Roadhouse Family Diner

North Main, north of the Loop 286 interchange · $

Known for Hand breaded cube steak from a local meat market, pan fried to order

This is the only kitchen in Paris that tells you where the meat comes from. The diner's own site says its chicken fried steak is cut fresh from a local meat market, hand breaded as all beef cube steak, and pan fried rather than dropped in a basket. That is the whole argument for chicken fried steak in one sentence, and nobody else in town makes it.

The plate comes with cream gravy, Texas toast, salad and fries, and it is the cheapest full chicken fried steak dinner we could confirm anywhere in Lamar County. Roadhouse is a Lamar County Chamber member and carries a listing with Visit Paris Texas, so it checks out in two places besides its own website.

Go-to order or tip: Breakfast runs alongside the lunch menu, so the chicken fried steak is available well before noon. Hours are reported differently across directories, so phone before an evening trip.

Hours
Opens early for breakfast and runs through the afternoon, closing time varies by source, call ahead for evenings

Magel's Grill

Northeast Loop 286 · $$

Known for The chicken fried steak that anchors a full dinner menu, plus the free yeast rolls

Magel's lists chicken fried steak as a signature item alongside the fajitas and the Texas Jack chicken, and it is the dish reviewers name most often, usually in the same breath as the complimentary yeast rolls that arrive with whipped butter. It is the only place on this list that serves a proper chicken fried steak past eight in the evening.

The room seats a crowd and there is real parking off the Loop, which matters if you are bringing more than four people. It appears both in the Lamar County Chamber restaurant directory and on Visit Paris Texas.

Go-to order or tip: Ask for extra rolls when you order, not after. This is the pick when you want a chicken fried steak dinner rather than a chicken fried steak lunch.

Hours
Lunch through evening Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday

South Main Cafe

South Main, south of downtown · $

Known for The chicken fried steak plate lunch, with homemade rolls and cornbread

South Main runs the classic Texas cafe arrangement, a rotating daily special of one meat plus sides, a drink and a dessert for one price, with chicken fried steak in the rotation and available off the regular menu too. The homemade rolls and the cornbread come with the special rather than costing extra, which is increasingly rare.

The room is plain and the service is fast. It occupies the building that traded as Nancy's Cafe, and several booking and delivery platforms still carry the old name in their URLs, so do not be thrown if a search sends you there.

Go-to order or tip: Go for a weekday lunch and take the special. The kitchen closes mid afternoon and does not reopen for dinner.

Hours
Early morning through mid afternoon Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday

Known for A chicken fried steak dinner cooked in a full scratch kitchen

Harlem Nights opened in Paris in 2014 as a soul food bar and grill and now trades as a scratch kitchen, with Tyrone Hayden as owner and Carla Wallace-Hayden running the kitchen. The chicken fried steak is sold as a dinner with sides rather than as a plate lunch, and it is the only one in town that comes out of a kitchen where the greens, the mac and the cornbread are all made in house.

It is a soul food restaurant first, so the chicken fried steak sits on a menu next to fried catfish, southern fried chicken and chicken and waffles. That is why it is fourth here rather than first, not because the steak is worse.

Go-to order or tip: Check the day before you drive. Sources disagree on whether Wednesday is open, and the restaurant is dark three days a week either way.

Hours
Open a short week, closed Monday, Tuesday and Saturday, with the open days running late morning into the evening

Rooster's Country Cooking

Reno, on Lamar Road just west of the Paris city limits · $

Known for Country cooking with breakfast served all day and chicken fried steak on the everyday menu

Rooster's is in Reno rather than Paris, which is a five minute drive west on Lamar Road and close enough that it turns up in every Paris search. We are listing it with its real town stated. It is a Lamar County Chamber member, it has its own website with a published menu, and the chicken fried steak sits on that menu rather than appearing only as a rotating special.

Breakfast runs all day, the sides list includes fried okra and hand battered onion rings, and there is a drive through, which no other kitchen on this list offers.

Go-to order or tip: The building previously traded as Ms. Nita's Diner and several review sites still file it under that name, so search the address if the name returns nothing.

Hours
Early morning through early afternoon Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday

Kountry Kitchen

Blossom, about ten miles east of Paris on US 82 · $

Known for A small town cafe where chicken fried steak is the dish it is known for

Kountry Kitchen is in Blossom, not Paris, and we are saying so plainly. It earns a place because chicken fried steak is the single item the directories consistently list it as known for, ahead of the catfish and the breakfast, which is not true of anywhere else in Lamar County.

It is a genuine small town cafe on Front Street, and the drive east on US 82 takes about fifteen minutes from downtown Paris. Worth it if you are already headed that way.

Go-to order or tip: Hours are reported two different ways across platforms, with one source showing a straight daily window and others showing a longer Friday and Saturday. Call first.

Hours
Closed Monday and Sunday, morning through early afternoon midweek, later on Friday and Saturday

Known for Chicken fried steak on a fried seafood menu, with hushpuppies as a side

Catfish King is a fried seafood house that keeps chicken fried steak on the menu for the person at the table who does not want catfish. It is a real option rather than an afterthought, and the sides that come with it are the seafood house sides, hushpuppies and coleslaw and fries, which is a different plate from the mashed potatoes and gravy everywhere else serves.

It sits a block north of Roadhouse on the same stretch of North Main, so if one has a wait the other is a two minute drive.

Go-to order or tip: Order it with hushpuppies rather than fries. That combination is the reason to choose this one over the diners.

