How did we pick these?
We worked from the Winnsboro Area Chamber of Commerce's own Restaurants and Spirits directory, which lists nine members, and widened it with current public review records and a Texas Monthly feature on the town. Seven entries survived.
Two of the seven publish their own hours on their own websites, and those two are first and third. The rest we confirmed through the chamber directory for the address and phone, and through public review volume for what people actually order. Where only an aggregator had a schedule, we have said so and told you to call instead.
The cuts are the part worth reading. Texas Monthly's Winnsboro piece covered three barbecue joints in a town of about 3,500 people. Three years later, East TX Rust BBQ's phone number now appears against a Gilmer address on a newer listing with different hours, and Coyote Smoke BBQ's Winnsboro location is flagged closed on a business profile, a review platform and a delivery app at once. We could not confirm either is still serving in Winnsboro, so neither is here, and a barbecue list for this town is not something we can write today. ciboVino, the Italian restaurant Texas Co-op Power recommended in 2011, has disappeared from every current source, so it is out too. Pyke's Crossroads on North Main and Wagon Junction on East Broadway are real addresses we could not learn enough about to rank. 5C Beer and Wine Garden is a chamber member but we could not establish that it serves food.
No restaurant on this list is a client of ours and none paid anything to appear. All seven are editorial picks.
What should you know before you go?
The governing fact is that Winnsboro's best kitchens close Sunday and Monday. The Barrel House, which is the best restaurant in town by a clear margin, is shut both days. Z's Main Street is closed Monday and Tuesday. If you are planning a trip around a meal here, plan it for Wednesday through Saturday.
| Restaurant | Price | Best for | Own published hours |
| The Barrel House | $$ | Dinner, a bar and a patio | Yes |
| Haven's Cafe | $ | Breakfast and shrimp and grits | No |
| Z's Main Street | $ | Sunday lunch downtown | Yes |
| Peralta's | $ | Mexican, sit down | No |
| Crawnanny's | $$ | A crawfish boil to take away | No |
| Taco Dive | $ | Tacos mid afternoon | No |
| Promised Bakery | $ | Bread and pastry, early | No |
Geography is easy here, because almost everything is on two streets. North Main carries Haven's Cafe and Z's. East Broadway carries The Barrel House, Taco Dive and Promised Bakery. South Main has Peralta's and the chains. Crawnanny's is the outlier, east of town on Highway 11.
One honest warning about this list. Five of the seven entries have no schedule they publish themselves, and in a town this size that is normal rather than suspicious. It does mean the hours you see on a maps app may have been scraped once and never corrected. Every phone number on this page came from the chamber directory or the business itself, and a call beats a listing every time.
What else is there to do in Winnsboro?
More than the population suggests. Winnsboro has been a Texas Main Street City since 2003 and the restored downtown holds the Winnsboro Center for the Arts, the Bowery stage, a mural walk and a farmers market. Our guide to the best things to do in Winnsboro covers all of it, and the Winnsboro city hub collects everything we have published on the town.
What should you do next?
Pick a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening and book nothing, because The Barrel House does not need a reservation and nothing else in town takes one. Eat there. If you are staying the night, go to Haven's Cafe in the morning for the shrimp and grits, which is the most surprising thing on any menu in Wood County.
If you land on a Sunday, go to Z's Main Street before 4pm and walk the Main Street district after. For the same kind of list in the next towns over, see the best restaurants in Mineola 20 miles south or browse our restaurants category for the rest of East Texas.
