How did we pick these?
We started from the two local roundups that name names, the KETK coffee crawl route and KLTV's Weekend Grind list, then checked every shop against its own website. Nine of the ten entries above have an official site, and the addresses, phone numbers and hours here come from those sites rather than from a directory.
That cut the list down. Two shops that turn up in Tyler coffee searches did not make it. 1948 Coffee & Juice Co. at 110 N College is listed in older roundups, but a later report has Crema taking that same Plaza Tower suite, and we could not confirm 1948 is still trading, so we left it out rather than send you to a closed door. The White Rabbit Coffee House shows up in Tyler searches but the one address we could find for it is in Denison, so it is somebody else's list.
We also kept the chains out. Dutch Bros, 7 Brew, Scooter's and Gregorys Coffee at Broadway Square are all real and all fine, and none of them is why you would read a Tyler coffee guide. Porch Culture is the one entry that is not a cafe, and it is ranked last and labelled as a roastery for that reason. No business on this list has any relationship with us.
What should you know before you go?
Tyler coffee runs early and stops early. Six of these shops are shut by 6 p.m. and four are closed all day Sunday, so the useful question is not which is best but which is open when you need it.
| Shop | Opens | Closes | Sunday | Drive-thru |
| The Foundry | 7 a.m. | 9 or 10 p.m. | 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. | No |
| Likewise, both shops | 6 a.m. | 6 p.m. | Closed | Yes |
| Crema | 6 a.m. weekdays | 6 p.m. | 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Yes |
| Brady's | 7 a.m. | 4 p.m. | Closed | No |
| Jumpshot | 7 a.m. | 4 p.m. | Closed | No |
| Enoch's | 7 a.m. | 9 p.m. | Closed | No |
| Mudslingers | 6 a.m. weekdays | 4 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. | Yes, only |
Downtown parking is free on the street around the square and the two South Broadway addresses are next door to each other, so The Foundry and the Porch Culture roastery are one stop, not two. The south-side shops, Crema, Big Shot and the Old Jacksonville Likewise, are spread along a four-mile stretch and need a car.
One more practical note. Big Shot's hours are the one set we could not pin down from a primary source, so call ahead if you are driving out to FM 2493 late in the day.
What about the roasters rather than the shops?
If you want beans instead of a drink, the answer is not a grocery aisle. Porch Culture sells its own micro-roasted coffee, date-stamped, from the downtown roastery by appointment. Likewise sells its Mosaic Blend, Main Street Blend, cold brew blend and rotating single origins from Guatemala and Honduras at both Tyler counters and ships them. Coffee City USA roasts on Highway 31 west of town and sells retail and wholesale.
That is a genuinely good position for a city this size. Two independent roasters supplying the local shops is more than Longview or Texarkana can claim, and it is why the coffee at The Foundry and Crema tastes like somebody chose it.
What should you do next?
Park downtown on a weekday morning, start at The Foundry on South Broadway, and walk six blocks west to Brady's to see the oldest and the newest versions of a Tyler coffeehouse back to back. That is the whole argument of this list in about an hour.
If you are on the south side, Crema is the drive-thru worth the detour and Likewise on Old Jacksonville is the one to pick when you want to sit. For the rest of the city's food, our guide to breakfast in Tyler covers the morning plates that go with the coffee, the Tyler city hub collects everything we have published here, and the best coffee shops in Texas hub compares Tyler with the rest of the state, including Paris, where a four-shop downtown punches above its size.
