How did we pick these?
We started from the two things in Marshall that outside publications have actually gone to see, the Pazzeria wine list and the Bear Creek Smokehouse farm, and worked outward from local reporting rather than from review aggregators. The Marshall News Messenger has covered new kitchens in town steadily, including Taqueria La Mexicana in March 2026 and La Chapina in July 2025, and those pieces did more to shape this list than any star rating did.
There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries here. Nobody in clients.json operates a restaurant in Harrison County, so nothing was pre-filled into this article and nothing was cut for a relationship.
Two well known names came off the list during checking. Neely's Brown Pig, which sold its chopped pork sandwich in Marshall from 1927, closed in 2020 after 93 years, and it still shows up in older roundups. Central Perks, for a decade the top rated place in town, no longer appears to be operating at 211 N Washington, which is the address High Horse 1898 now occupies. If you have seen either recommended recently, that is why.
What should you know before you go?
The schedule matters more than the menu here. Downtown Marshall largely shuts on Sunday and Monday, the smokehouse closes in the afternoon, and two of the best rooms serve dinner only a few nights a week. Work out the day first and the meal second.
| Restaurant | What it does | Price | Closed |
| Pazzeria by Pietro's | Italian, deep wine list | $$$ | Sunday |
| The Ginocchio | Steaks in the 1896 hotel, dinner only | $$$ | Sunday and Monday |
| Bear Creek Smokehouse | Smoked meat counter and store | $ | Sunday |
| Rüeggenbach Brewing | Brewpub, German leaning food | $$ | Monday and Tuesday |
| Cajun Tex | Gumbo and fried seafood, BYOB | $$ | Sunday |
| Taqueria La Mexicana | Michoacan tacos, cash only | $ | Open daily |
| High Horse 1898 | Steaks, lunch daily and dinner Thu to Sat | $$$ | Sunday |
| Bread of Heaven | Soul food, limited hours | $ | Varies, call |
| La Chapina | Pupusas and Guatemalan plates | $ | Sunday |
Parking downtown is free on the street around the courthouse and rarely a problem outside of festival weekends. Bear Creek is the one address that is not walkable from anything, roughly fifteen minutes out of town on Highway 154, so pair it with a drive rather than squeezing it in.
What has opened in Marshall lately?
Rosaria's took over the old Miguel's space at 105 E Houston on the square in 2026, another Filippazzo restaurant, this one built around Mexican cooking and tequila with culinary manager Areli Estrada's family recipes behind the menu. It is too new for us to rank it honestly, but it is worth knowing about when you are standing on the square deciding. The Blue Frog at 208 N Washington is the downtown breakfast and lunch counter, and it turns up in both the Texas Highways weekender on Marshall and the News Messenger's own downtown roundup.
What should you do next?
Pick the day, then book. If you get one dinner in Marshall, make it Pazzeria on a weeknight when you can talk to somebody about the wine, or The Ginocchio if the point of the evening is the building. If you get one lunch, drive out to Bear Creek Smokehouse and come back with meat.
More of the region is covered on the Marshall city guide and in our best restaurants in Texas section. Longview is 25 minutes west on I-20 and has a deeper bench for a second night, which we ranked in the best restaurants in Longview, and Texarkana is the next stop northeast if you are working up US 59, covered in the best restaurants in Texarkana.
