How did we pick these?
Terrell is a harder town to research than its size suggests, and the reason is simple: only one of the eight restaurants above publishes a website. Everything else had to be built from documents rather than from the businesses themselves.
Two official sources carried the work. The Terrell Chamber of Commerce runs a live business directory that gives a street address and a phone number for every member, 28 under restaurants and 50 under the wider food and beverages heading, and we read it directly rather than through a search result. The city's convention and visitors bureau runs Discover Terrell, which carries 84 entries on its dining list, sorted into cuisine categories. A restaurant that appears on both is a restaurant that exists and is trading. That test, plus a street address we could confirm, is what every entry above passes.
We also used current public review platforms, but only to rank, never to establish that a place is open. Where the chamber, the tourism office and the delivery apps disagreed on hours, which was most of the time, we described the pattern instead of printing a time. Ranking Rosa's first is a judgment about reliability as much as food: it is the one place here you can look up, confirm and drive to without a phone call.
The cuts were substantial. Hot Rodz Diner is on the tourism office list but its Yelp page is flagged closed and two sources give two different addresses, so we left it out. Country House Cafe rates highest of anything in Terrell on Tripadvisor and Yelp, and we still cut it, because three sources give three different addresses, 351 FM 148, 1314 West Moore and 101 State Highway 205, and we will not publish a street address we cannot pin down. Gorditas Durango showed as closed on the listing we found. Oscar's Barbecue & Catering at 431 Roosevelt Avenue is a chamber member we could not corroborate anywhere else. Texas Steak & Grill appears on the tourism list and is marked permanently closed on another guide, which we could not resolve either way. Ham Orchards is real, excellent and closed until May 8, 2027.
The chains went out as a matter of course: Soulman's, Texas Roadhouse, Bubba's 33, Twin Peaks, Whataburger, Chick-fil-A, Raising Cane's, Taco Cabana, McAlister's, Jersey Mike's, Olive Garden and Chili's are all here and none of them tells you anything about Terrell. No business on this list is a client of ours, nothing in our client file matched Terrell and restaurants, so this is a straight editorial list.
What should you know before you go?
Terrell splits into two food towns. South of the railroad, the I-20 and Spur 557 interchanges carry the outlet mall, Film Alley and every national chain, plus Rosa's. North of it, Moore Avenue runs east to west through the historic district and carries nearly every independent. If you want to eat somewhere that only exists in Terrell, you want Moore Avenue.
The second thing to know is that this is an early town. Several kitchens here close by 8pm and the posted times are optimistic.
| Restaurant | Where | Cuisine | Website | Hours confidence |
| Rosa's Mexican Cocina | I-20 service road | Mexican | Yes | High, 11am to 9pm daily |
| Los Hermanos | 1500 W Moore | Tex-Mex | No | Low, call first |
| Lula Mae Bistro | 115 E Moore | Bistro, breakfast | No | Low, call first |
| Hickory Roots BBQ | 705 E Moore | Barbecue | No | Low, roughly 10.30am to 8pm |
| Rio Lerma | 300 W Moore | Mexican | No | Medium, opens mid morning |
| La Autentica Taqueria | 300 E Moore | Tacos | No | Low, check social |
| Tortilleria Terrell | 1744 N Frances | Tortilleria | No | Medium, daytime only |
| Pop's Honey Fried Chicken | 701 E Moore | Fried chicken | No | Medium, 11am to about 8pm |
Downtown parking is free and on street, and the walkable cluster is tighter than the table suggests: Lula Mae, Whisked Away Bake House and Terrell Coffee Co. are inside one block of each other on Moore Avenue, with Books & Crannies and The Lyric Performance Center on the same stretch. Terrell is 32 miles east of downtown Dallas on either I-20 or US 80, which is the road in the photograph at the top of this page and the older, slower, more interesting of the two.
What about Forney and Kaufman?
Worth knowing, because Terrell sits in the middle of a line of Kaufman County towns on US 80 that are each growing fast. Forney is 12 miles west and now has the better downtown eating block of the two, with a brewery, a Bishop Arts pizzeria and a Cajun catfish house inside four streets. Kaufman is 15 miles southwest. Canton and First Monday Trade Days are 30 miles east. If you are working your way along US 80, Terrell is the stop for Tex-Mex and Forney is the stop for everything else.
What should you do next?
If you have one meal in Terrell and want certainty, go to Rosa's Mexican Cocina at 307 East Interstate 20. It is open 11am to 9pm, it publishes that fact, and you will not drive to a locked door. If you have a morning and want the actual town, park on Moore Avenue, start with coffee at Terrell Coffee Co., eat breakfast at Lula Mae Bistro, and walk to Books & Crannies afterwards.
Then head 12 miles west. Our guide to the best restaurants in Forney covers the next town along US 80 and has the stronger downtown block, and the best restaurants in Rockwall covers the lake town 20 miles north. Everything we have written about this city collects on the Terrell guides hub, and the restaurants section has every town we have ranked.
