 1952 Queen Esther Stringer took a job here after overspending on her children's Christmas presents, and bought the place six weeks later. It has stayed in the family since. Buck and Queenie Stringer sold the business and the land to their son and daughter-in-law Paul and Brenda in 1983, who sold to Paul and Robin Stringer in 2014.

They still fire hickory in the same brick pits Queen Esther used, they smoke their own meat rather than buying it in, and the Texas Historical Commission has recognised the business with a Texas Treasure Business Award. Locally it is called Lufkin BBQ or LBBQ as often as Stringer's, and the two are the same address.

Go-to order or tip: Order the fried rolls. They are the item people who grew up here come back for, and they are not a side you will find at the other six.

Hours
Tuesday through Saturday, roughly 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday.

TnT Smokehouse

Mobile, parks around Lufkin and Hudson · $$

Known for Brisket sandwiches from a truck that parks at a different address most days

Jeremy and Christine Teague opened TnT in December 2021 and it is listed with the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce under food trucks rather than restaurants, which is the honest description. The Lufkin Daily News has written it up twice, once on the barbecue and once on the ingredient sourcing behind it.

The regular stops include the Hijinx lot in Hudson and the Shade Tree, and directories carry at least two different Lufkin street addresses for it because a truck does not really have one. Judged on the brisket sandwich alone it belongs this high. Judged on how hard it is to find on a given Tuesday, it belongs behind the three above.

Go-to order or tip: Check Facebook the morning of, not the night before. The schedule moves.

Hours
A short weekly schedule that changes. The location and the hours are posted on Facebook.

Bodacious Bar-B-Q

West Frank Avenue · $$

Known for The six-day dine-in plate, with a Mexican menu alongside it

Brothers Charles and Archie Chapman run this one, and the Lufkin Daily News put them at 23 years in town. They opened at 521 S Timberland Dr, later added the Frank Avenue building, and closed the Timberland location after about five years. Frank Avenue is the surviving address and the Timberland one is shut, which trips up visitors working from an old listing.

The board runs beef, ham, turkey and chicken, and Chapman has said the addition of Mexican dishes brought in customers the barbecue alone was not reaching. This is the Lufkin answer when it is a Monday, or it is 6 p.m., or you want to sit down inside with a table rather than eat off a trailer window.

Go-to order or tip: Note that the Bodacious name sits on separate, independently owned businesses across East Texas. This one is the Chapman brothers' operation and tells you nothing about the others.

Hours
Monday through Saturday, roughly 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed Sunday.

Papa's Pit & More

Huntington, ten miles east of Lufkin on U.S. 69 · $

Known for Weekday brisket in the next town over

This is the one entry on the list that is not in Lufkin, and we are labeling it rather than quietly counting it as local. Huntington sits ten miles east on U.S. 69, which puts Papa's inside a normal Lufkin lunch run.

Kelvin Jones, who goes by Papa, worked at the Lufkin paper mill until it closed and then spent years in the oilfield, including six and a half in West Texas, before opening this. It is a family operation with his wife Lesia, his son Justin and daughter-in-law Casey, and his daughter Chelsea and son-in-law Garrett working it, and the family had been cooking barbecue for fundraisers for more than 25 years first. The Lufkin Daily News covered it four weeks after it opened under the headline that it was already drawing a crowd.

Go-to order or tip: Go on a weekday. It is closed Saturday and Sunday, which is the opposite of most barbecue schedules and catches people out.

Hours
Weekdays only, from late morning into the evening. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

Willie P's BBQ and Fish

North Raguet Street · $

Known for Barbecue inside a full soul food menu, plus fried fish

The Lufkin Daily News has reviewed this twice and liked it both times. It occupies the old Ruben's Chicken and Fish building on North Raguet, and the menu goes well past barbecue into oxtails, links, boudin, fried chicken, chicken dressing, collard greens, cabbage and banana pudding.

One warning worth more than any review. The business trades as both Willie P's and Willie G's depending on the sign, the listing and the delivery app, and aggregators also carry a Pollok address and a Locke Street address for it. It is placed last here because it is a soul food kitchen that does barbecue rather than a barbecue joint, not because the food ranks last.

Go-to order or tip: Order the barbecue stuffed baked potato. It is the item the newspaper and the public reviews both keep landing on.

Hours
Long daily hours by local report, longer than anything else on this list. Call ahead rather than trusting a directory.

How did we pick these?

We started from three independent records rather than from anybody's ranking. The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce member directory told us which barbecue businesses actually exist as businesses here. The Lufkin Daily News archive told us which ones the local paper has bothered to write about, and it has covered five of these seven. Texas Monthly's barbecue coverage told us which two have drawn attention from outside the county. Anything that appeared in only one of those three, or in none of them, got cut.