Hours
Closed Monday, otherwise late morning through evening

Sirloin Stockade

Northeast Loop 286 · $

Known for A chicken fried steak entree that comes with unlimited access to the buffet

This is a regional buffet chain, not a Paris original, and it is last for that reason. It earns the final slot on two honest grounds. It is the only kitchen here open seven days a week, and the chicken fried steak is an ordered entree that comes with potato, Texas toast, salad and the bakery, with the buffet available alongside.

If you are feeding teenagers or arriving on a Sunday evening when most of this list is closed, it is the answer. If you want the best chicken fried steak in town, it is not.

Go-to order or tip: Order the chicken fried steak from the menu rather than taking whatever is on the buffet line. They are not the same thing.

Hours
Late morning through evening seven days, opening earlier on weekends

How did we pick these?

We started from every kitchen in and around Paris that actually puts chicken fried steak on a published menu, then cut anything we could not confirm was currently trading. That killed the two names that sit at the top of most searches. Crawford's Hole in the Wall, the answer everyone gives, carries a closed marker and its downtown address at 202 3rd St NW is now That Place Downtown. High Cotton Kitchen on Clarksville Street closed on 18 January after almost five years. Both are still all over the aggregator lists, which is exactly the problem with those lists.

We also cut restaurants that are excellent but do not serve the dish. 107 on Grand Avenue is tacos, burgers and blackened fish. BonFire on Clarksville Street cooks prime steaks with French technique and no chicken fried steak appears on its menu. And we cut Southside Cafe, which comes back high in searches for chicken fried steak in Paris and is in Paris, Tennessee.

There are no partners, sponsors or paid placements on this list. Our scaffolding tool matched no client business to Paris and chicken fried steak, and we checked the one Paris client that cooks comfort food, Corner Cafe on the plaza, against its published menu. It serves sandwiches, burgers and pizza, not chicken fried steak, so it is not here. It appears on our Paris restaurants guide where it belongs.

Two entries are outside the Paris city limits and we have labeled both on their cards. Rooster's is in Reno, five minutes west. Kountry Kitchen is in Blossom, about ten miles east.

What should you know before you go?

Chicken fried steak in Paris is mostly a lunch proposition. Five of the eight kitchens here close by mid afternoon and four are shut on Sunday. If you are arriving late in the day or on a weekend, your options narrow fast.

Where Best for Serves dinner Open Sunday
Roadhouse Family Diner The steak itself Call ahead No
Magel's Grill A sit down dinner Yes No
South Main Cafe The plate lunch No No
Harlem Nights Scratch cooking Yes Usually
Rooster's Country Cooking Breakfast all day No No
Kountry Kitchen A small town drive Friday and Saturday No
Catfish King Hushpuppies instead of fries Yes Yes
Sirloin Stockade Feeding a crowd Yes Yes

Hours are the weak point in the public record here. Roadhouse is listed as closing at three in the afternoon by some directories and eight in the evening by others. Kountry Kitchen shows two different weekly patterns. Harlem Nights is listed as opening Wednesday by one source and Thursday by another. We have described the pattern on each card rather than printing a time we cannot stand behind. Phone first if the trip is more than ten minutes.

Two of these share a stretch of North Main within about a block, Roadhouse at 2315 and Catfish King at 2430, which is a useful fallback if one is packed. Magel's and Sirloin Stockade are both on Northeast Loop 286 with easy parking, so they are the practical choice for a group or anyone who does not want to hunt for a downtown space.

What about the rest of the plate?

The gravy is what separates these. Roadhouse, South Main and Rooster's all run the standard cream gravy on a cafe plate with potatoes and a vegetable. Catfish King is the outlier, sending it out with the seafood house sides, and hushpuppies with chicken fried steak is a better combination than it sounds. Harlem Nights puts it against soul food sides, so greens and mac rather than mashed potatoes.

Free bread is worth factoring in too. Magel's is known locally for the yeast rolls it brings to every table at no charge, and South Main includes a roll or cornbread with the daily special rather than charging for it.

What should you do next?

Go to Roadhouse Family Diner at 2315 N Main St for a weekday lunch and order the chicken fried steak. It is the only version in Paris where the kitchen will tell you the beef came from a local meat market and was breaded by hand that morning, and it is also the cheapest full plate on this list. Call (903) 785-9115 first if you are going in the evening, because the published closing time is not consistent.

If you want the dinner version with a real dining room, go to Magel's Grill on the Loop instead. If it is Sunday, your realistic choices are Catfish King or Sirloin Stockade.

Then work through the rest of the town on our Paris hub, or compare notes with the best burgers in Paris and the best barbecue in Paris. Every other town we have ranked for this dish is on the chicken fried steak category hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chicken fried steak is breaded like fried chicken, fried crisp, and served with a peppery white cream gravy. Country fried steak is usually lightly floured rather than battered and served with brown gravy. Every kitchen on this list serves the chicken fried version with cream gravy.

Sirloin Stockade on Northeast Loop 286 and Catfish King on North Main are the two we could confirm are open Sundays. Harlem Nights is often open Sunday afternoons but keeps a short week, so check before driving. Roadhouse, South Main Cafe, Magel's, Rooster's and Kountry Kitchen are all closed Sunday.

No. Crawford's traded at 202 3rd St NW downtown and its listing now carries a closed marker. That address is currently occupied by That Place Downtown, a different restaurant. Crawford's still appears at the top of a lot of chicken fried steak searches for Paris, which is why we are saying so here.

It closed on 18 January after almost five years, which its own Facebook page announced along with the death of its owner. It was one of the better known comfort food kitchens in Paris and still shows up in search results, so it is worth knowing before you plan a trip around it.

A plate lunch version runs under ten dollars at the cafes and diners. A full dinner with sides at Magel's or Harlem Nights lands in the mid teens. We have not published individual menu prices because they move, so treat those as bands rather than quotes.