There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. new-post.js matched nothing for Lufkin and barbecue, so nothing was pre-filled, and no business here has any relationship with us or paid anything.

Five things came off the list. Bryan's Smokehouse on South Timberland, the Lufkin joint that got a Robert Irvine renovation on television, carries a closed marker and no current trace, so it is gone. S&T Pit Burgers and More on Paul Avenue also shows as closed on current listings. The Bodacious at 521 S Timberland is shut and only the Frank Avenue one survives. Smokey J's BBQ, a truck that opened on Highway 69 South in May 2022, has no signal we could find after that year, and we will not send you to a truck we cannot confirm is still parking. Ember Smoked BBQ on South Medford exists on the delivery apps and nowhere else we could check independently, which is not enough for this list. We also left off Mimsy's Craft Barbecue and CC's Smokehouse, both real and both worth the drive, because one is in Crockett and the other in Nacogdoches.

What should you know before you go?

Lufkin barbecue runs on a short week. Two of the best three are trailers that stop when the meat is gone, three of the seven close on Sunday, and one closes for the entire weekend. If you have a single shot at this, make it a Friday between eleven and one, which is the only window when all of Boxcar, Wade's, Stringer's and Bodacious are serving at the same time.

Joint Days open Serving window Best for
Boxcar BBQ Thu to Sat Late morning to early evening or sold out The best brisket in town
Wade's Barbecue Fri and Sat Lunch, or until it runs out Ribs, and one person doing everything
Stringer's Tue to Sat Roughly 10 to 7 1950 brick pits and the fried rolls
TnT Smokehouse Varies weekly Posted on Facebook A brisket sandwich, if you can find it
Bodacious Mon to Sat Roughly 10 to 8 A Monday, an evening, or a table indoors
Papa's Pit Mon to Fri Late morning into the evening A weekday run out to Huntington
Willie P's Reported daily Long hours, call first Barbecue on a soul food plate

Two address warnings. Boxcar is mid-move from the Jackson Avenue trailer to a permitted build-out at 212 E Burke Ave, so confirm which one is serving before you drive. Wade's appears at 1513 S Chestnut on most current listings but at a South Bynum address on at least one directory, so use the Facebook page as the source of truth. Parking is easy at all seven and none of them takes a reservation.

What about the rest of East Texas barbecue?

Lufkin sits in a thin patch. Angelina County has one nationally noticed pit and a set of solid local ones, where Tyler and Longview each have deeper benches an hour or two north. If you are working through the region, Tyler has a Texas Monthly Top 50 alumnus and Longview has a 1968 original, both covered in the best barbecue in Longview and the best barbecue in Tyler. Crockett, an hour west on Highway 7, has Mimsy's Craft Barbecue, which Texas Monthly reviewed and which is better than the drive suggests. The full set of city guides is in the Texas barbecue category.

What should you do next?

Go to Boxcar on a Thursday or Friday at opening and order brisket. If the pork steak is on that week, order that too, because it runs once a week and it is the thing the magazine singled out. Then, on a different trip, go to Stringer's before the lunch rush and get the fried rolls, because you can eat brisket in a hundred Texas towns and you can eat those in one.

If you are in town for a whole weekend, add Wade's on Saturday morning. Three visits and you have covered the range of barbecue this county actually offers, from a one-man trailer to a pit that has been burning hickory in the same building for 76 years.

For everything else to eat in town, from the dining room in the Hotel Angelina to the tamales at a working tortilleria, start with the best restaurants in Lufkin or the Lufkin city guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Texas Monthly named three East Texas joints to its 2025 Top 50 and none of them is in Angelina County. Boxcar BBQ was profiled by the magazine's barbecue desk and was widely expected to contend, but it did not make the list. Anyone telling you Lufkin has a Top 50 pit is wrong.

No, and this confuses people constantly. They are unrelated businesses that happen to share a name. Longview's Boxcar is a family-run brick-and-mortar on Gilmer Road known for its house-made pies. Lufkin's is Jeremy Staggs's post oak trailer downtown.

Effectively none of the seven. Boxcar, Stringer's and Bodacious are all closed Sunday, Wade's runs Friday and Saturday only, and Papa's Pit closes for the whole weekend. Willie P's is the one with long daily hours reported, and even there it is worth a phone call first.

The trailers do. Boxcar and Wade's both run until the meat is gone rather than until a posted closing time, so a late lunch is a real risk. The sit-down rooms, Stringer's and Bodacious, hold their hours far more reliably.

It is Stringer's signature, a bread roll fried rather than baked, served alongside the barbecue. It has been on the menu for decades and is the single item locals name first when Stringer's comes up. No other joint in this guide serves one.
